Yes—compared with the Series 7–9 design, the Apple Watch Series 10’s inactive black border can look slightly thicker. That does not mean the screen is smaller. Series 10 uses larger 42mm and 46mm cases, has more active pixels, and offers up to 9% more active display area than Series 7, 8, and 9. The apparent contradiction comes from separating the usable display from the black border, curved glass, and outer case.
What “bezel” means on Apple Watch
Apple Watch comparisons often use bezel for several different parts of the front. They should be separated:
- Active display: the pixels that illuminate and show watchOS.
- Inactive black border: the unlit area between those pixels and the edge of the display assembly.
- Outer case or frame: the aluminum or titanium structure surrounding the front glass.
A watch can therefore have a larger active display, a more visible black border, and a less prominent metal frame at the same time. In this article, “thicker bezel” means the visible inactive black border—not the entire case edge.
Is the Series 10 bezel thicker than the Series 9?
Visually, it appears so. Macworld and Engadget both observed that the Series 10’s black border looks slightly larger or more noticeable than the Series 9’s in close comparisons. 9to5Mac likewise describes the change while noting Series 10 is thinner overall.

Apple has not published a consumer specification giving the bezel’s width in millimeters. The safest description is therefore “appears slightly thicker” or “more noticeable,” rather than an exact numerical increase. The difference is easiest to see in a straight-on comparison with a light watch face or content that reaches the perimeter. At ordinary wrist distance, it is subtle, and watchOS faces with black backgrounds can blend the border into the display.

How can the border look thicker while the display gets bigger?
The generations are not the same physical size. Apple moved from the 41mm and 45mm classes used by Series 7–9 to 42mm and 46mm for Series 10. The active display dimensions also increased:

Apple says Series 10 provides up to 9% more active screen area than Series 7, 8, and 9. That gain comes from the larger case and display format; it does not require every non-active portion of the front to become thinner. Pixel dimensions describe resolution, not a millimeter measurement of the luminous area, so subtracting them from case dimensions cannot produce a reliable bezel width.

Make the fair comparison: 42mm versus 41mm, 46mm versus 45mm
A valid visual test pairs the closest size classes:
- Compare a 42mm Series 10 with a 41mm Series 9.
- Compare a 46mm Series 10 with a 45mm Series 9.
Putting a 46mm Series 10 beside a 41mm Series 9 and calling the result a bezel comparison mixes different case dimensions, aspect ratios, and display sizes. Apple’s developer documentation groups Series 7, 8, and 9 together at 41mm/45mm and Series 10 at 42mm/46mm: supporting multiple Apple Watch sizes.
What changed in Series 10’s front design?
Series 10 is a 9.7mm-thick redesign with a wider display aspect ratio, more rounded corners, and front glass that curves farther toward the case edges. Apple also reduced weight in the construction. These changes alter where the eye perceives the boundary between active pixels, black glass, and metal.
From an angle, the curved glass can seem to extend farther than the illuminated display. In a photograph, reflections and the chosen watch face can make the inactive area look either larger or nearly invisible. A flat, front-facing image therefore cannot fully represent the relationship between the display and case.

What you notice in everyday use
Light watch faces reveal the border
White or brightly colored faces provide the strongest contrast between active pixels and the black perimeter. Complications positioned near the edge can make that boundary easier to notice.
Black faces hide much of it
When the face background is black, the inactive border visually merges with the surrounding display area. Series 10 can consequently look much closer to edge-to-edge than a light face suggests.
The larger active area still matters
The added display room gives text, controls, and complications more space, and larger touch targets can be easier to hit. The black border does not cancel that usable-area increase.

Viewing angle changes the impression
At an angle, the curved front glass and Series 10’s wide-angle OLED design affect what appears to be screen versus border. Check thinness and comfort separately from front-face appearance; the difference in overall case thickness is also most apparent side by side.
Is Series 10’s bezel thicker than every older Apple Watch?
No. The qualified comparison is with the recent Series 7–9 front design. Against Series 9—and generally Series 7 and 8—the black border is commonly described as slightly more noticeable. That does not establish that Series 10 has a thicker border than every earlier generation. Compared with Series 4–6 or older models, Series 10 still has a substantially larger active display and a more modern rounded presentation.

The nominal case-size change is primarily a display and case-geometry issue. Apple’s comparison materials position Series 10 as compatible with existing Apple Watch bands, so a more noticeable black border should not be treated as a band-compatibility problem. How to compare two watches in a store
- Match the closest sizes: 42mm against 41mm, or 46mm against 45mm.
- Open the same watch face on both watches.
- Use a light background and edge-reaching complications to expose the inactive border.
- Judge the active pixels, black border, and metal frame as three separate areas.
- View both watches straight on, then at an angle, where curved glass changes the impression.
- Check case thinness and comfort under a sleeve independently; a thinner case does not guarantee a thinner-looking black edge.
Who should care about the difference?
Series 9 owners
If the thinnest-looking black border is your priority, Series 9 may look preferable from the front. Series 10 is a less dramatic visual upgrade in that one respect, even though its body is thinner and its active display is larger.
Owners of Series 7 or 8
The larger active area and thinner case are more meaningful upgrades, and the border difference is unlikely to outweigh the additional usable screen unless front-face aesthetics are your overriding concern.
Buyers expecting a bezel-free look
Set expectations carefully. Series 10 prioritizes display area, thinness, curved glass, and off-angle readability—not a visibly thinner inactive black border than Series 9.
How reliable are numerical bezel claims?
Apple provides dimensional drawings for Series 10 and Series 9, but its consumer specifications do not state a simple bezel-width figure. The drawings are available at Series 10 42mm and Series 9 41mm. Because the front is rounded and curved, a rectangular case-minus-display calculation would be misleading. The evidence supports the direction of the visual difference, not an official millimeter amount.
Verdict
The headline is directionally correct: compared with Series 7–9, Series 10’s inactive black border can look slightly thicker. But Series 10 still has the larger active display—up to 9% more area—and a thinner 9.7mm case. The redesign makes the border more noticeable in some views while delivering more usable screen overall. If you dislike bezels, inspect a matched-size pair in person; if you want more display, thinner hardware, and better angled readability, the border does not make Series 10 a smaller-screen watch.
