The 2024 stainless-steel IWC Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide, reference IW344002, brings the tide-and-moon complication to a black-dial steel case and pairs it with automatic calibre 82836, which has a silicon hairspring. IWC’s current UK listing confirms the hairspring material; Monochrome’s contemporary launch report described it as IWC’s first use of silicon in a hairspring.
What changed with the 2024 steel model?
The IW344002 is the steel, black-dial version of the Portugieser Yacht Club Moon & Tide. IWC introduced the original gold model in 2020 as the first IWC watch with its new tide indication. The 2024 update keeps the same 44.6 mm case diameter and 13.4 mm height as the gold model, while changing the case and dial materials and using calibre 82836 instead of calibre 82835.

The water-resistance figures come from different regional product listings, so they should not be read as a universal specification comparison. The steel model’s 44.6 mm diameter is also worth considering in person: it is a substantial watch, even though its listed height is 13.4 mm.
What does the tide indicator show?
The tide display is designed to indicate the shifting time of the next high tide. IWC explains that successive high tides are separated by about 12 hours and 24 minutes. Its explainer describes a reducing gear that slows the tide disc to one rotation every 14.76 days, with a 49-part tide module integrated into calibre 82835. Those mechanism details explain the earlier implementation; IWC’s explainer does not establish that every detail is unchanged in the newer calibre 82836.

Monochrome’s 2024 account describes the display at 6 o’clock as indicating expected times for the next high and low tides, and says it is initially calibrated at the crown using local tide-table information. The same report gives a deviation of 10 minutes over 100 years; that is a figure reported by the publication, not an independently verified performance test here.
How do the moon displays relate to spring and neap tides?
At 12 o’clock, the double moon-phase display represents the northern and southern hemispheres and is combined with the spring/neap tide indication. Monochrome explains that spring tides correspond with new and full moons. The complication presents the lunar and tidal relationship mechanically, but it is not a substitute for current, location-specific tide tables when planning boating, swimming or other coastal activity.

What is notable about calibre 82836?
IWC lists calibre 82836 as an automatic movement with a 60-hour power reserve, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), 232 components and 25 jewels. The brand says the silicon hairspring provides increased protection against magnetic fields.
IWC’s current product page confirms that IW344002 has a silicon hairspring. The historical distinction requires attribution: Monochrome’s report of 28 August 2024 called calibre 82836 the first IWC movement to use one. IWC’s product listing confirms the material for this watch but does not itself make that broader first-use claim.

At access in 2026, IWC’s UK product page listed the steel IW344002 at £20,800 including VAT. Monochrome reported a launch price of CHF 22,000 in August 2024. These are figures from different markets and dates, so they are context rather than a like-for-like price change; availability and local pricing may vary.
