The smaller size joined the regular collection in 2024, first in Grade 23 titanium and red gold; a permanent-collection steel model followed. It is more compact by comparison, not necessarily small on the wrist: independent launch coverage measured the case at 42.3 mm across and 14.3 mm thick.
What changed with the 42 mm Fifty Fathoms?
The significant change is the case size, not a new movement family. The modern 45 mm Fifty Fathoms Automatique debuted in 2007 with Calibre 1315. In 2024, Blancpain extended the current Automatique collection with the 5010 in a nominal 42 mm diameter while retaining the movement and the line’s core layout, including its sapphire-topped bezel. Blancpain announced the titanium and red-gold models on 19 March 2024 as non-limited collection pieces. Blancpain’s launch announcement and its March 2024 technical press document describe the collection and movement.
The timing can be confusing: Blancpain had already made a 42 mm steel Fifty Fathoms as part of the 2023 Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 1 limited edition. That anniversary watch is distinct from the later regular-collection 5010 family. The permanent steel Automatique arrived after the 2024 titanium and red-gold launch.
How large is it in practice?
“42 mm” is Blancpain’s nominal case-size description. Fratello’s March 2024 launch report gives the more precise diameter as 42.3 mm, with a thickness of 14.3 mm and lug spacing of 21.5 mm. The same report lists water resistance of 300 m. These are reported specifications, not a claim that the watch will wear like a small diver: its thickness and overall presence still make it a substantial sports watch. Wrist fit also depends on wrist shape, strap or bracelet, and personal preference; the dimensions alone cannot establish how it will sit on an individual wrist. Fratello’s launch coverage is the source for those precise measurements and depth rating.

How does the 42 mm version compare with the 45 mm?
The 5010’s clearest distinction is its smaller nominal case diameter. The available launch information does not establish a complete side-by-side set of measurements for the 45 mm model, so the four-millimetre nominal difference should not be treated as a precise prediction of how much smaller the watch will feel. Both belong to the modern Fifty Fathoms Automatique line, and the 42 mm version carries forward Calibre 1315 rather than trading down to a different movement architecture.
Materials, dials and wear options
The 2024 launch family offered Grade 23 titanium and red gold, each with black or blue dial-and-bezel variants. Blancpain’s launch materials describe sail-canvas, NATO and Tropic-textured rubber strap options, and a matching titanium bracelet for titanium versions. Fratello reported no red-gold bracelet option at launch. Blancpain’s editorial account of the new family discusses its titanium choice and variants in A New FIFTY FATHOMS.

The later permanent steel model is a separate configuration rather than simply a steel option listed in the first 2024 launch. Blancpain describes it with a polished stainless-steel case, sunburst black dial and black unidirectional bezel with a domed sapphire insert. Buyers could choose a steel bracelet or Tropic rubber strap; the rubber option was offered with a pin buckle or deployant clasp. Details are in Blancpain’s steel-model announcement.
Calibre 1315 and its five-day reserve
Calibre 1315 is an automatic movement with three barrels coupled in series. Blancpain states that this arrangement provides a five-day power reserve; Fratello expresses the same reserve as 120 hours and reports 227 components. The official technical document describes an in-house movement with stop-seconds and an 18K red-gold oscillating weight with NAC coating. Blancpain’s steel release also identifies a silicon balance spring. These are source-described technical details, not independent performance test results.
