The Glashütte Original SeaQ 39.5mm is a strong choice if you want a compact, traditionally styled mechanical diver rather than an oversized tool watch. Its appeal rests on wearable proportions, a finely finished manufacture movement, a practical date and a 200-metre rating. The main buying decision is not whether the watch is capable of diving, but which bracelet or strap reference suits your wrist and which regional price applies.
Is the SeaQ 39.5mm a good dive watch?
Yes, provided your priorities are compact dimensions, luxury finishing and everyday wear. The SeaQ combines a screw-down crown, unidirectional bezel, sapphire crystal and closed engraved case back with a 20 bar water-resistance specification. Specialist coverage reports DIN 8306 and ISO 6425 certification for the SeaQ series; that is a published specification, not a claim of personal pressure testing.
Its bold printed numerals and luminous treatment are designed for underwater legibility, while the date at 3 o’clock makes the watch more useful outside the water. The trade-off is that its shorter power reserve and dressier finishing may matter more to some buyers than maximum autonomy or a purely utilitarian design.

- Glashutte Original SeaQ Automatic Green Dial Men's Watch 1-39-11-13-83-34
Movement and finishing
Calibre 39-11 is an in-house automatic movement operating at 4 Hz. Its approximately 40-hour reserve is sufficient for daily use, although it will usually stop after a weekend off the wrist. Central seconds, hacking seconds and a date provide the functions most owners expect from a daily mechanical watch.
The visible mechanical character is more elaborate than the specification sheet alone suggests: the movement is described with Glashütte striping, bevelled edges, a swan-neck fine adjustment and a skeletonised rotor. Those details support the SeaQ’s luxury positioning, but they also mean servicing should be treated as specialist mechanical-watch maintenance rather than ordinary quartz-watch upkeep. No independent accuracy or service-interval claim is established here.

How the 39.5 mm case wears
The compact diameter is the SeaQ’s defining wearing advantage. It gives the watch a more controlled footprint than many contemporary dive watches, while the roughly 12 mm height retains enough presence for a rotating bezel and 200-metre construction. On a smaller or medium wrist, that combination is less likely to overhang; on a larger wrist, it creates a deliberately vintage-leaning proportion rather than a large modern-diver look.
Case diameter alone does not determine comfort. Lug shape, bracelet articulation, clasp position and your wrist circumference all affect the fit, so try the exact reference whenever possible. A steel-bracelet version will feel more substantial than the same case on nylon or rubber.

Bracelet, rubber or nylon: which strap should you choose?
The standard lug is 20 mm, and documented factory configurations include steel bracelet, rubber and nylon. Reference numbers identify the strap and clasp supplied, so confirm the complete reference rather than assuming every 39.5mm SeaQ has the same hardware.
| Configuration | Best suited to | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Steel bracelet | One-watch use, office wear and maximum visual continuity | Weight and clasp fit; a Monochrome review describes an eight-step fine-adjustment diver extension |
| Rubber | Frequent water use and a closer, more resilient fit | Whether the reference uses a pin buckle or folding clasp |
| Nylon | Lightness, quick drying and a more casual tool-watch character | Pin-buckle versus folding-clasp specification and strap length |
If you change straps, verify the lug hardware and spring-bar arrangement for your particular reference before ordering a replacement. A 20 mm strap is the correct nominal width, but end geometry and retaining hardware still need to match.

- Confirm fit: assess the compact diameter and stated case height on your wrist, not only in photographs.
- Identify the complete reference: bracelet, rubber and nylon versions can use different clasp systems and prices.
- Choose the adjustment system: the bracelet’s documented fine-adjustment extension is useful for changing wrist size in warm conditions; a pin buckle is simpler and lighter.
- Verify the seller and regional total: compare the final tax-inclusive cost in your market with the dated listings above.
- Plan specialist care: retain the reference and movement details for future servicing and use an appropriately qualified watchmaker.
Bottom line for prospective owners
The SeaQ 39.5mm makes the most sense for someone who wants a genuinely capable 200-metre diver in a restrained case, with manufacture-movement decoration and a useful date. Select the bracelet if you want one versatile, integrated setup; choose rubber or nylon for a lighter and more casual wearing experience. Because prices and supplied hardware differ by reference and region, the exact configuration is as important as the SeaQ name on the dial.
