Apple initially withheld Live Translation with AirPods from users in the European Union at the September 2025 launch, then announced an EU expansion for December 2025. As of August 16, 2026, Apple documents the feature as available in the EU for compatible devices, supported languages and eligible accounts—subject to important hardware, software and regional conditions.
What changed since the September 2025 launch?
Apple introduced Live Translation with AirPods alongside AirPods Pro 3 and iOS 26. Its launch documentation said the feature was unavailable when both conditions applied: the user was physically in the EU and the Apple Account country or region was set to an EU country. That was a restriction on the feature’s availability, not a statement that the underlying AirPods hardware could never support it.
The launch was not limited to AirPods Pro 3. Apple also positioned AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation as compatible models.

Why was the rollout delayed?
Apple said it needed additional engineering work related to compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), according to its November 4, 2025 announcement. Apple did not publish a detailed technical explanation identifying particular APIs, interoperability obligations or implementation changes.
It is therefore inaccurate to say that the EU simply “banned” AirPods translation. Associated Press reporting provided broader context about Apple’s view that EU rules could require some AirPods capabilities to be made available to competing wireless earbuds, but that is context rather than a detailed regulator finding about this feature (AP report).
Who can use Live Translation with AirPods now?
Apple’s current support instructions require every item in this checklist:

Apple’s current requirements are listed in Use Live Translation with your AirPods. Standard AirPods 4 without ANC, AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro (first generation) should not be treated as supported unless Apple updates that list.

Which languages work through AirPods?
Apple’s current AirPods-specific availability list includes:
- Chinese Mandarin (Simplified)
- Chinese Mandarin (Traditional)
- English (UK)
- English (US)
- French (France)
- German (Germany)
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish (Spain)
See Apple’s feature-availability page for the current list. EU availability does not mean every EU language is supported: Dutch, Polish, Greek, Czech, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Romanian, Hungarian, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian and Bulgarian, among others, are not listed for AirPods Live Translation. Apple’s general Apple Intelligence, Translate, Phone and FaceTime language lists are different and should not be substituted for the AirPods list.

How to start a translation
- Connect supported AirPods to the iPhone.
- Open Settings, select the connected AirPods, then open Translation > Languages.
- Download the language models for the conversation.
- Open Apple’s Translate app and tap Live.
- Select the language the other person is speaking and the language for your translation.
- Tap Start Translation.
Apple also documents launch options including the Translate app’s Live tab, an iPhone Action button configured for Translate, pressing and holding both AirPods stems on supported models, and the command “Siri, start Live Translation.” Live Translation can also be used in one-to-one Phone and FaceTime calls, with the exact behavior and language support determined by Apple’s current software.
Does the other person need AirPods?
No. The other person can speak normally while you hear the translation through your AirPods. Your iPhone can display a translated transcript or play your translated response through its speaker. A second set of AirPods may make a conversation more hands-free, but it is not required for a basic exchange.

Apple says downloaded language models enable processing on the iPhone and that conversation data remains private. That should not be generalized into a guarantee that every call, language download or Apple Intelligence function is completely offline.

Apple also warns that Live Translation uses generative models and that results may be inaccurate, unexpected or offensive. Accents, background noise, overlapping speech, idioms, latency and poor microphone positioning can all affect a conversation. It is not a substitute for a professional interpreter in medical, legal, emergency or other high-stakes situations.

EU location is not the same as “Europe”
The original rule referred specifically to the European Union and an EU Apple Account region. The United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are not EU member states and can have separate availability or regulatory treatment. Name the country rather than assuming that every European market follows one rule.
Do not change your Apple Account region as a workaround
The launch restriction used both physical location and account region, so changing only one setting was not necessarily sufficient. Now that Apple has announced the EU rollout, changing regions is an unnecessary and risky recommendation: it can affect subscriptions, payment methods, account balances, purchases and app availability. Check Apple’s current availability page instead.

China mainland is a separate limitation
Apple’s AirPods guide says Live Translation is unavailable in China mainland. That is a separate regional rule, not evidence that the former EU delay remains in force (AirPods user guide).
Troubleshooting when the feature is missing
- Confirm that the iPhone is an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.
- Update to iOS 26 or later and enable Apple Intelligence.
- Verify that the AirPods are AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2.
- Install Translate and update the AirPods firmware.
- Download both required language models under Settings > [connected AirPods] > Translation > Languages.
- Check that the chosen pair appears on Apple’s AirPods-specific language list.
- Check for a separate country, account or China mainland limitation.
- Remember that Apple’s setup requires selecting the speaking and target languages; do not assume unrestricted automatic language detection.
Should you buy new AirPods for translation?
Do not buy AirPods solely for this feature until the entire setup is compatible. AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC are already on Apple’s list, so AirPods Pro 3 is not mandatory. Conversely, compatible AirPods will not enable Live Translation on an iPhone older than the iPhone 15 Pro.
For occasional travel, Apple Translate on an existing iPhone avoids a new purchase, although it is less hands-free. Google Translate is a cross-platform option for Android users or people who need a different language ecosystem. Dedicated translator hardware can suit frequent travelers, but language coverage, connectivity, subscriptions, privacy and pricing vary and require separate checking.
Bottom line for EU users
Apple’s original EU exclusion was real at launch, but the claim that Live Translation with AirPods “won’t come” to EU-based users is outdated. Apple announced the EU expansion in November 2025 and now documents the feature for eligible EU users. Before buying anything, verify the iPhone model, AirPods model, iOS version, Apple Intelligence status, firmware, language pair and country-specific availability on Apple’s live support pages.
