METAS Master Chronometer is an independent certification for a finished mechanical watch—not just its movement. It adds complete-watch checks for chronometric performance, magnetic resistance, water resistance and power reserve to the chronometer requirements of ISO 3159. The best-known designation is “MASTER CHRONOMETER Certified 15 000 Gauss,” although compliant watches may also use the shorter “MASTER CHRONOMETER” name.
What does METAS Master Chronometer mean?
METAS is the Federal Institute of Metrology in Switzerland. Its Master Chronometer program evaluates the assembled watch, sometimes described by METAS as the “watch head,” through an independently monitored process.
A watch can enter the program only when it is Swiss Made and its movement already meets the chronometer requirements of ISO 3159. METAS then applies additional requirements to the completed watch, including testing for rate performance, magnetic resistance, water resistance and power reserve.
The certification is therefore a statement about a specific finished watch configuration. It is not simply a second name for a movement that has passed a chronometer test.

How is a METAS watch different from a COSC chronometer?
In specialist terminology, “chronometer” normally refers to a movement that has passed ISO 3159 testing. METAS Master Chronometer retains that prerequisite but extends the assessment to the assembled watch.
| Assessment area | ISO 3159 chronometer prerequisite | METAS Master Chronometer |
|---|---|---|
| What is tested | The movement | The completed watch, with the movement prerequisite already met |
| Chronometric performance | ISO 3159 movement criteria | Rate-performance checks included in the METAS test program |
| Magnetic resistance | Not stated in the supplied METAS material | Required; the 15,000-gauss designation identifies this aspect |
| Water resistance | Not stated in the supplied METAS material | Tested on the finished watch |
| Power reserve | Not stated in the supplied METAS material | Included in the certification requirements |
| Oversight and quality system | Not stated in the supplied METAS material | Testing is independently monitored; the brand’s quality system must be approved by METAS |
This is why “METAS is better than COSC” is an incomplete question. METAS incorporates an ISO 3159-certified movement, then assesses additional properties of the watch as sold. A COSC or other ISO 3159 chronometer designation answers a narrower movement-level question.
What does 15,000 gauss mean?
15,000 gauss is the magnetic-resistance level named in METAS-N001 version 1.2. A compliant watch may be designated “MASTER CHRONOMETER Certified 15 000 Gauss.” The shorter “MASTER CHRONOMETER” wording is also permitted.
The figure describes the magnetic field used in the certification requirement; it is not a statement that every component is made from a particular material. The relevant result is that the finished watch completes the prescribed magnetic-resistance assessment while continuing through the rest of the test program.

What tests does METAS perform?
METAS’s technical publication describes a program that goes beyond ISO 3159 by testing complete watches. The publication describes 10 test cycles covering magnetic resistance, rate performance and water resistance, alongside the program’s power-reserve requirements.
Movement and watch-level checks
The process includes both movement testing and tests of the assembled watch. This distinction matters because casing, dial, hands, seals and other elements can affect the performance that the owner actually experiences.
Chronometric performance
Rate performance is evaluated as part of the METAS program rather than inferred solely from the movement’s earlier ISO 3159 result. The certification consequently concerns the watch in its finished state.
Magnetic resistance
The program includes magnetic-resistance testing to the level associated with the 15,000-gauss designation. The result is recorded within the certification process rather than presented as a separate marketing specification detached from the watch-level tests.

Water resistance
Water resistance is tested on the completed watch. METAS certification does not replace the manufacturer’s water-resistance rating or care instructions; it confirms that water resistance is one of the properties checked within this certification framework.
Power reserve
Power reserve is one of the certification’s required areas. The test concerns the watch’s ability to deliver its specified running autonomy under the prescribed procedure, not a guarantee that every owner will obtain an identical duration in every wearing pattern.
What does METAS-N001 require?
METAS-N001 version 1.2 sets out the program’s formal prerequisites and controls:
- The watch must qualify as Swiss Made.
- Its movement must meet ISO 3159:2009 chronometer criteria.
- Testing must be conducted by a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
- The required movement and watch test cycles must be completed.
- METAS performs statistical analysis and sample checks.
- The participating brand must operate a quality system approved by METAS.
METAS-N001 also states that the testing processes are independently monitored by METAS. Certification is therefore tied not only to test results but also to laboratory competence, sampling and the manufacturer’s quality controls.

Which brands can obtain the certification?
The program is open to all brands whose Swiss Made watches have a movement certified as a chronometer according to ISO 3159. That describes eligibility, not a list of brands that currently participate. A brand must also satisfy the METAS testing, laboratory and quality-system requirements before a particular watch can carry the designation.
METAS and Omega announced their collaboration on 9 December 2014. METAS records the announcement of the first Omega Master Chronometer watch on 21 October 2015. The program’s stated eligibility is broader than that history: certification is not defined as an Omega-only standard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a Master Chronometer watch worth buying?
For a buyer who values documented testing of the complete watch, the designation offers more information than a movement-only chronometer claim. It brings magnetic resistance, water resistance, power reserve and watch-level rate checks into one independently monitored framework.
It is not, by itself, a complete buying decision. The certification does not establish current retail price, finishing quality, design preference, service experience, long-term ownership cost or whether a particular model suits your wrist. Those questions must be assessed separately for the exact reference.
Best Value
Choose the certification when you value
- A finished-watch assessment rather than movement-only certification.
- A stated 15,000-gauss magnetic-resistance requirement.
- Independent monitoring and a METAS-approved quality system.
- Documented checks for water resistance and power reserve in addition to rate performance.
Compare beyond the certificate when you need
- A particular case size, bracelet, complication or dial design.
- Service availability in your country.
- A water-resistance rating appropriate to your intended use.
- Evidence about ownership costs or durability outside the certification procedures.
How to verify a watch’s METAS status
- Check the exact model reference, not only the brand name.
- Look for the “MASTER CHRONOMETER” or “MASTER CHRONOMETER Certified 15 000 Gauss” designation in the manufacturer’s specifications and watch documentation.
- Confirm that the watch is presented as Swiss Made and that its movement is an ISO 3159 chronometer prerequisite.
- Read the stated water-resistance and power-reserve specifications separately; METAS testing does not make those figures interchangeable.
- Ask an authorized retailer or the brand to clarify whether the certification applies to the specific reference and movement variant you are considering.
A retailer’s use of the word “chronometer” alone does not establish Master Chronometer certification. The complete designation and model documentation matter.
What the certification does not prove
- It does not prove that a watch will keep exactly the same rate in every position, temperature or wearing pattern.
- It does not make a watch immune to damage, magnetization outside the specified procedure or poor maintenance.
- It does not rank case finishing, decoration, design or brand service.
- It does not provide a universal price or value guarantee.
- It does not mean that every watch from an eligible brand is certified.
Those limits are not weaknesses in the standard; they define what the certificate is intended to communicate: controlled performance and quality checks on a qualifying finished Swiss Made mechanical watch.
METAS Master Chronometer in one sentence
It is an independently monitored certification for a Swiss Made mechanical watch whose movement has first met ISO 3159 chronometer criteria and whose completed form has additionally passed METAS checks for rate performance, magnetic resistance, water resistance and power reserve.
