Galaxy Watch6 Can Check Nearby Object Temperatures—With Important Limits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—the Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic have an infrared temperature sensor, and Samsung introduced a Thermo Check app that can estimate the surface temperature of nearby objects without touching them. Samsung specifically cited food and ocean water as examples. But this is a short-range surface estimate, not a calibrated room thermometer, cooking thermometer, or medical device.

What temperatures can the Galaxy Watch6 check?

There are three different capabilities that are easy to confuse. Samsung lists a temperature sensor in the Watch6 series, and identifies it as an infrared sensor on its product page. Its software and developer documentation describe object-surface checks, skin-temperature data, and ambient-temperature data around the watch.

Feature What it measures Intended context Important limit
Thermo Check Estimated surface temperature of a nearby object Casual checks of food, water, or another surface Samsung’s launch announcement gives examples but does not establish a universal accuracy specification or operating range.
Skin-temperature tracking The wearer’s skin surface Health and sleep-related tracking, including cycle tracking Samsung says this is not the same as body temperature.
Ambient-temperature data Temperature around the watch Data available through Samsung’s Health Sensor system A worn watch is affected by skin heat, clothing, airflow, and its own temperature; it is not automatically a room thermometer.

Samsung’s developer documentation defines an AMBIENT_TEMPERATURE value as ambient temperature around the Galaxy Watch. That definition does not mean the value is a calibrated reading of free air in a room, especially while the watch is on a wrist.

What is Thermo Check, and what can it do?

Thermo Check is an app Samsung introduced with the Watch6 generation. The company described using it to check the temperature of a meal or ocean water without contact. That makes the feature real—not just a hidden skin-temperature reading—but the examples are not a certification for pool, food-safety, or scientific measurement.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 43mm Smartwatch with Rotating Bezel, Fitness Tracker, Advanced Sleep Coaching, Heart Monitor - Black (Renewed)
  • Rotating Bezel Design: Classic rotating bezel enables precise control and smooth navigation.

Infrared sensing estimates the temperature of a surface from the radiation it emits. It does not reveal the temperature inside a drink or meal, and it is not a thermal camera that can measure reliably from any distance. The target needs to occupy enough of the sensor’s field of view; distance, angle, surface finish, reflections, and surrounding conditions can affect what the sensor sees.

Samsung’s launch material confirms the app and example uses, but does not publish a complete Thermo Check accuracy specification or a universally applicable measurement range. No defensible percentage error can be assigned from those claims alone.

When is a Watch6 temperature check useful?

  • Low-stakes curiosity: Get a quick estimate of whether a nearby surface or water is broadly cool, warm, or hot.
  • Convenient comparisons: Check surfaces without touching them, provided the target is close enough and large enough for the sensor to read.
  • Experimenting: Explore the watch’s temperature-sensing capability, while treating results as estimates rather than reference measurements.

Samsung’s ocean-water example does not establish that the watch can certify a pool’s temperature. Sunlight, moving water, wind, and the distance to the target may all affect a surface reading.

When should you use a different thermometer?

Need Better choice Why
Checking for fever or making a health decision A suitable medical thermometer The Watch6 reads skin temperature, which Samsung says is not body temperature and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.
Checking whether food is safely cooked A food thermometer designed to measure internal temperature Thermo Check estimates a surface; a surface reading cannot establish the food’s internal temperature.
Repeatable surface measurements or technical work A purpose-built thermometer suited to the task Dedicated devices provide measurement instructions and specifications for their intended use; the Watch6’s launch material does not provide a complete accuracy specification.
Exact room or outdoor weather readings A suitable room sensor or weather instrument The watch’s ambient value describes conditions around the device, which can be influenced by wearing it.

Why can a reading be misleading?

Samsung does not publish a Thermo Check error margin in the cited launch announcement. The following are practical limitations of infrared surface measurement, not Watch6 laboratory test results:

SAMSUNG Galaxy Watch 6 40mm Bluetooth Smartwatch w/ Fitness Tracker, Personalized HR Zones, Advanced Sleep Coaching, Heart Monitor, BIA Sensor, US Version, Gold (Renewed)
  • Smart watch with Wear OS by Samsung, Made of aluminum in Gold color Frame (Cream Band).
  • Offers Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz, GPS and NFC. Ultra-durable sapphire crystal glass makes for a resilient and sturdy watch display, while IP68 and 5ATM ratings mean your watch is tough enough to stay with you on your adventures.
  • Understand your nights to make the most of your days; wear your Galaxy Watch6 to bed and monitor your nightly sleep stage, sleep score and sleep consistency to improve your sleep.
  • Sync your Galaxy Watch with your Galaxy smartphone, Tab, and Buds for a completely connected experience.
  • The watch has its own temperature. Recent charging, direct sun, or warmth from the wrist may affect the sensor or the conditions around it.
  • Distance and target size matter. If the target is small or far away, the reading may include surrounding surfaces.
  • Angle and surface properties matter. Reflective, shiny, wet, or unusual surfaces may produce less dependable readings than a suitable matte target.
  • Surface is not interior. Water or food can have a different temperature below the surface than at it.
  • Air and motion matter. Wind, airflow, and moving water can change surface conditions.
  • Calibration is not implied. Having a sensor or an app reading does not establish calibration for cooking, medical, pool, laboratory, or industrial use.

How does skin-temperature tracking differ?

Samsung Health’s skin-temperature feature is intended for tracking the wearer’s skin, including during sleep; it is separate from Thermo Check’s object readings. Samsung recommends wearing the watch for at least four hours during sleep and at least five nights per week for more useful cycle-tracking results. Those recommendations concern cycle tracking, not Thermo Check’s object-measurement procedure.

Samsung advises allowing at least 30 minutes after charging before relying on skin-temperature readings and keeping the infrared sensor lens clean. Consistent, snug wear supports trend tracking. Environmental conditions, illness, medication, travel, disrupted routines, alcohol, unusual sleep duration, charging heat, and a dirty sensor can affect results. Treat skin-temperature information as a trend, not an absolute body-temperature reading.

Samsung states that health-sensor data is for wellness and fitness and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Do not use a Watch6 reading to assess a fever or make medical decisions; use an appropriate medical thermometer when body temperature matters.

Does every Galaxy Watch6 owner have Thermo Check?

The hardware and app were announced for the Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic. That does not establish that the app is currently available to every owner in every country or software configuration. Availability, app support, menu labels, and compatibility can vary with region, watch and phone software, and Samsung’s current support rules. Samsung’s 2023 announcement confirms the feature’s introduction, not its availability in every configuration in 2026.

For the health features listed on Samsung’s U.S. Watch6 specification sheet, the stated phone requirements are Android 10 or later, at least 2GB of RAM, and Samsung Health 6.22 or later. Samsung’s Levant product page gives a different memory requirement—at least 1.5GB—so these figures should not be treated as one universal requirement for all regions or for Thermo Check specifically. Check current local compatibility information before relying on a particular feature.

What to check if you cannot find Thermo Check or distrust a reading

If the app is missing

  • Check whether Thermo Check is installed and supported for your country and software configuration.
  • Confirm that the watch and paired phone meet the current compatibility requirements.
  • Check for available software and app updates; names and availability may differ by version.
  • Do not confuse Samsung Health skin-temperature tracking with Thermo Check’s object-surface measurement.

If a reading looks wrong

  1. Consider whether the watch has just been charging, sitting in sun, or been warmed by the wrist.
  2. Check that the infrared sensor lens is clean.
  3. Bring the target closer and ensure it fills the sensor’s view; avoid judging a tiny or distant target.
  4. Try a less reflective target and avoid awkward angles, moving water, or strong airflow.
  5. Remember that the reading is for a surface, not the inside of food or liquid.
  6. If precision or safety matters, use a thermometer designed for that measurement.

Is temperature checking a reason to buy a Galaxy Watch6?

It is best treated as a bonus for someone who already wants the Watch6’s broader smartwatch features. The feature is unusually interesting and can be handy for casual, short-range surface estimates, but Samsung’s cited material does not establish professional accuracy or universal current availability. Buy a suitable dedicated thermometer when repeatability, food safety, medical use, or technical precision matters.

Samsung announced general availability of the Watch6 series on August 11, 2023, so it is an older-generation watch by 2026. Do not assume its launch price remains a current selling price or that the temperature feature alone makes it a sound purchase.
