The Citizen Promaster 1000M BN7020-17E, Rolex Deepsea and Seiko’s Professional Diver’s 1000m models are notable examples of watches built or rated for extreme underwater pressure. They are not interchangeable: the Citizen listing specifies 1,000 m, Rolex rates the Deepsea to 3,900 m, and Seiko’s much greater reported test depths involve watches attached to remotely operated vehicles or submersibles—not human dives or revised model ratings.
A 1,000 m marking is a technical specification, not a recommended dive depth or a substitute for dive training and equipment. The right choice depends as much on case size, materials and wearing comfort as on the number on the dial.
What does a 1,000 m dive-watch rating mean?
It is the manufacturer’s stated water-resistance specification for a particular model. It does not mean a person should dive to that depth wearing the watch, nor does it turn a timepiece into a dive computer. These watches may provide an elapsed-time bezel and legible indications, but they do not replace a diver’s training, instruments or procedures.
ISO 6425:2018 covers requirements and test methods for diver’s watches. Its scope describes watches designed for at least 100 m and fitted with a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness; it also includes an annex for saturation-diving watches. ISO identifies the 2018 edition as current, reviewed and confirmed in 2024. The standard’s overview does not establish that any particular model complies, so model-specific claims should be attributed to the manufacturer. ISO 6425:2018

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How saturation-diving features differ
In a pressurized saturation-diving environment, helium can enter a watch. During decompression, pressure inside the watch may become a concern. Rolex says its helium escape valve releases excess internal pressure during decompression in a hyperbaric chamber. Citizen lists a helium release valve on its BN7020-17E, while Seiko has described a historical 1,000 m model designed around helium impermeability.
These are different design approaches to a specialized use case, not universal requirements for every recreational diver. A helium valve is not a general-purpose mark of quality, and its presence alone does not establish a watch’s overall suitability or performance.

What Seiko’s deeper test accounts show—and what they do not
Seiko reports that Professional Diver’s 1000m watches attached to the KAIKO 7000 II remotely operated vehicle functioned at depths down to 3,000 m in 2014. In a separate account, the brand describes a later mechanical version attached to the SHINKAI 6500 for 16 hours and 40 minutes over three days, reaching a maximum depth of 1,398 m. These are manufacturer-reported instrumented tests. They do not change the watches’ marked 1,000 m rating or show that a diver wore one to either depth.
Rolex also recounts a 2012 James Cameron dive to 10,908 m (35,787 ft), accompanied by the Deepsea Challenge. That is a submersible-related historical account, not the Deepsea’s water-resistance rating or a depth reached by a person wearing the Deepsea.

How to choose among extreme-depth watches
Start with the actual use case
For most buyers, the depth figure is less practical than the watch’s fit, readability and timing controls. Consider whether the watch is intended for scuba or saturation diving, and whether its bezel and dial are easy for you to read and operate. Do not assume an extreme rating supplies dive-computer functions.
Check dimensions and materials
The Citizen’s 53 mm width and listed 181.44 g weight make it a substantial watch. Its Super Titanium case and polyurethane strap describe the construction, but neither removes the need to consider how that size and weight feel on your wrist. The cited Rolex and Seiko pages emphasize architecture or history rather than providing the same complete set of comparable dimensions, so a precise size-and-weight ranking is not established here.

Compare features without treating them as a score
- Movement and power: Citizen specifies a J210 Eco-Drive caliber and power-reserve indicator. The cited Rolex and Seiko material does not provide directly comparable movement and power details for the specific examples above.
- Pressure management: Citizen lists a helium release valve; Rolex describes a helium escape valve; Seiko’s historical design account emphasizes helium impermeability. These are distinct stated approaches.
- Timing and legibility: Citizen lists a one-way elapsed-time bezel with lock. Rolex lists a graduated Cerachrom bezel. The cited material does not establish a complete, like-for-like comparison of lume or low-light legibility across all three.

Seiko’s customer guidance cautions that water resistance is not permanently guaranteed: aging gaskets or shock can affect it. For a used, damaged or long-unserviced watch, the original rating should not be treated as proof of its present condition. Follow the manufacturer’s service guidance and have water resistance checked when appropriate. Seiko water-resistance guidance

Historical Sea-Dweller context
Rolex says the Sea-Dweller was created in 1967 for prolonged underwater missions, with a 610 m rating at launch and 1,220 m from 1978 onward. The brand links its helium escape valve to saturation-diving decompression. Those historical ratings provide context for the development of deep-diving watches; they do not mean every current Sea-Dweller is rated to 1,000 m or more. Rolex Sea-Dweller history
