Google’s January 2025 release of PebbleOS source code gives the long-discontinued smartwatch platform a substantial preservation and development foundation—but it is not a ready-to-install firmware update. The public repository is incomplete, will not compile as-is, and still requires replacement components and engineering work.
What Google released on January 27, 2025
Rebble reported on January 27, 2025, that Google had made PebbleOS source code public. The release was open to everyone, not a code handoff reserved for Rebble. That distinction matters: any qualified developer can inspect and work from the code, while Rebble can use the original software as an additional foundation for its own platform work.
The Google repository describes itself as the latest version of an internal Pebble Technology repository for software that ran on Pebble watches. It is best understood as a historically important code base and starting point for development, not as a downloadable update for owners.
What the source code does—and does not—let you do
It enables preservation and new development
- Developers can study how PebbleOS was structured and how the watch software interacted with hardware.
- Community projects can work from original implementation details instead of recreating every behavior from observation.
- Rebble and other developers have a clearer base for investigating compatibility, repairs and future builds.
- Existing developer tools and community projects—including communication libraries, emulators, a Pebble-focused QEMU fork and Pebble.js—provide surrounding context for experimentation.
It is not a finished firmware image
The repository README states: “Proprietary source code has been removed from this repository and it will not compile as-is.” That is the practical boundary for owners. Downloading the repository does not produce a firmware file that can simply be flashed onto a Pebble watch.

Seamlessly sync with Apple Health, Google Fit, and Strava to manage fitness tracking, wellness insights, and daily activity data in one connected ecosystem.
The missing pieces include system fonts; most of the Bluetooth stack, leaving an emulator stub; the STM peripheral library; a voice codec; ARM CMSIS; and, for Pebble 2 HR, the heart-rate monitor driver. Replacements would be needed for the related functionality, and a successful build would still need hardware-specific validation.
Why Rebble says the release is important but not immediate
Rebble welcomed the release as a way to accelerate its work while warning that substantial preparation remained. Will Murphy wrote for Rebble: “This does not mean we instantly have the ability to start developing updates for PebbleOS though, we first will need to spend some concentrated time getting it to build.”

- STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
- PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
- UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
- FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
- FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.
That qualification separates three stages that are easy to confuse:
- Source availability: the original code is publicly inspectable.
- A reproducible build: developers replace omitted components, resolve dependencies and produce working binaries.
- A supported release: a tested build is packaged for particular watch models and can be installed safely.
The January 2025 release established the first stage. The available material does not establish a completed, model-by-model production firmware release for every Pebble watch.

Can you install the released PebbleOS code on an old Pebble?
Not directly. The repository’s explicit “will not compile as-is” warning means an owner cannot treat it like an official over-the-air update or a finished firmware download.
Whether a rebuilt version could run on a particular watch would depend on the model, its hardware, the replacement implementations for removed components, the resulting build and an installation method. The available information does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for rebuilt firmware, so claims that every old Pebble can run newly compiled software would be premature.

Does the Pebble phone app still matter?
Yes. Pebble watches run their own firmware and watch apps, but they do not have an internet connection of their own. The phone companion app maintains the Bluetooth connection and acts as the watch’s gateway to online services.
Functions documented by Core Devices’ public app repository
- Relaying phone notifications to the watch.
- Synchronizing time, weather, calendar, contacts and health data.
- Installing watch apps.
- Proxying network requests that the watch cannot make independently.
Core Devices’ public mobile-app repository says the app supports all Pebble watches. That is broad documented support, not a guarantee that every old watch, phone operating-system version, online service or feature will work in every setup. The repository also warns that its public copy is synchronized manually and may lag active internal development.

What is the difference between legacy Pebble support and new hardware?
Core Devices says it is making new Pebble watches and describes Pebble as an e-paper smartwatch. This is a separate hardware path from installing software on a watch released years ago. New-watch plans do not prove that a particular legacy model has received a firmware update.
| Question | Existing Pebble watch | New Core Devices hardware |
|---|---|---|
| What is being evaluated? | Condition, model, battery, phone compatibility and available firmware | Current product availability, specifications and support for the new model |
| How does the source release matter? | It may help community developers investigate builds and maintenance | It can provide a software foundation for successor devices and ecosystem work |
| Is availability established? | Depends on the watch already owned or found used | Core Devices describes new watches and links to a store; current stock, pricing, shipping and model specifications are not established here |
| Does it guarantee an update? | No | No; successor hardware is not evidence that a legacy watch has been updated |
How the Pebble ecosystem got here
Core Devices says the original Pebble launched on Kickstarter in 2012 and that more than 2 million watches were sold before Pebble’s intellectual property was sold to Fitbit in 2016. The sales figure is a Core Devices company-page claim; the page does not state a publication year for that figure.
The open-source release builds on an ecosystem that already included developer libraries, emulation work and tools aimed at Pebble devices. Those projects show that Pebble development has community infrastructure, but their presence does not establish that every project is actively maintained or works on every current platform.
What should an owner do now?
- Identify the exact watch model. Pebble, Pebble Time, Pebble 2 and Pebble 2 HR do not necessarily share identical hardware or component requirements.
- Check the physical condition. Battery health, screen condition, buttons and charging hardware may be more immediate limits than software.
- Confirm the companion-app path for your phone. The app is responsible for Bluetooth communication, synchronization and network access, so phone and service compatibility matters.
- Do not flash an unverified build. Public source code is not the same as a tested firmware image, and the repository is incomplete.
- Watch for project-specific compatibility notes. A future community build should identify supported models, required components, installation steps and recovery options before you attempt it.
What this release means for Pebble’s future
The immediate achievement is preservation: a central part of PebbleOS is no longer confined to a company-controlled repository. The longer-term opportunity is practical development—reconstructing omitted components, producing reproducible builds, maintaining the phone connection and adapting the platform for successor hardware.
For readers deciding whether to keep an old watch, the source release is encouraging but not decisive. The useful questions remain whether the specific device still works, whether its phone companion path is usable and whether a tested firmware or replacement watch is actually available.
