There is no objective winner among these textured dials: the most compelling choice depends on whether you want rippling color, an enamel gradient, stamped geometry or brushed lines. Dave Sergeant’s September 13, 2021 Fratello feature is best read as a historical, subjective shortlist—not a current ranking or buying guide—and it also considers Straum and NOMOS. Its examples show how pattern, color and viewing angle can give watches distinct identities. Guilloché was explicitly outside that feature’s scope.
How the five 2021 examples differ
The descriptions below reflect Dave Sergeant’s 2021 feature, not a controlled side-by-side test. The techniques and inspirations are presented as the sources describe them; they do not establish that one dial is objectively better.

What makes the Grand Seiko textures distinctive?
The SBGJ249’s ripples are one example of Grand Seiko using a dial pattern as a visual reference to place and season. The GS9 Club’s account connects Shōsho to the moment after Japan’s rainy season when warm winds ripple lakes and ponds. That description gives the blue surface a particular scene to suggest without claiming it literally reproduces water.
Grand Seiko’s other cited dials use different motifs rather than one house texture. The GS9 Club relates the SBGJ201 pattern to contours of Mt. Iwate; the SBGH279’s vertical striations to light and shadow; the SBGH269 to autumn foliage and lacquered wooden floors; the SLGH005 to white birch; the SLGH007 to tree growth rings; and the STGK007 to a linen-inspired crosshatch.

A Seiko Design Center feature published October 22, 2022 adds useful context on how these designs are made and perceived. Designer Kiyotaka Sakai says the SLGA007 lake-inspired pattern was based on Lake Suwa imagery, while noting that viewers may associate a dial with different scenes. On the SLGH005, irregularly engraved angles reflect light unevenly to create a three-dimensional impression; the feature describes an impression of a birch grove, not a literal reproduction of bark. Sakai’s observation applies broadly to the appeal of dial texture: “I am sure that you will be able to feel and enjoy your own personal story from a Grand Seiko dial, which presents various expressions depending on the light and angle.”
Which texture might suit your taste?
- For a fluid, nature-linked pattern: the SBGJ249’s horizontal ripples are the clearest fit among the five, with an explicitly stated seasonal reference.
- For a color gradient and material interplay: anOrdain’s fumé enamel combines a colored surface with the silver base beneath it.
- For depth and changing shadow: Czapek’s stamped flinqué trapezoids emphasize three-dimensional geometry.
- For a painted, lacquered surface: Straum’s Opphav offers stamped texture beneath layered finishes.
- For a restrained linear finish: NOMOS’s brushed silvercut dial uses horizontal lines rather than a pictorial motif.
These are taste-based distinctions, not measurable performance differences. Texture can read differently as the dial’s color and illumination change, so a description or photograph cannot settle how a particular watch will look in every viewing condition.

What is still current, and what is historical?
The 2021 feature establishes what Sergeant discussed then; it does not establish current stock or retailer inventory for the Grand Seiko, Straum, Czapek or NOMOS examples. For anOrdain, the Collections page accessed October 4, 2026 lists Model 1 enamel and fumé, Model 1 porcelain, Model 2, Model 2 porcelain, and Model 3 with a textured Method enamel dial. It distinguishes some watches as handmade to order and others as available now, and includes an archive of prior releases. That catalog does not confirm that the specific Model 2 fumé colors described in 2021 remain purchasable.
Accordingly, treat these as design references rather than a live shortlist of watches to buy. Confirm a model’s current listing and variant directly with its brand before making a purchase decision.
