Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup, Apple Watch Series 10, and AirPods 4 went on sale on Friday, September 20, 2024, with first customers welcomed at Apple Stores in several major cities. The launch also included a black titanium Apple Watch Ultra 2 and new colors for AirPods Max. September 20 was the main launch date, not a universal one: Apple scheduled some additional markets for September 27.
What Apple released on September 20
The September 20 launch brought several product families to customers, but not every item represented a new generation. Apple’s launch report documented first-customer activity at stores around the world; it does not establish that every store had every configuration in stock.
- iPhone: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
- Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in a new black titanium finish. The black Ultra 2 was a finish update, not a new Ultra generation.
- Headphones: AirPods 4 in two configurations—standard and with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)—plus AirPods Max in new colors with USB-C charging.
Apple’s launch account includes images from Apple Fifth Avenue in New York, Apple Regent Street in London, Apple BKC in Mumbai, Apple Jing’an in Shanghai, and Apple Myeongdong in Seoul. These are examples of the global retail launch, not evidence that queues, events, or inventory were the same at every location. Apple’s September 20 launch report describes the store celebrations.
Launch timeline and regional availability
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 9, 2024 | Apple announced the iPhone 16 family, Apple Watch Series 10, and AirPods 4. |
| September 13, 2024 | iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro preorders began at 5 a.m. PDT. |
| September 16, 2024 | iOS 18 and watchOS 11 became available. |
| September 20, 2024 | Main retail launch and first customer deliveries in principal launch markets. |
| September 27, 2024 | Further launch date for Macao, Vietnam, and 19 other countries and regions. |
Apple’s wording and launch coverage emphasize retail availability and first customers, so “went on sale” or “arrived with first customers” is more precise than suggesting that all preorder shipments went out in one coordinated dispatch. See Apple’s iPhone 16 announcement and launch overview for the dates and rollout details.

What changed in the iPhone 16 range
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
The standard iPhone 16 models use Apple’s A18 chip and add Camera Control alongside the Action button. Their camera system pairs a 48-megapixel Fusion camera with a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera that supports autofocus and macro photography. They can also capture spatial photos and video. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display; the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch display.
Both standard models were offered in black, white, pink, teal, and ultramarine, with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage options. Apple positioned them for Apple Intelligence, but software availability was staged rather than complete on launch day. The announcement’s full specifications and U.S. launch pricing are in Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus release.
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max
The Pro models use the A18 Pro chip and have larger displays than their predecessors, with Camera Control shared across the lineup. They differ from the standard phones in camera capabilities, materials, display sizes, and price; the shared control does not make their camera systems equivalent. Apple also promoted improved battery life, a manufacturer claim rather than an independently measured result in the launch materials. Apple’s lineup overview summarizes the Pro positioning.

Apple Watch Series 10: thinner case, larger display, and health features
For a watch-focused buyer, Series 10’s headline changes were its slimmer case and larger display. Apple said it was nearly 10 percent thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9, and described the display as the largest and most advanced in Apple Watch history. The case sizes changed to 42mm and 46mm. Aluminum models included a polished jet-black finish; titanium models came in natural, gold, and slate. Apple said older 41mm and 45mm bands would fit the new case sizes, so an upgrade would not automatically require replacing an existing band.

Series 10 also added water-depth and water-temperature sensing, faster charging, and sleep-apnea notifications, and launched with watchOS 11. Apple stated an 18-hour battery life. That figure is Apple’s stated specification, not a comparative test result. Apple’s Series 10 announcement gives the design, compatibility, and feature details.
Sleep-apnea notifications were not simply an active feature for every buyer on launch morning: Apple said the feature was pending FDA clearance at announcement and expected later in September 2024. Regulatory status and regional availability mattered. For watchOS 11, Apple specified an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 as the required iPhone pairing device.

AirPods 4 came in two distinct versions
AirPods 4
The standard AirPods 4 introduced a redesigned open-ear fit and updated acoustic architecture, including a low-distortion driver and high-dynamic-range amplifier. Apple also listed Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and up to 24 hours of listening with the charging case.
AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
The higher configuration added ANC and Transparency mode, with additional listening features enabled by its hardware. This is a separate AirPods 4 configuration, not a software switch on the standard model. Apple announced U.S. launch prices of $129 for AirPods 4 and $179 for AirPods 4 with ANC in September 2024.

Do not confuse either AirPods 4 model with AirPods Pro 2. The hearing-test, hearing-aid, and hearing-protection features discussed in Apple’s release applied to AirPods Pro 2, not AirPods 4. The AirPods announcement distinguishes the models and features.

What was available immediately—and what came later
The devices themselves reached stores and customers on the launch date, but some advertised capabilities depended on later software or regulatory steps.
- Apple Intelligence: Apple described the iPhone 16 models as designed for Apple Intelligence, but the first feature set was planned for beta in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1—not as a complete launch-day package. Planned features included Writing Tools, notification and Mail summaries, an updated Siri, and Photos cleanup, with Genmoji and Image Playground among later generative features. Initial language availability centered on U.S. English; features also depended on software, region, language, and supported hardware. Apple listed iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max as compatible too, so the iPhone 16 was not the only supported iPhone generation.
- Sleep-apnea notifications: Apple said clearance was pending at announcement time, with availability expected later in September 2024 and subject to regulatory and regional conditions.
- AirPods Pro 2 hearing features: The hearing-health announcement was for Pro 2, not the AirPods 4 models launching alongside it.

Apple also promoted trade-in credit and carrier offers during the launch. Those launch-period offers are not guaranteed current discounts. Check Apple’s Trade In page or carrier-offer page for terms applicable when buying.
Who had a reason to upgrade?
- Consider iPhone 16 if Camera Control, the Action button, the camera changes, or Apple Intelligence compatibility is useful to you. The standard model is the more straightforward choice when Pro camera features or materials are not a priority.
- Consider iPhone 16 Pro if the Pro camera system, larger display options, or Pro materials matter; Camera Control alone is not a reason to assume the standard and Pro models are otherwise alike.
- Consider Apple Watch Series 10 if a thinner profile, larger screen, faster charging, or its new sensing features address a real need. A recent Watch owner who does not need those changes may have less reason to replace a working watch.
- Choose between AirPods 4 versions by fit and listening needs: the ANC model is for buyers who want noise cancellation while retaining an open-ear design. If an in-ear seal, stronger isolation, or the Pro 2 hearing-health features matter more, AirPods Pro 2 is the more relevant comparison.
For any purchase today, check current pricing, stock, promotions, software requirements, and regional feature availability separately; the figures and launch offers above describe September 2024, not the current market.
