Yes—the FDA cleared Apple’s Hypertension Notification Feature (HTNF) on September 11, 2025. The clearance covers software that looks for patterns associated with possible hypertension in Apple Watch sensor data. It does not turn an Apple Watch into a blood-pressure monitor: the watch does not produce systolic or diastolic readings, diagnose hypertension, or replace a validated cuff and medical evaluation.
What the FDA actually cleared
The FDA database lists Apple Inc.’s Hypertension Notification Feature under 510(k) submission K250507, cleared September 11, 2025. The cleared product is a software medical device with a defined notification and screening use—not authorization for the Apple Watch to measure blood pressure directly.
“FDA cleared” is the accurate term. “FDA approved Apple Watch to measure blood pressure” is not. The official record and decision summary are available from the FDA 510(k) database and the FDA decision document.
How hypertension notifications work
The watch’s optical heart sensor uses photoplethysmography (PPG): light is shone into the skin and the sensor detects heartbeat-related changes in blood volume. Apple’s machine-learning model analyzes qualifying PPG patterns for signals associated with hypertension.

- The watch collects qualifying optical-sensor data during normal wear.
- An on-watch model scores patterns associated with possible hypertension.
- Those scores are aggregated on the paired iPhone.
- The system evaluates patterns over a longer period rather than taking a single reading.
- If the pattern meets the feature’s criteria, the user receives a hypertension notification.
Apple describes the operating window as 30 days. An alert therefore refers to a pattern detected over that period, not blood pressure at the moment the notification appears. No cuff calibration is required before the feature screens for a pattern, and no blood-pressure number is displayed. Apple’s technical explanation is in its validation paper; user-facing guidance is on its support page.
Which Apple Watch models support it?
| Model family | Hypertension Notifications | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 9 and later | Supported | Requires compatible watchOS and paired iPhone software. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later | Supported | Requires compatible watchOS and paired iPhone software. |
| Apple Watch SE (including SE 3) | Not supported | Apple’s validation materials exclude the SE line. |
Apple introduced the feature with the Series 11 and watchOS 26, but it is not exclusive to that generation. Availability can vary by country and software version, so check Apple’s current documentation before purchase. Apple’s supported-device details are in the validation paper.
Who the cleared feature is for—and who should not rely on it
The FDA-cleared indication is for over-the-counter use by adults 22 and older who have not previously been diagnosed with hypertension.

- It is not intended for people younger than 22.
- It is not intended during pregnancy.
- It is not indicated for people already diagnosed with hypertension.
- It is not a treatment-response or ongoing blood-pressure-surveillance tool.
These are intended-use limits, not a guarantee that the software can never show a notification outside that population. They mean the feature has not been cleared or validated for those uses. The FDA’s full indications and exclusions appear in the decision document.

What an alert means
A notification means the feature found a pattern consistent with possible hypertension. It is a prompt to obtain conventional measurements and speak with a healthcare professional—not a diagnosis and not a reading such as “150/95.”
Apple’s instructions say to use an appropriate traditional cuff, measure twice daily for seven days, record the results in the Health app or another dependable log, and share them with a clinician. Follow the detailed U.S. instructions for use and Apple’s support guidance.

Do not change treatment on the basis of the alert
- Do not start, stop, or change medication solely because of a watch notification.
- Do not assume a watch alert tells you how urgent a particular blood-pressure value is.
- Use a validated upper-arm cuff rather than a wearable or accessory that makes unverified blood-pressure claims.
The FDA warns against unauthorized blood-pressure devices because inaccurate readings can delay appropriate care or prompt harmful decisions: FDA safety communication.
What no notification means
No alert does not establish normal blood pressure. The feature can miss cases, and it may not produce a result when it has insufficient qualifying data. Gaps in wear, a loose fit, poor sensor contact, or full watch storage can reduce the data available for screening. The FDA documentation expressly cautions that absence of a notification does not indicate absence of hypertension.
Because the algorithm looks for longer-term patterns, it is also not designed to evaluate an acute event. Anyone with emergency warning signs such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden neurological changes should seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for a wearable notification.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Apple says the model was developed with data from more than 100,000 participants and validated in a clinical study involving more than 2,000 participants. Those figures are Apple-reported development and validation totals, not a guarantee of performance for every population; the study design, case definition, and performance measures matter.
The Apple validation paper is the principal first-party evidence. Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values measured in a study population do not translate directly into an individual’s probability without knowing that person’s underlying prevalence and clinical context. Imperfect sensitivity means a negative result cannot rule out hypertension; false positives mean an alert still requires cuff confirmation.
An independent JAMA Network Open analysis described the feature as a potential population-screening opportunity while noting that large-scale use could also create hypertension misclassification. That is the appropriate framing: earlier awareness may be useful, but clinical diagnosis remains a separate step.

Should you buy an Apple Watch for this feature?
If you already own a compatible watch
Enabling the feature may add a useful passive screening prompt if you are 22 or older, have no hypertension diagnosis, and are willing to follow up with a cuff. There is no reason to replace a working Series 9-or-later or Ultra 2-or-later watch solely to obtain the notification feature.
If you are choosing a new watch
Apple’s current shopping pages list the Series 11 from $399 for a U.S. aluminum configuration and the Ultra 3 from approximately $799; prices and configurations can change. The official buying page is the place to verify current pricing. The Ultra’s rugged design, battery life, and outdoor features—not the hypertension function alone—are what could justify its higher price.
The Apple Watch SE line is not a route to Hypertension Notifications, despite the SE 3 appearing at a lower starting price on Apple’s watch store.
If your goal is actual blood-pressure numbers
Buy or use a properly validated upper-arm cuff. The watch does not eliminate that need, and no Apple Watch model covered by this clearance provides cuff-equivalent systolic and diastolic readings.

Practical limitations to check
- Wear time: extended gaps or poor fit can leave insufficient data.
- Storage: Apple’s U.S. instructions warn that new data cannot be collected when Apple Watch storage is full.
- Software and region: compatible watchOS, iPhone software, and local regulatory availability are required.
- Clinical context: pregnancy, an existing diagnosis, symptoms, or treatment decisions fall outside the feature’s cleared screening role.
The bottom line
Apple’s Hypertension Notification Feature has genuine FDA 510(k) clearance, but it is a pattern-based screening notification—not a blood-pressure monitor or diagnostic test. Treat an alert as a reason to take seven days of cuff readings and contact a healthcare professional; treat no alert as inconclusive.
