Are Oakley and Meta Making the Best Smart Glasses Ever? Only for the Right User

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Oakley Meta Vanguard is arguably the strongest display-free smart-glasses choice for runners, cyclists and other outdoor athletes. Oakley Meta HSTN is the more conventional lifestyle option, while Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is likely better value for many everyday wearers. None has an in-lens display, and none is a universal “best ever.”

What Oakley Meta glasses actually are

Oakley Meta glasses combine a camera, open-ear speakers, microphones and Meta’s voice assistant in ordinary-looking eyewear. You can take photos and first-person video, listen to music, answer calls, send messages and ask questions without taking out your phone.

They are not augmented-reality glasses. There is no screen, heads-up display, text, map or graphic projected into the lenses. Responses are spoken through the speakers, while settings, sharing and much of the processing depend on the Meta AI smartphone app, a Meta account and an internet connection.

Oakley lists HSTN with two open-ear speakers, a five-microphone array, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, a 12MP-class camera and 32GB of storage. Compatibility is listed as iOS 14.4 or later and Android 10 or later: Oakley HSTN specifications.

Camera 12MP-class; up to 3K video Centered 12MP camera; up to 3K video

Fitness integrations No equivalent Vanguard-focused Garmin and Strava positioning Garmin and Strava integration
Best match Travel, commuting, casual wear and lighter outdoor use Running, cycling, hiking, training and other active use

Meta introduced HSTN on June 20, 2025, with claims of up to eight hours of typical use, 50% charging in 20 minutes and a case providing up to 48 hours of charging: Meta’s HSTN announcement. Vanguard was announced on September 17, 2025, at a $499 U.S. launch price, with an October 21 launch date and sports integrations: Meta’s Vanguard announcement.

HSTN: the lifestyle Oakley

HSTN uses Oakley’s familiar HSTN shape and offers PRIZM and other lens choices. It records up to 3K video and is a better fit for commuting, travel and casual outdoor wear than for demanding training. Oakley’s FAQ describes Oakley Meta glasses generally as IPX4 water resistant, suitable for light rain but not submersion: Oakley Meta FAQ.

Vanguard: the performance flagship

Vanguard has a more secure sport-oriented design, a centered ultra-wide 12MP camera, 3K video, Garmin and Strava integration, and the higher claimed endurance figure. Oakley lists up to nine hours of daily use, six hours of continuous audio, roughly 36 hours from the case and a 75-minute full charge: Oakley Vanguard product page.

The centered camera may produce a more natural first-person viewpoint, but resolution alone does not prove better footage. Stabilization, wind noise, field of view, low-light processing and recording limits still determine whether clips are useful.

What you can do with them

Hands-free photos and video

Use the physical capture button or a voice command to record. Clips are stored on the glasses before transfer to the phone and can then be shared through the Meta AI app and supported services. This is convenient for spontaneous point-of-view moments, but it is not a substitute for an action camera when you need careful framing, long recordings, predictable stabilization or professional image control.

Open-ear audio and calls

The speakers play music and podcasts, deliver Meta AI responses and handle calls while leaving your ears open to surrounding sound. That is useful on a run or bike ride, but wind and traffic can reduce intelligibility. Open-ear playback also leaks sound, and bass and maximum volume will not match sealed earbuds or full-size headphones.

Meta AI

You can ask questions, request media controls, make calls, send messages and, where supported, ask about visible text, objects or surroundings. Feature availability depends on country, language, account status, app version and software rollout. AI recognition should be treated as assistance, not guaranteed human-level interpretation.

Fitness use

Vanguard’s Garmin and Strava integrations are its clearest advantage for athletes. Audio-based workout information and hands-free capture can reduce how often you reach for a phone. The glasses do not replace a smartwatch, cycling computer, heart-rate monitor or dedicated sports camera. Meta describes the integrations and audio-focused athletic features here: Vanguard sports features.

The limits behind the “best ever” claim

Battery figures are not all-day guarantees

“Up to” numbers are manufacturer claims, not independent endurance tests. Typical mixed use is different from continuous recording, frequent AI requests, calls, livestreaming or nonstop audio. Weak connectivity and cold weather can also reduce runtime. Vanguard’s six-hour continuous-audio figure is more specific than its nine-hour daily-use claim; HSTN’s eight-hour figure likewise should not be read as eight hours of recording.

No display means no glanceable information

Spoken directions and answers can be useful, but you cannot glance at a map, transcript, notification or visual prompt. If your priority is AR navigation or an in-lens display, these are the wrong products.

  • GET REAL-TIME ANSWERS FROM META AI — Meta AI empowers athletes with hands-free access to answers, live translation, and more. Get the latest wind conditions while on the golf course or surf reports before you hit the waves.

Phone and cloud dependence

Setup and many functions require a compatible smartphone, Bluetooth, wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. They are not standalone computers or fully offline assistants.

Wind, leakage and social friction

Exposed microphones face obvious wind challenges during cycling and running. Nearby people may hear audio at higher volumes. A camera indicator light signals recording, but it may not be noticed in a crowded or dark environment. Ask permission before recording people and follow the rules of gyms, schools, workplaces, medical settings, concerts and private property. A light is not a substitute for consent or local law.

Water resistance needs model-specific care

Oakley’s Vanguard product listing says IP67, while Oakley’s general FAQ uses IPX4 language for Oakley Meta glasses. Those statements should not be silently merged. Consult the exact model’s safety documentation, including the Vanguard safety and warranty guide.

  • Do not swim with the glasses or intentionally submerge them.
  • Dry the frames and charging contacts before charging.
  • Keep dust and moisture away from the case and connector.
  • Do not assume the charging case has the same rating as the glasses.

Who should buy which model?

Choose Vanguard if

  • You run, cycle, hike, golf or train outdoors.
  • You want a more secure sport frame and Garmin or Strava audio workflows.
  • The centered camera and higher claimed daily endurance matter more than discreet styling.
  • You accept a starting price around $499 and should verify the exact water-resistance documentation.

Choose HSTN if

  • You want Oakley styling for travel, commuting and casual outdoor use.
  • You want 3K capture without Vanguard’s visibly technical sports design.
  • You do not need Vanguard’s fitness integrations.

Choose Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 if

  • You want glasses that look more like conventional everyday eyewear.
  • You prefer Ray-Ban frame designs or a lower listed entry price.
  • You want similar Meta AI and 3K camera functions without a sports-first design.

Buy nothing yet if

  • You specifically require an in-lens display or AR overlays.
  • You need several days of use without a charging case.
  • You need professional-grade video or fully offline operation.
  • You are uncomfortable wearing a camera around other people.
  • You expect waterproof hardware rather than model-specific water resistance.

Setup and ownership checklist

  1. Charge the glasses and case.
  2. Install the Meta AI app and sign in to or create a Meta account.
  3. Enable Bluetooth, wireless internet and the permissions required for calls, media, camera, notifications and location-based features.
  4. Pair the glasses in the app and install available firmware updates.
  5. Configure voice activation, privacy, camera, notifications and sharing settings.
  6. Test a photo, video, call, audio playback and AI request before leaving home.

Oakley says Vanguard requires a compatible Android 10-or-newer or iOS 14.4-or-newer phone, wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. Its product page says a USB-C cable is not included, so plan on having a suitable cable and charging plug.

Privacy controls are found in the Meta AI app under Settings → Select your glasses → Glasses & privacy → Your glasses → About your glasses, according to Oakley’s FAQ. Labels can change with app updates, so use the current on-screen wording.

Prescription, fit and maintenance questions

Prescription availability depends on the exact frame, lens type, prescription range and country. Check the model-specific Oakley listing rather than assuming every PRIZM, polarized or Transitions option is available for every prescription.

  • Confirm bridge and frame size before ordering.
  • Consider temple thickness and nose comfort during long sessions.
  • Check that the camera points naturally with your face and normal posture.
  • Ask about replacement, repair and prescription-lens workflows before purchase.
  • Remember that damaging camera-equipped prescription eyewear can cost more and take longer to replace than ordinary sunglasses.

Verdict

Oakley and Meta may have made the best display-free performance AI glasses yet. Vanguard is the most convincing answer for active athletes, HSTN is the better lifestyle Oakley, and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 remains a compelling everyday and value alternative. The products still involve the fundamental compromises of camera eyewear: phone dependence, changing AI availability, finite battery life, wind and audio limitations, privacy concerns and no visual display.
