Apple Watch Gets FDA Clearance for Sleep Apnea Notifications—Not Diagnosis

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Apple did not receive FDA approval for the Apple Watch to diagnose sleep apnea. On September 13, 2024, the FDA cleared Apple’s Sleep Apnea Notification Feature through the 510(k) pathway. On supported watches, it analyzes wrist-movement patterns over time and can notify eligible adults about signs suggestive of possible moderate-to-severe sleep apnea. It is a risk-screening notification, not a sleep study, diagnosis, treatment monitor, or replacement for medical care.

The clearance applies to the feature, described by the FDA as an over-the-counter Class II device for assessing sleep-apnea risk—not to the entire Apple Watch as a diagnostic device. See the FDA 510(k) record and FDA clearance letter.

What the FDA actually cleared

The FDA’s decision was a 510(k) clearance, dated September 13, 2024, for Apple’s Sleep Apnea Notification Feature (submission K240929). “Clearance” is the precise regulatory term; it is not the same as saying the Apple Watch was FDA-approved to diagnose sleep apnea.

FDA records classify the software as an over-the-counter device intended to assess the risk of sleep apnea. The intended use is to identify patterns suggestive of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and notify the user. FDA documentation says it is not intended to provide a standalone diagnosis, replace polysomnography, assist clinicians in diagnosing sleep disorders, or function as an apnea monitor. Details are in the FDA’s clearance letter and Total Product Life Cycle record.

In plain English: Apple Watch can raise a reason to seek evaluation; it cannot establish that you have—or do not have—sleep apnea.

How Apple Watch looks for possible sleep apnea

Movement is the signal

During sleep, the watch’s accelerometer detects small wrist movements associated with changes in normal breathing patterns. Apple converts those observations into a metric called Breathing Disturbances. The feature is inferring a respiratory pattern from movement; it is not directly measuring airflow, respiratory effort, brain activity, or every oxygen change recorded during a polysomnogram. Apple describes this sensor approach in its watchOS 11 announcement and Series 10 explanation.

Nightly classifications and the 30-day window

Each usable night receives an “Elevated” or “Not Elevated” Breathing Disturbances classification. The feature evaluates sequential 30-day periods and needs at least 10 nights of usable data within a period before it can issue a possible-sleep-apnea notification. It therefore is not an instant, first-night test.

Apple says Breathing Disturbances can be affected by alcohol, medication, sleeping position, and other changes that affect sleep quality or movement. The Health app can display trends over one month, six months, or one year, while a notification can include a report containing three months of data.

Compatible Apple Watch models and prerequisites

Apple’s current support documentation lists the following compatibility. Availability can vary by country, language, hardware, and software, so check the current Apple Support page before buying an imported watch or relying on the feature.

Requirement What Apple currently states
Watch Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2, or Apple Watch SE 3
Software Latest compatible watchOS and iOS versions
Phone An iPhone paired with the watch and running the latest compatible iOS
Age At least 18 years old
Existing diagnosis Feature is intended for people who have not already been diagnosed with sleep apnea
Overnight data Sleep tracking enabled, with at least 10 usable nights in a 30-day period
Use Wear the watch while sleeping, consistently and securely
Region and language Subject to Apple’s regional and language availability

Apple’s original September 2024 launch materials named Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2. The later support page adds SE 3 and says “Series 9 or later,” so the support page is the better current reference.

How to turn on Sleep Apnea Notifications

Menu names can vary slightly by software version. Apple’s current iPhone path is:

  1. Open the Health app.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Tap Respiratory.
  4. Under Sleep Apnea Notifications, tap Set Up.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. Confirm your date of birth and answer whether you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
  7. Complete the on-screen setup.

Apple’s instructions for use also describe Health → Browse → Sleep → Sleep Apnea Notifications → Set Up Notifications on some versions. If the feature is missing, update both devices, confirm the model and region are supported, enable sleep tracking, and wear the watch overnight. See Apple’s setup guide and instructions for use.

What a notification means

A “Possible Sleep Apnea” notification means the watch found a repeated pattern of breathing disturbances that may be consistent with sleep apnea. It does not confirm the condition.

The alert can show the period in which the pattern occurred, provide educational material, and offer a report with three months of Breathing Disturbances data. Apple says you can export that report as a PDF and discuss it with a healthcare professional. Those capabilities are described in the watchOS announcement and Apple Support.

Arrange medical follow-up rather than self-treating. A clinician may recommend a physician-ordered home sleep apnea test or an overnight laboratory polysomnogram, depending on symptoms and medical history. A watch alert does not itself authorize CPAP, prove insurance eligibility, or determine which treatment is appropriate.

What a normal result—and no notification—cannot tell you

“Not Elevated” is not a clean bill of health. Apple explicitly says not everyone with sleep apnea will receive a notification. The feature is designed to identify possible risk, not certify that breathing is normal.

Do not use it to monitor CPAP, an oral appliance, surgery, positional therapy, or another treatment. People already diagnosed with sleep apnea are outside the feature’s intended use, and treatment decisions require clinical data.

Who should seek care regardless of the watch

Discuss persistent symptoms with a healthcare professional even if the watch never alerts you. Concerning signs include:

  • Loud or habitual snoring
  • Witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, or choking during sleep
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Morning headaches
  • Resistant or poorly controlled high blood pressure
  • Other repeated nighttime breathing concerns

Urgent breathing or cardiovascular symptoms warrant prompt medical attention rather than waiting for wearable data.

Common problems and what to check

No Breathing Disturbances data

  • The watch was not worn overnight or was worn inconsistently.
  • Sleep tracking is disabled.
  • The fit was too loose for reliable movement data.
  • There is not enough usable data yet.
  • watchOS or iOS is out of date.
  • The watch, iPhone, language, or region is unsupported.

No alert after several nights

That is expected: the algorithm requires at least 10 nights within a 30-day window. Even after enough data, some people with sleep apnea will not be notified.

Already diagnosed or seeking treatment monitoring

Do not use this feature to judge whether CPAP or another therapy is working. Apple and FDA materials describe it as a risk-notification function for adults without an existing diagnosis.

How useful is it?

The strongest use case is awareness and triage. A person who snores, feels unusually sleepy, or has never pursued testing may be prompted to start a medical conversation. The multi-night report can give a clinician additional context.

Its limits are equally important: it needs repeated overnight wear, can be influenced by factors that change movement, may miss cases, and does not collect the full physiologic signals of a clinical sleep study. No sensitivity, specificity, false-positive rate, or predictive value should be inferred from the FDA clearance alone.

Should you buy an Apple Watch for this feature?

Buy one for the broader Apple Watch experience—health, safety, fitness, and smartwatch functions—if you already use an iPhone and want those capabilities. Sleep-apnea notifications can be a useful additional feature on a supported model.

Do not buy an Apple Watch as a substitute for diagnostic testing. Android users cannot use Apple Watch as their normal smartwatch ecosystem, and people already diagnosed with sleep apnea should not expect this feature to monitor treatment. Apple’s buying starting point is the Apple Watch store; verify current model support before checkout.

For an Android ecosystem, Samsung offers Galaxy Watch products with sleep-apnea functionality in some markets, but exact model, phone, software, and regional compatibility must be checked on Samsung’s official Galaxy Watch page. A physician-ordered home test or laboratory polysomnogram remains the direct route when the goal is diagnosis.

Bottom line

Apple Watch has an FDA-cleared feature that can notify eligible adults about patterns suggestive of possible sleep apnea after at least 10 nights of data in a 30-day period. It does not diagnose sleep apnea, rule it out, monitor treatment, replace a sleep study, or prescribe CPAP. Treat an alert as a reason to seek professional evaluation—and treat a lack of alert as inconclusive.
