Google’s Material 3 Expressive refresh is a design update—not a new phone or watch. Announced on May 13, 2025, it brings more motion, stronger visual emphasis and personalized color to Android, while shaping Wear OS controls and animations for circular watch screens. Google tied the changes to Android 16 and Wear OS 6 and said Pixel devices would try them first later that year; those historical plans do not establish which devices are eligible today.
What Material 3 Expressive changes
Material 3 Expressive extends the personalized approach of Material You. Google describes the design direction as more fluid and glanceable: color, typography, responsive components and animation work together to make interfaces feel more distinctive and interactions easier to read at a glance.
Google’s Mindy Brooks, VP of Product Management and User Experiences for Android Platform, described the goal this way: “Personalization is core to Android, and Material 3 Expressive — one of our biggest updates in years — is all about making your device feel unique to you.”
What looks different on Android
Google said Android 16 lays the foundation for the phone-side redesign. The announced changes affect familiar system surfaces such as notifications and Quick Settings, rather than turning Material 3 Expressive into a separate app or operating system.

- More responsive motion: Spring-like animations are intended to make everyday interactions feel less rigid. Google’s example shows notifications reacting to a dismissal gesture.
- Updated color and typography: Refined dynamic color themes and more emphasized typography give system interfaces stronger visual character.
- Customizable Quick Settings: Users can tailor the controls in this frequently used system panel.
- Refined notifications: The announcement highlighted notification prioritization and a subtly blurred background for the notification shade.
- Live Updates: Progress information, such as a food delivery, can remain visible in a notification. Google’s Android 16 feature information said Live Updates were starting with compatible rideshare and food-delivery apps.
Android 16 also includes platform features such as hearing-device controls, security changes and tablet windowing. Those are separate Android capabilities, not all parts of the Material 3 Expressive visual refresh.
How Wear OS adapts the design to round watches
On a watch, the redesign has to work within a small circular canvas. Google’s Wear OS treatment uses the shape of that display as part of the interface rather than treating it like a rectangular phone screen clipped into a circle.

- Shapes can transform: Components may morph during transitions instead of switching abruptly between fixed shapes.
- Color connects the system: Google described watch-face colors flowing through the watch interface, including system surfaces and apps or tiles.
- Tiles emphasize quick actions: Tiles can surface glanceable information or shortcuts, such as messaging a contact or starting a workout.
Google’s developer guidance names tools and patterns such as TransformingLazyColumn for edge-following scroll motion, a ScrollIndicator, a three-slot tile layout, dynamic color, variable fonts, and spring or shape-morphing animations. These are design and development options, not a promise that every watch app will use every treatment.

What Google’s battery claim means
Google reported up to 10% more battery life for watches moving from Wear OS 5 to Wear OS 6. The figure is a Google-reported maximum, not a guaranteed improvement or an independent test result; Google’s developer article says actual battery performance varies.

What the rollout announcements do—and do not—confirm
Google’s May 2025 announcement described changes planned for Android 16 and Wear OS 6 and said Pixel devices would try the updates first later that year. That records the rollout plan at the time; it is not a current, complete list of phones or watches that have received the redesign.
The cited announcements and developer materials do not establish device-by-device eligibility as of October 4, 2026. Before assuming a particular phone or watch has the update, check current availability information from Google and the device maker. The announcements do not support a claim that you need to buy a new device to get the redesign.
