Its movement runs horizontally, while an optical-grade sapphire prism turns the hour-and-minute display 90 degrees so the wearer can read it from the side of the wrist. The current watch is not digital: it uses mechanical discs, a jumping-hour mechanism and a Swiss automatic movement.
The collection now ranges from conventional steel and black DLC versions to a NASA-themed ceramic model and sapphire-heavy limited editions. Officially displayed prices run from about CHF 2,900 to at least CHF 5,150 before taxes, with availability changing as limited runs sell through.
What is the Amida Digitrend?
Amida’s Digitrend is a driver’s watch: a watch designed to be read without turning the wrist toward the face. The case presents the time along its side, allowing a driver to glance down while keeping the hand closer to the steering wheel. The modern version preserves the unusual layout of the original 1976 mechanical Digitrend rather than replacing it with an electronic screen.
AMIDA describes the system as a Light Reflecting Display (LRD). A horizontal mechanical movement drives separate hour and minute discs. A sapphire prism reflects those discs vertically and magnifies the numerals, creating the side-on image that defines the watch. The display is therefore optical and mechanical: there is no battery-powered or electronic display in the described model.

How the driver’s-watch display works
Horizontal mechanics, vertical reading
Conventional watches place the dial above the movement and display the hands from the front. The Digitrend rotates that relationship: the movement works horizontally inside the case, and the prism redirects the image toward the wearer’s side view. The result looks like a digital readout at a glance, but every indication is generated by mechanical parts.
Jumping hours and trailing minutes
The hour changes instantaneously through a unidirectional jumping-hour system, while the minute indication follows it in the usual continuous progression. AMIDA says the auxiliary jumping-hour module contains nine mechanical components secured by six screws. This module sits alongside the automatic base movement rather than replacing it with quartz or electronics.
The movement listed for the Black model
The Black specification names the Soprod NEWTON P092, a Swiss automatic mechanical calibre with 23 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and a stated power reserve of 44 hours. Individual specifications for every edition are not provided on the cited pages, so buyers should verify the calibre for a particular reference before ordering.

Case, dimensions and daily wear
The Black model measures 39.6 mm wide, 39 mm long and 15.6 mm high. It uses a 316L stainless-steel case with black DLC coating, combining satin-brushed and polished surfaces. The listed lug width is 22 mm and the stated weight is 110 g. Water resistance is 5 ATM (50 m), suitable for everyday splashes but not a basis for treating the watch as a dedicated swimming or diving instrument. See the Black specifications for the complete listing.
The prism is a functional optical component rather than a decorative crystal. Its geometry determines the side-view legibility and is central to the Digitrend’s thickness and case shape. The 39.6-by-39-mm footprint is relatively compact across the wrist, but the 15.6-mm height and projecting side display give it a much more substantial presence than a conventional round watch of similar width.
The NASA Tribute keeps the basic footprint but is listed at 90 g. It adds a white ceramic top shell and a bi-material leather-and-technical-fabric strap with hook-and-loop closure. Its specifications are on AMIDA’s NASA Tribute page.

Limited editions and waitlists
For Open Sapphire and other numbered or recent editions, a sold-out page with a waitlist is materially different from an in-stock listing. Confirm the edition number, seller authorization, warranty coverage, taxes and return terms before sending payment. Archive labels such as OSI and Steel Take Off indicate past collection entries, not proof of current stock.

Choose Steel for the original idea at the lowest displayed price
Steel is the straightforward way to get the 1970s-inspired case concept without the Black model’s DLC treatment or the more elaborate limited-edition executions. It is the logical starting point if the optical display and driver’s-watch ergonomics matter more than rarity.
Choose Black for the clearest published specification set
Black has the most complete cited technical data: the NEWTON P092 automatic movement, 316L DLC case, 39.6-by-39-by-15.6-mm dimensions, 5 ATM rating and 110 g weight. Its two different displayed prices make direct checkout verification especially important.

Choose NASA Tribute for a lighter, themed configuration
The NASA Tribute changes the visual treatment with a white ceramic top shell and uses a hook-and-loop bi-material strap. Its listed 90 g weight is lower than Black’s 110 g, making it the variant to examine if the space-program styling and lighter specification appeal to you.
Choose OSII or Open Sapphire for visible exclusivity
OSII carries the collection’s highest displayed price at CHF 5,150. Open Sapphire is limited to 150 numbered watches and is currently shown as sold out with a waitlist. These editions make sense for buyers prioritizing scarcity or more exposed visual mechanics, not for someone simply seeking the basic Digitrend experience.
What the Digitrend is—and is not
- It is a Swiss automatic mechanical watch with an optical prism and mechanical hour-and-minute discs.
- It is not a smartwatch, quartz display or conventional front-facing dial watch.
- Its driver’s-watch layout improves side-glance readability, but the unusual case height and prism require a different wearing experience.
- Its 5 ATM rating supports ordinary daily exposure to water, not a diving specification.
- Edition names, prices, stock and delivery promises can change; verify the exact reference and seller terms before purchase.
Bottom line
The 2024 Amida Digitrend revival succeeds because it keeps the original mechanical problem-solving intact: a horizontal movement, a sapphire prism and a side-readable display. The modern range lets you choose between relatively accessible Steel and Black models, a lighter NASA Tribute, and scarcer OSII or Open Sapphire executions. Buy it for that distinctive optical-mechanical architecture and 1970s design lineage—not because it behaves like an electronic digital watch.
