Brilliant Labs Frame Smart Glasses Promised “AI Superpowers”—What They Actually Do

Frame promised visual AI through lightweight smart glasses, but the 2024 device is a phone-dependent monocular display platform—not a standalone computer or immersive AR headset.

Brilliant Labs announced Frame in February 2024 as lightweight smart glasses with a camera, microphone, Bluetooth, and a single-eye color display. The company’s “AI superpowers” pitch covered visual questions, translation, web search and object identification. In practical terms, Frame is not a self-contained AI computer or immersive augmented-reality headset: it is a sensor-and-display peripheral that normally relies on a smartphone and cloud services.

What Brilliant Labs announced

Frame followed Brilliant Labs’ clip-on Monocle with a more conventional glasses form factor. The launch proposition was ordinary-looking eyewear that could capture what the wearer sees, send a request through a phone, and return a short answer or graphic to a transparent heads-up display.

Launch coverage described a $349 preorder price, with shipping expected around April 2024. That figure was not a universal, lens-inclusive final price: another contemporaneous listing reported $418.80 with plain lenses and $536.60 with prescription lenses. Taxes, shipping, accessories and regional availability could also change the total. (ABP launch report; Hackster launch report)

As of August 18, 2026, Brilliant Labs’ public consumer emphasis is on Halo, listed at $349 with Noa+ advertised at $19.99 per month and shipping described as beginning in Q1 2026. Frame should therefore be treated as a 2024 announcement and platform, not automatically as the company’s newest glasses. (Brilliant Labs Halo)

What the “AI superpowers” were supposed to do

Brilliant Labs and launch reports presented Frame as a voice-driven visual assistant. Intended uses included:

  • asking questions about objects and surroundings;
  • translating text and speech;
  • searching the live web;
  • identifying products, landmarks and other visual subjects;
  • reading information such as food or nutrition details; and
  • showing generated images or contextual information in the wearer’s view.

Launch descriptions associated OpenAI with visual analysis, Whisper with translation or speech functions, and Perplexity with live search. Those were launch-era integrations, not a guarantee that every function was equally mature, available in every country, or processed on the glasses themselves. (Hackster)

What appears in the display

Frame uses a transparent, monocular optical system rather than a binocular immersive view. Its 0.23-inch RGB micro-OLED has a 640 × 400 resolution and a 20-degree optical field of view. The image is projected through a prism, with rendering optimized around a palette of up to 16 colors per frame. (Frame hardware documentation)

That makes the display suitable for short text, icons, prompts and simple graphics that can be checked with a glance. It is not a replacement for a phone screen, a large video surface or a full spatial-computing overlay. The single-eye design helps keep the glasses relatively light, but limits how much information can be presented comfortably at once.

Frame hardware, component by component

Component Verified specification Practical implication
Display 640 × 400 RGB color micro-OLED; 0.23-inch Glanceable color information rather than immersive imagery
Optics 20-degree monocular field of view; prism optic Small heads-up area visible to one eye
Camera 720p low-power color camera; captures 1280 × 720 and can provide cropped square images up to 720 × 720 Visual-AI input is not always delivered as a conventional 16:9 photo
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.3 / Bluetooth Low Energy Normally tethered to a phone or other host
Processing Nordic nRF52840, 64 MHz ARM Cortex-M4F, plus Lattice CrossLink-NX FPGA Embedded control, graphics and camera interfacing; not a phone-class AI computer
Audio and sensing Single MEMS microphone, three-axis accelerometer, three-axis e-compass and tap detection Voice input, motion-aware interactions and tap controls
Glasses battery Two 105 mAh lithium-ion cells, 210 mAh combined Small batteries make the charging cradle important
Charging accessory Mister Power cradle with a 140 mAh battery and USB-C charging Portable top-ups and a docking point for charging, reset and unpairing

Mister Power charges Frame through a 5V terminal. Docking automatically powers the glasses off and starts charging; the cradle can also factory-reset and unpair them. Brilliant Labs’ “all-day” battery language was a company claim, not an independently verified runtime. (Hardware documentation; Hackster)

The key fact: Frame depends on a host device

The most accurate mental model is:

Frame sensors → smartphone app → AI service → smartphone app → Frame display

The glasses supply the camera, microphone, display, motion sensors and Bluetooth link. A host application handles most application logic, network access and AI requests, then sends results back. Brilliant’s SDK documentation says Frame has no conventional app launcher or normal on-device app-installation model. Lua scripts can implement selected behaviors locally, but the consumer AI workflow generally needs a paired phone and, for remote services, an internet connection. (Frame SDK documentation)

Consequently, “AI runs in the glasses” is misleading. Frame is closer to an AI-enabled wearable sensor, input device and display than to an independent computer.

Setup and everyday operation

  1. Charge Frame and connect the Mister Power cradle for initial setup.
  2. Use a SIM-tool-like pin to hold the pairing button for about three seconds.
  3. Open a compatible host app such as Noa and complete Bluetooth pairing.
  4. Keep the phone within Bluetooth range and connected to the network for cloud-dependent features.

Documentation described Noa for iOS and Android, with an Android APK also available through Brilliant’s GitHub resources. App names, compatibility and onboarding screens can change, so the current app listing should be checked before buying. Bridge fit matters too: Brilliant documents 3 mm, 2 mm and no-adapter options, and a poorly matched nose-bridge height can make the display difficult to see. (Frame getting-started documentation)

What “open source” means for Frame

Frame is unusually accessible for experimentation. Brilliant Labs publishes hardware and software documentation, provides SDK routes for Python, Flutter, Lua and direct Bluetooth Low Energy development, and exposes interfaces for the display, camera, microphone, motion sensors and Bluetooth connection. The device includes a Lua virtual machine and Frame-specific APIs. (Hardware documentation; Lua SDK documentation)

That openness has boundaries:

  • Published firmware, APIs and hardware information do not make OpenAI, Whisper, Perplexity or other cloud models open source.
  • A developer can create a host application, but advanced AI may still require proprietary models, accounts and network services.
  • The Lua API is documented as subject to change.
  • Deep firmware work may require destructive disassembly to reach a physical debug port, so it is not a casual software modification.

Limitations that matter before buying

Phone and network dependence

Disconnect the phone, lose Bluetooth range or use an unsupported app and Frame’s central AI functions can stop working. Poor connectivity also adds latency and can make live search or translation unavailable.

Cloud and service risk

Remote processing brings possible usage caps, outages, subscription changes, model-behavior changes and questions about image or voice retention. The hardware specifications alone do not establish current retention periods or every privacy control; those details belong to the applicable Brilliant Labs privacy policy and app behavior. Small, narrow visual interface

A 20-degree, single-eye display works for glanceable prompts but cannot provide the rich, wide overlay associated with binocular AR headsets.

Recognition is fallible

Computer-vision systems can misread objects, text, food, landmarks or people. Translation quality depends on supported languages, software and network conditions. These features should assist judgment, not replace it in medical, safety-critical or financial decisions.

Privacy and bystanders

The outward-facing camera and microphone create consent issues in homes, workplaces, schools, healthcare settings and public spaces. Before use, determine when capture is visible or audible, where images and audio are sent, how long they are retained and whether camera or microphone access can be disabled. Local policies may prohibit recording even when the hardware permits it.

Safety

Brilliant Labs warns that the device can obscure vision and should not be used while driving or operating dangerous equipment. Its documentation also mentions possible eye strain, headaches and motion sickness during prolonged use. (Hardware documentation)

Who Frame suits—and who it does not

Good fit Why
Developers and hardware hackers SDKs, Lua access, Bluetooth interfaces and published documentation support experimentation.
Computer-vision and accessibility researchers A wearable camera, microphone and glanceable display enable hands-free prototypes.
Early adopters Useful for testing visual-AI interactions without carrying a larger headset.
Phone-carrying users seeking quick assistance The display can return short answers without requiring the phone to be held up.
Poor fit Reason
Standalone-computer buyers Core AI workflows depend on a host phone and often cloud services.
Immersive-AR buyers The monocular 20-degree display is not a binocular spatial environment.
Offline or cloud-averse users Connectivity and third-party services are central to the advertised experience.
Privacy-sensitive workplaces Camera and microphone use may conflict with recording rules and consent expectations.
Mainstream buyers seeking a mature ecosystem The platform’s strongest advantage is experimentation, not a large polished app catalog.

How Frame compares with other categories

Category What it emphasizes How it differs from Frame
Audio-first smart glasses Speakers, microphones and voice assistance Usually no heads-up display; typically more mainstream and less developer-open.
Camera-and-voice glasses Hands-free photos, calls and assistant requests Prioritize camera/audio convenience over a programmable visual layer.
AR display glasses Large virtual screens or spatial overlays Generally offer a wider or more immersive image, often with more hardware or a different phone/computer connection.
Enterprise smart glasses Industrial, field-service and managed deployments Target specialized workflows rather than Frame’s consumer developer platform.
Brilliant Labs Halo Brilliant Labs’ newer open-source AI-glasses direction Current product messaging, pricing and specifications should be evaluated separately from the 2024 Frame announcement.

Potential alternatives include Ray-Ban Meta for mainstream camera/audio glasses, XREAL for larger virtual displays, Vuzix for enterprise and developer deployments, and Apple Vision Pro for an entirely different immersive mixed-reality category. Their prices, capabilities and availability should be verified separately.

Verdict

Frame’s meaningful innovation is the combination of a lightweight monocular display, wearable sensors and an intentionally hackable software platform. Its “AI superpowers” are best understood as phone-mediated, cloud-assisted visual tools—not autonomous intelligence inside a pair of glasses. Choose it for development, research or early-adopter experimentation; avoid it if you need immersive AR, reliable offline operation, discreet recording-free eyewear or a mature phone-independent product.
