The “Dirty Dozen” are twelve British military watches delivered in 1945. Today, affordable microbrands reinterpret their black dials, luminous Arabic numerals and compact field-watch cases at prices far below an original set. For most buyers, the Vario 1945 D12 is the best balance of historical character, automatic movement and price; choose the Vaer C3 Dirty Dozen for the lowest-cost, lowest-maintenance option, or the Tuul Filthy 13 for the closest visual approximation among the six-watch comparison.
What are the Dirty Dozen watches?
The name refers to twelve British Ministry of Defence WWW watches—“Watch, Wrist, Waterproof”—supplied during the second half of 1945. The twelve contracted makers were Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex. Enicar was asked to participate but did not deliver a watch, so it is not one of the official twelve.
“Dirty Dozen” was not wartime military terminology. Collectors adopted the nickname decades later, after the 1967 war film The Dirty Dozen.
What the original specification looked like
The Ministry’s brief created a recognizable family rather than one identical reference. Typical features included:

- Black dial with large Arabic numerals
- Railroad-style minute track
- Small seconds at 6 o’clock
- Luminous hands and hour markers
- Robust, shock-resistant and water-resistant case
- Shatter-resistant crystal
- Large, easy-grip crown
- Usually a hand-wound mechanical movement
Broad Arrow government-property marks and “W.W.W.” caseback engravings are important historical identifiers. Case sizes, handsets and details varied by maker, which is why a modern watch can be faithful to the design language without copying one exact wartime reference.
How rare and collectible are original examples?
Collectors commonly estimate total production at about 150,000 watches, but output differed dramatically among the twelve makers. Fratello’s production table lists approximately 25,000 Omega and 25,000 Record examples, while Grana production is estimated at only 1,000–1,500. These are estimates rather than audited totals.
Hodinkee has reported that fewer than 20 complete, all-maker sets may exist. It also described an asking level of roughly $7,000 for a Grana when one appeared at auction. A single watch’s value depends heavily on originality, condition and service history.
Many surviving watches were repaired with replacement parts. Some radioactive-era luminous dials were replaced during the 1960s. A dial that looks perfect is therefore not proof that the rest of the watch is original; collectors should verify the movement, case markings, hands, dial and documented servicing together.

Which affordable Dirty Dozen homage should you buy?
Best overall balance: Vario 1945 D12
At 37mm, the Vario sits close to the compact proportions associated with the originals while retaining modern sapphire protection, 100m water resistance and an automatic Miyota 82S5 movement. Its 18mm lugs also make period-appropriate single-pass and NATO straps easy to source. It is the most broadly sensible choice when you want military character without committing to a hand-wound watch or a larger 39mm case.
Best budget and convenience choice: Vaer C3 Dirty Dozen
The 36mm Vaer is the inexpensive outlier and the only quartz model in this group. Its Ameriquartz movement avoids routine winding, while sapphire, 100m water resistance and a stated 40-month battery interval cover everyday wear. Choose it when accuracy, low maintenance and price matter more than mechanical charm.
Best for a larger wrist or tougher use: Draken Aoraki Milspec
The 39mm Draken wears largest in the comparison. Its soft-iron anti-magnetic cage adds a tool-watch feature that the others do not list, alongside sapphire and 100m water resistance. It is a better fit for someone who finds 35–37mm watches too small, but it is less dimensionally restrained than the wartime originals.

- Bold Field Style: Green dial with full Arabic numerals pairs with a matching green nylon strap for a distinctive everyday look
- Polished Case: Silver-tone 26mm brass case with a mineral glass crystal adds refined durability built to withstand years of daily wear
- Comfort Fit: Adjustable 12mm nylon strap with genuine leather trim fits wrists up to 7.5 inches for secure, everyday wear
- Night-Ready Visibility: An INDIGLO light-up dial and luminous hands ensure easy readability after dark, keeping this field watch dependable outdoors
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
Best small, dressier interpretation: Kuoe Old Smith 90-009
With a 35mm case, domed sapphire and polished finishing, the Kuoe emphasizes vintage proportion and a more refined appearance. Its 50m water resistance is adequate for ordinary daily wear but gives less margin than the 100m models.
Best upgraded finishing: Praesidus DD-45
The Praesidus costs substantially more than the Vario and Vaer in the December 2024 comparison. Its justification is a 38mm case, Landeron L24 automatic movement, double-domed sapphire and an emphasis on dial texture and modern finishing. Buy it for those finishing details rather than assuming the movement alone explains the premium.
Closest visual recreation: Tuul Filthy 13
The 38mm Tuul uses a hand-wound Sellita SW261-1 and combines it with sapphire and 100m water resistance. Manual winding is closer to the operating experience of most original WWW watches, and the model was judged the closest visual approximation within this six-watch set. It suits buyers who value dial, handset and overall silhouette above automatic convenience.
Timor and Vertex: the names with direct wartime lineage
Timor and Vertex are not merely using a generic military aesthetic: both were among the original twelve makers. Timor’s Heritage Field WWW is presented as a direct lineage piece, while Vertex’s current range modernizes its wartime design. Their historical connection may matter more to a collector than small differences in crystal or movement specifications, so compare the current references, dimensions and prices directly with the six alternatives above.

How to compare a Dirty Dozen field watch
1. Start with case diameter and lug-to-lug fit
Diameter alone does not determine wearability. The listed choices span 35mm to 39mm, and lug-to-lug length, bezel shape and case thickness can make two watches of the same diameter feel different. Measure a watch that already fits you and compare its full dimensions before ordering.
2. Decide how you want the movement to behave
- Quartz: the Vaer is the practical choice for grab-and-go accuracy and minimal maintenance.
- Automatic: Vario, Draken, Kuoe and Praesidus avoid daily winding but require mechanical servicing over time.
- Hand-wound: the Tuul provides the most traditional interaction and a movement type associated with most original WWW watches.
3. Treat crystal material as a real durability difference
Every model in this comparison lists sapphire, including the Vaer’s flat sapphire and the domed or double-domed forms used by Kuoe and Praesidus. Doming changes reflections and vintage character; it is not automatically a sign of better scratch resistance than another sapphire crystal.
4. Check water resistance and crown construction
Five of the six listed models specify 100m water resistance; Kuoe specifies 50m. Water-resistance ratings describe pressure testing, not permission to operate a crown underwater. Confirm that the crown is fully seated and have seals tested during servicing.
5. Prioritize legibility and lume
Legibility was the central military requirement. Look for strong contrast between the black dial, luminous numerals and hands, and a clearly printed minute track. Published lume compound, brightness and duration are not stated uniformly across this comparison, so do not infer equal night performance from appearance alone.

6. Judge historical fidelity at the detail level
Compare the handset, numeral shape, minute track, seconds subdial, crown, case finishing and caseback markings—not just the presence of a black dial. Modern watches generally omit genuine government property marks; adding a Broad Arrow or “W.W.W.” engraving would not by itself make a watch an original military issue.
Why prices differ so much
The six listed watches range from $254 to $899. Fratello’s comparison argues that finishing often explains the difference more than the movement, crystal or amount of lume alone. Case polishing or brushing, dial texture, printing, hands, crystal profile, strap quality, assembly and quality control can all affect the price while using movements with broadly comparable functions.
For that reason, compare the complete watch rather than ranking models by movement brand or water-resistance number in isolation.
Straps and everyday setup
A single-pass or NATO strap reinforces the utilitarian look and makes seasonal changes simple. Check the lug width before buying: the Vario is listed with 18mm lugs, while other models may use different widths. A strap should not obscure caseback markings or interfere with crown operation, and a watch worn in water should use a strap and buckle that remain secure when wet.

Buy the Vaer C3 Dirty Dozen for the lowest-cost, low-maintenance interpretation; the Vario 1945 D12 for the strongest all-round balance; the Draken for a larger, anti-magnetic tool watch; the Kuoe for compact polished styling; the Praesidus for upgraded finishing; and the Tuul for a hand-wound, visually focused recreation. Timor and Vertex deserve special attention when the maker’s direct connection to the original twelve is part of the appeal. None is an original 1945 WWW watch, and vintage authenticity still depends on documented originality, condition and service history.
