The Credor Phoenix is an obscure Japan-marketed chronograph associated with Seiko’s automatic Cal. 6S78. Credor’s published specification for that movement lists a 30-minute and a 12-hour chronograph register, a date, and approximately 50 hours of running time. The “Daytona-beater” label is best read as collector shorthand for an under-the-radar alternative—not as proof of a lower price, equivalent performance, or a documented Rolex rival.
What the Credor Phoenix is—and what is known about its history
Credor’s own history places the Phoenix in a broader luxury-watch context, but does not name the model. Seiko says Credor began in 1974 as a luxury brand featuring watches made from precious metals; the name derives from the French crete d’or, meaning “crest of gold.”
The model-specific account comes from Watch-Wiki, a specialist secondary reference: it identifies the Phoenix as a chronograph line marketed exclusively in Japan and associates the Credor Phoenix Chronograph, reference GCBP, with Cal. 6S78 from 1999 through 2004. That dating and market description should be treated as secondary-source reporting, not as an official Credor model history.
What the 6S78 specification says
Credor’s technical specification sheet describes Cal. 6S78, but does not identify a Phoenix watch by name. Its figures are manufacturer specifications for the movement, not measurements of the accuracy or power reserve of any particular surviving watch.

| Specification | Credor’s published detail for Cal. 6S78 |
|---|---|
| Winding | Automatic |
| Indicated functions | Hour, minute, small seconds, central chronograph seconds, chronograph 30-minute and 12-hour hands, and date |
| Frequency | 28,800 vibrations per hour |
| Stated daily gain/loss | +15 to −10 seconds |
| Duration | Approximately 50 hours |
| Jewels | 40 |
The combination of central chronograph seconds with 30-minute and 12-hour registers makes the movement’s functions easy to understand on paper. Those shared chronograph functions alone do not establish that the Phoenix and a Daytona are equivalent watches.
Why the “Daytona-beater” label needs qualification
“Daytona-beater” makes a catchy collector description, but the evidence here does not establish a direct contest with the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. There is no sourced same-period retail-price comparison, current secondary-market comparison, head-to-head test, or official claim that Credor designed the Phoenix as a Daytona substitute. Without those comparisons, “beater” is a framing or value hypothesis—not a demonstrated verdict on price or performance.

A serious comparison would need to address specific examples and evidence for each one: movement functions, dimensions and materials, provenance, condition, serviceability, and prices observed in the same market at a stated date. The 6S78 specifications answer only part of that comparison.
Do not confuse the Phoenix with Credor’s 1999 skeleton chronograph
Credor’s official history and feature material describe a different 1999 watch: the Pacifique skeleton power-reserve chronograph GBBL999, fitted with Cal. 6S99. Credor says that watch marked its international debut at Baselworld. It provides context for Credor’s chronograph work, but it is not the Phoenix GCBP or evidence that the Phoenix used the 6S99.

What to check before buying a vintage Phoenix
A published movement specification cannot tell you the condition of an individual vintage watch. Credor’s general owner guidance recommends inspection and adjustment by disassembly and cleaning—an overhaul—approximately every two to three years to maintain performance. The guidance directs owners to the original retailer or a Seiko Customer Service Center for repair information; it also says repair parts are usually retained for 10 years and cautions that repairability varies with use and that normal accuracy may not be achievable in some cases. This is general Credor guidance, not a Phoenix-specific service promise.
- Ask for service records and have the exact watch assessed by a qualified watchmaker before purchase.
- Confirm current serviceability for that reference with the seller or an appropriate Seiko service contact; the general parts-retention guidance does not establish that a particular Phoenix can be repaired today.
- Assess condition and completeness on the individual example rather than inferring either from the model’s specifications.
- Evaluate asking prices and completed sales separately, and record the date and market for any price comparison.
No current Phoenix asking price, sold-price range, inventory, verified Amazon listing, or Phoenix-specific authorized-service status is established here. A current price verdict or assurance of parts availability would therefore be unsupported.
