Apple released watchOS 10.4 on March 7, 2024. The headline “six new features” mainly refers to six newly supported emoji, while the more consequential changes were a false-touch fix, expanded notification behavior, a Vision Pro-related Double Tap option, an Apple Pay security change for AssistiveTouch users, and a contact-sync fix. It is an archived release rather than the latest watchOS target in 2026; Apple’s watchOS 10 update history lists later releases, including watchOS 10.6.2.
What “six new features” actually means
watchOS 10.4 added support for six emoji characters. They are useful for replies from the watch, but they are not six separate major capabilities.

Whether an emoji appears can also depend on the paired iPhone’s software and the messaging app or input method being used.
The practical changes beyond emoji
False-touch display issue
Apple says watchOS 10.4 resolves an issue that could cause false touches on the display. Contemporary reports associated “ghost touches” particularly with Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. That does not establish that every phantom-touch complaint had the same software cause. If erratic input continues after updating, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider rather than assuming the watch needs replacement.

Double tap can expand a full notification
With the Tap to Show Full Notification setting enabled, a double tap can expand a notification. This is a notification-display behavior, separate from the broader Double Tap controls available on supported newer hardware.
Option to disable Double Tap during Vision Pro use
watchOS 10.4 added a setting to turn off the Apple Watch Double Tap gesture while using Apple Vision Pro. It is intended to reduce accidental activations when the watch is being used alongside the headset. The option matters chiefly to Series 9 and Ultra 2 owners and other Apple Watch models that support Double Tap; it is not a universal capability on every watch.

Conditional Apple Pay and AssistiveTouch security change
When Apple Pay is configured with Confirm with AssistiveTouch, watchOS 10.4 requires a passcode for additional security and does not support double-clicking the side button in that configuration. This changes the payment flow for that accessibility setup; it does not mean every Apple Pay transaction on Apple Watch suddenly requires a passcode.
Contact syncing fix
Apple also fixed an issue that prevented contacts from syncing to Apple Watch for some users. This is a reliability fix, not a new Contacts feature.

Who had the strongest reason to install it?
- Series 9 and Ultra 2 owners with phantom taps: The false-touch correction was the most important reason to update.
- Vision Pro users: The ability to disable Double Tap can prevent unwanted gesture activations.
- Messaging-heavy users: The six emoji and notification expansion are the most visible day-to-day additions.
- AssistiveTouch users who pay with Apple Watch: Review the new passcode requirement before relying on the updated payment flow.
Users looking for a new watch face, a major health feature, a battery-life improvement or a broad interface redesign would not find that kind of overhaul in 10.4.

- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Choose watchOS 10.4 when it is offered, then start the download and installation.
- Keep the Apple Watch on its charger throughout the installation.
Contemporary launch coverage reported that the paired iPhone needed iOS 17 or later, the watch needed at least 50% battery, and the watch had to be connected to its charger. Those were requirements reported for this 2024 release; later watchOS versions can have different prerequisites.

- Verify that the iPhone and Apple Watch are still paired.
- Check that the iPhone meets the required iOS version for the release.
- Connect the watch to its charger and charge it above the stated threshold.
- Keep the two devices close together and use a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Restart both devices if the update remains unavailable.
- If the status stays on “preparing,” allow more time before interrupting it.
- Do not remove the watch from its charger during installation.
The original release coverage documents the iPhone Watch-app method. A direct on-watch route may exist in current software under Settings → General → Software Update, but menu labels and eligibility can change between watchOS releases.

Compatibility and important limits
The available release material establishes that 10.4 belongs to the watchOS 10 generation but does not provide a complete supported-model list. Check Apple’s archived compatibility documentation for a specific watch rather than assuming every watchOS 10 device has identical features.
- Double Tap and its Vision Pro setting apply only to hardware that supports Double Tap.
- The Apple Pay change applies only when Confirm with AssistiveTouch is being used.
- Emoji rendering and entry can depend on the paired iPhone and the app.
- Persistent false touches are not proof of a universal software fault; service may be necessary.
Is watchOS 10.4 still the right update to install?
For a device still running an older watchOS 10 build in the historical 2024 context, 10.4 was a sensible update, especially when false touches, contact syncing or Vision Pro gesture conflicts were present. In 2026, however, it should not be treated as the endpoint for an Apple Watch. Use Apple’s current software-update path and install the newest version supported by your particular watch and paired iPhone.
