Which affordable full skeleton is the best starting point?
Bulova Sutton Skeleton 98A304
At Bulova’s listed €399, the Sutton combines an exposed mechanical movement with a 21-jewel count, 40-hour reserve and transparent screw caseback. Its 10-bar water-resistance rating is the strongest among the two Bulovas and the Seiko listed here. The trade-off is a 43 mm case and mineral crystal rather than sapphire, so check the fit and take care to avoid scratches.

Bulova Surveyor Automatic Skeleton 96A293
The Surveyor is the smaller Bulova at 41 mm and 12.17 mm thick. Bulova lists a 21-jewel mechanical movement, 40-hour reserve and transparent caseback for €449. Its 3-bar rating is lower than the Sutton’s, so it is the less suitable choice if water exposure is a priority.
CIGA Design Z-Series
Lucky Harvey’s 2026 guide puts the Z-Series at approximately $500 and among its stronger sub-$500 skeleton options. The cited comparison does not provide further specifications here, so confirm the exact variant, dimensions, crystal, water rating and warranty with the seller before choosing it over a model with published details.

Is an open-heart watch or display caseback a better value?
A full skeleton removes dial material across the movement and often cuts away portions of the bridges. An open-heart watch instead has one window, typically over the balance wheel. A display caseback leaves the dial largely conventional and shows the movement from behind. These approaches offer different levels of mechanical visibility and have different effects on legibility.
Seiko SNKN37: conventional dial, visible movement from behind
The Seiko SNKN37 is an adjacent alternative rather than a full skeleton: its 7S26 automatic caliber can be viewed through the caseback, while the front retains a conventional dial. Tissot Gentleman Open Heart: a higher-priced window

At approximately $800 in the cited comparison sources, the Orient Star pairs a skeleton display with sapphire crystal, 100 m water resistance, a screw-down crown and a 50-hour reserve. Its 43.2 mm case is closer in diameter to the larger Bulova and Seiko options than to the 40 mm Tissot and Hamilton. A two-year warranty is listed by the comparison source.

Decide how much of the movement you want to see
Pick a full skeleton for a broad view of the movement, an open heart for a smaller front-side window, or a display caseback if a clear, conventional dial matters more. With less dial background, hand contrast becomes especially important: inspect photographs from different angles and look for hands that remain distinct from the mechanism behind them.

Check crystal and case size
Sapphire resists scratches better than mineral crystal, a practical advantage when you are looking closely at the dial. The Sutton and Surveyor use mineral crystal; the Orient Star, Tissot and Hamilton examples use sapphire. For fit, the listed diameters range from 40 mm for the Tissot and Hamilton to 43.5 mm for the Seiko. Case diameter alone does not determine comfort, so consider lug-to-lug length as well when that figure is available.
Match water resistance to how you will wear it
The models listed range from the Surveyor’s 3 bar to 100 m on the Orient Star and Tissot. Do not infer that a watch is appropriate for swimming from appearance or a rating alone: check the maker’s guidance and the crown design for the specific model. A screw-down crown is specifically listed for the Orient Star.
Consider how often you wear it
The Sutton, Surveyor and Seiko offer roughly 40 hours of reserve; the Orient Star lists 50 hours, while the Tissot and Hamilton list 80 hours. A longer reserve gives more time off the wrist before a watch stops, but it does not make a stopped watch unnecessary to reset.
Are skeleton watches harder to service?
The comparison source says skeleton and open-heart watches generally use ordinary production mechanical calibers, so servicing is not inherently harder solely because the dial exposes the movement. Refinishing may take longer. Service needs and costs still depend on the specific movement, its condition and the watchmaker.
