Apple Watch data can reveal patterns over time that may be useful to health research and worth discussing with a clinician, but it is not a general-purpose disease detector. A 2024 study linked years of wearable sleep data with later diagnoses of several conditions; it did not establish that Apple Watch can diagnose or predict those illnesses for an individual.
What years of wearable data can show
A single night offers a snapshot. Repeated measurements can show how sleep duration, regularity and estimated stages vary across many nights, potentially making patterns visible that a one-time test or recollection may miss. That longer view can be useful for studying associations with health outcomes, but an association does not show that one caused the other or tell an individual what will happen.
What the 2024 sleep study found
Zheng and colleagues analyzed 6,785 participants in the US National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program, linking commercial wearable sleep measurements with electronic health records. Participants had a median age of 50.2 years and a median sleep-monitoring period of 4.5 years. The study reported that sleep stages, duration and regularity were associated with incidence of several chronic conditions.
- More REM and deep sleep were inversely associated with the odds of incident atrial fibrillation.
- Greater sleep irregularity was associated with higher odds of incident obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
- Sleep duration had J-shaped associations with hypertension, major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
These are observational associations, not evidence that changing a sleep metric will prevent illness. The cohort was 71% female, 84% self-identified as white and 71% had a college degree, so its findings may not generalize equally to everyone. The study also examined commercial wearable data, not an Apple Watch-specific diagnostic or prediction feature. Read the study in Nature Medicine.

What Apple Watch health features do—and do not—establish
Apple describes Watch features for heart-rate sensing, single-lead ECG recordings, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications and AFib History for people already diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. These features address defined measurements or alerts; they should not be treated as broad screening for unrelated chronic diseases. Apple’s 2023 Health Report explains the scope of these functions and says irregular-rhythm notifications are intended to prompt medical evaluation. Read Apple’s Health Report.
A specific example: irregular-rhythm notifications
Apple reported that more than 400,000 people took part in the Apple Heart Study conducted with Stanford Medicine, and 0.5% received an irregular-rhythm notification. Participants who received one were offered a telehealth consultation and an ECG patch for additional monitoring. This study evaluated a targeted notification suggestive of atrial fibrillation—not whether routine Watch data can identify a wide range of longer-term illnesses. See Apple’s announcement of the study results.

Apple’s newer research and Series 12 claims
Apple’s Apple Health Study, announced with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2025, is intended to investigate whether data from Apple and third-party devices can help researchers predict, detect, monitor and manage health changes. Apple reported more than 350,000 combined participants across that study, the Apple Women’s Health Study and the Apple Hearing Study. Those figures describe Apple-reported enrollment and research aims; they do not mean each intended use is already a validated consumer feature. Read Apple’s study announcement.
In September 2026, Apple described Series 12 as measuring heart rate every five seconds and introduced a redesigned Health app with a Longevity tab that analyzes longitudinal health data. Apple says it may incorporate metrics such as VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep and HRV, along with optional lab data. These are Apple’s product descriptions, not independent proof of clinical benefit. Model, regional and software availability can affect which features a person can use. See Apple’s Series 12 announcement.

How to use a reading or trend sensibly
- Look for persistent changes relative to your own baseline rather than treating one unusual value as a diagnosis.
- Consider context such as incomplete wear, changes in routine and the specific Watch model or feature involved; a trend is only as useful as the data behind it.
- Discuss persistent unusual readings or concerns with a clinician, who can decide whether clinical measurements or tests are appropriate.
- Do not delay urgent care because a Watch reading looks normal, and do not assume an alert proves a condition.
