BYD officially supports selected Samsung Galaxy smartphones as NFC Digital Keys in specified vehicles and markets. Samsung documents car-key use through a compatible phone. The reviewed official material does not confirm that a Galaxy Watch itself can be provisioned as a BYD NFC key. A Galaxy Watch may have NFC, run Samsung Wallet payment cards or offer a BYD companion app, but none of those facts proves it contains a vehicle-authorized BYD credential.
The short answer
- Galaxy smartphone: selected models are listed for BYD NFC Digital Key, subject to vehicle, market and software compatibility.
- Galaxy Watch payments: compatible watches can use supported Samsung Wallet payment cards.
- Galaxy Watch as a BYD NFC key: not confirmed by the official BYD and Samsung documentation reviewed as of August 18, 2026.
- Apple Watch: BYD’s published manuals describe synchronizing an iPhone key to a nearby Apple Watch in supported implementations.
- BYD watch-app controls: remote commands are a different function from an NFC credential that works at the vehicle reader.
Accordingly, do not buy or configure a Galaxy Watch specifically for BYD key use without confirmation from BYD or an authorized dealer for your exact vehicle, country and software.
What “digital key” means here
BYD NFC Digital Key
This is a vehicle-authorized credential provisioned through BYD’s supported setup. You present the compatible device at the car’s exterior NFC reader to lock or unlock, then present it at an interior reader or designated tray to authorize starting. It is not simply any NFC signal.
Samsung Wallet car keys
Samsung’s car-key instructions describe using the smartphone NFC antenna (or, for supported vehicles, UWB) at the door and interior charging-pad or NFC area. They list supported vehicle partners and phone models, not a universal Galaxy Watch car-key feature: Samsung Wallet FAQ.

BYD app remote controls
A BYD app can provide status, locking or unlocking, climate control, location or range information. A watch companion may relay those commands through a phone, the internet and BYD’s cloud service. That is technically different from an offline-capable NFC credential at the car.
Physical key cards and payment cards
A physical BYD NFC card is a separate vehicle credential and is not automatically transferable to a watch. Likewise, a payment card stored in Samsung Wallet on a watch is unrelated to a BYD car key.
What BYD officially lists
BYD Europe’s Digital Key compatibility page lists selected Samsung Galaxy smartphones, including models in the Galaxy S20–S24 families, Note20 family and listed Z Flip and Z Fold generations. The exact list is market- and vehicle-dependent. The same page lists iPhone XS or later and Apple Watch Series 5 or later, but it does not list Galaxy Watch models.

Samsung Korea’s BYD support entry, updated June 16, 2026, separately lists selected Galaxy phones, including newer generations such as S25 and S26: Samsung Korea’s BYD compatibility notice. Different lists demonstrate why a phone or watch that works in one country or vehicle program cannot be assumed to work elsewhere.
What BYD manuals say about wearables
BYD manuals require both the vehicle and the device to support NFC Digital Key. They describe tapping a supported smartphone or wearable near the NFC symbol on the driver’s-side mirror for locking or unlocking, then placing it at the interior NFC symbol for starting. Authorization may expire if the car is not started promptly, requiring the device to be presented again.
The manuals specifically describe synchronizing an iPhone key to a nearby, unlocked Apple Watch. They do not provide an equivalent Galaxy Watch activation path. See the BYD SEAL 7 manual and BYD DOLPHIN manual. Another BYD manual warns that some smartphones and wearables do not support NFC Digital Key: ATTO 3 EVO manual.

How the supported Galaxy-phone setup works
This is a Galaxy-phone procedure, not a Galaxy-Watch procedure. BYD Europe’s general flow is:
- Open the My BYD app.
- Select the Digital Key tile.
- Choose Add a Digital Key.
- Accept the BYD digital-key service agreement and tap Add now.
- When prompted to add the key to Samsung Wallet, select Start.
- Place the supported Galaxy smartphone on the vehicle’s phone tray or NFC activation area and complete the in-car and app prompts.
After enrollment, use the phone at the exterior NFC reader and, depending on model, at the interior reader or tray for starting. Keep the physical key available during initial activation. Reader location and starting behavior vary by vehicle and market. Instructions: BYD Europe Digital Key.

Samsung documents Samsung Wallet setup on compatible Galaxy Watches through the Galaxy Wearable app, with a watch PIN, for supported payment cards and other wallet items: watch setup. Samsung also explains that phone and watch wallet instances are separate for card setup: phone-and-watch wallet information.

Therefore, “the watch has NFC,” “payments work,” and “the BYD app is installed” are insufficient evidence. A car key requires a vehicle-specific secure credential, manufacturer provisioning and successful operation at both the exterior and interior readers. Only an explicit BYD listing and a working enrollment path establish support.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
- Exact BYD model, model year and trim.
- Country or sales market, including whether the vehicle is imported.
- Infotainment and vehicle software version.
- Whether the vehicle has NFC Digital Key hardware and a Digital Key tile in My BYD.
- Exact phone model, Android version, NFC setting, BYD app version and Samsung Wallet version.
- BYD account ownership registration and the correct regional account.
- Physical key availability during enrollment.
BYD directs owners to BYD or an authorized dealer to confirm device compatibility, particularly for regional or wearable questions.

Practical alternatives
Use a listed Galaxy smartphone
This is the documented Samsung route. Verify the exact phone, vehicle and market before relying on it as your only key.

Use an Apple Watch where BYD supports it
BYD’s published information and manuals describe an iPhone-to-Apple-Watch setup for supported implementations. It still depends on the specific vehicle and market.
Carry a physical BYD NFC card
A physical card is a separate fallback credential. Availability and dealer provisioning vary, so ask BYD for the correct procedure.
Use app controls for convenience
Remote lock, climate and status features may be useful from a phone or watch, but they should not be treated as an offline NFC key.
What not to do
Do not clone a BYD card to a generic NFC tag, use an emulation tool or assume a payment-card transfer will create a car key. Car credentials are security-sensitive and should be provisioned only through BYD’s app, vehicle interface, Samsung’s supported wallet flow or an approved dealer.
Verdict
Selected Samsung Galaxy smartphones are officially supported BYD NFC Digital Keys, but Galaxy Watch support is not confirmed in the official documentation reviewed as of August 18, 2026. Samsung Wallet payment support, NFC hardware and a BYD watch app are separate capabilities. Treat a Galaxy Watch as a BYD NFC key only after BYD or your authorized dealer explicitly confirms the exact watch, vehicle, market and software combination.
