Google’s Fitbit Hardware Tease Led to the Fitbit Air—Here’s What Launched

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s October 2025 teaser about new Fitbit hardware for 2026 has a confirmed result: the company announced the Fitbit Air on May 7, 2026. It is a screenless fitness tracker, not a new Fitbit smartwatch. The announcement identifies one new device, so it does not confirm a broader lineup or replacements for the Charge, Sense, or Versa families.

What Google originally teased

On October 27, 2025, Droid Life reported that Google had indicated new Fitbit hardware would arrive in 2026. The statement offered no product name, images, specifications, price, launch date, or confirmation that several devices would launch together. It also did not promise a new Fitbit watch. Droid Life’s original report distinguished Fitbit-branded hardware from Google’s separate Pixel Watch line.

Google later announced Fitbit Air, but the official material cited here names no new Sense, Versa, Charge, or other Fitbit model. Fitbit Air is the confirmed answer to the teaser—not evidence that a multi-device family launched.

What Fitbit Air is—and what it tracks

Announced May 7, 2026, Fitbit Air is a small, screenless wearable intended for continuous, low-distraction health and activity tracking. You review data and coaching in the Google Health app on a compatible phone; it is not a smartwatch with an on-wrist screen experience. Google’s Fitbit Air announcement describes the device and its role in the Google Health ecosystem.

Google lists heart rate, steps, distance, calories, Active Zone Minutes, workouts, sleep duration and stages, Sleep Score, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygen, and skin-temperature variation. It also describes heart-rhythm monitoring and AFib alerts, subject to eligibility and regional availability. Cardio Load and Readiness features are available through Google Health.

These features are wellness tools, not medical diagnosis. Google says availability can depend on country, age, health status, and regulatory eligibility; accuracy may also be affected by physiology, movement, activity, and device placement. Fitbit Air is not intended for medical purposes. See Google’s product page and U.S. specifications for the listed functions and qualifications.

Phone compatibility

Google lists support for most phones running Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later. Setup requires a Google Account, the Google Health app, Bluetooth Low Energy, internet access, and location permission for syncing. Meeting those baseline requirements does not guarantee every feature: availability can depend on region, phone operating system, account status, age or health eligibility, subscription, and software changes. Google’s U.S. specifications list the requirements.

How Google Health and Health Coach fit in

Fitbit Air belongs to a broader software shift. Google announced that the Fitbit app is being repositioned as the Google Health app, with existing Fitbit users to be upgraded and Google Fit users expected to begin migrating later in 2026. The timing may vary by account and market, so the announcement does not mean every Fitbit user has already moved. Google says Google Health brings together wearable information and services including Health Connect and Apple Health, with medical-record integration also part of its announced plans. In Google’s May 2026 announcement, Google Health Premium started at $9.99 per month or $99 per year. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers were to receive Premium as part of those plans. Prices and included features may differ by market or subscription tier; consult Google’s announcement for the stated terms.

Fitbit Air or a smartwatch?

The choice is primarily about how you want to interact with your data. Fitbit Air trades an on-wrist display for a smaller, screenless tracker and phone-based review. Google positions it as a tracker rather than a smartwatch, so buyers seeking a watch face, apps, notifications, navigation, or other on-wrist interactions should look at a display-based device instead. Pixel Watch is Google’s smartwatch line; it is not the Fitbit-branded product announced in response to the teaser.

For Fitbit branding with a display, the Fitbit Charge 6 is a relevant conventional tracker alternative. For a full smartwatch experience, consider the Pixel Watch line. These are different product categories, so compare the current store listings against your needs rather than assuming Fitbit Air replaces either one.

Price, trial, and the cost beyond the tracker

For the United States, the standard Fitbit Air starts at $99.99; the Stephen Curry Special Edition is $129.99, and accessory bands start at $34.99. The Special Edition is distinguished by its styling and band, not by a separately announced sensor platform. The standard model became available for preorder on May 7, 2026; Google scheduled the Special Edition to reach U.S. shelves on May 26, 2026. Prices and availability elsewhere can differ. See Google’s U.S. store listing, the product announcement, and the Special Edition announcement.

Google’s stated U.S. offer includes a three-month Google Health Premium trial with Fitbit Air. Under the announced terms, it is for new and returning users, limited to one trial per customer, requires a valid payment method, and automatically renews at $9.99 per month after the trial unless canceled. Google Fitbit Inspire 3 - Midnight Zen/Black - Small and Large Bands
  • Inspire 3 is the tracker that helps you find your energy, do what you love and feel your best – all you have to do is wear it;
  • Compatible with Apple iOS 16.4 or higher and Android OS 11.0 or higher
  • Move more: Stay motivated with a Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes, automatic exercise tracking, and reminders to move
  • Stress less: Keep an eye on your well-being with a daily Stress Management Score, mindfulness sessions, relax breathing sessions, irregular heart rhythm notifications, SpO2, menstrual health tracking, resting heart rate, and more[1,2]
  • Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]

Basic tracking comes with the device and Google Health, while Health Coach and some enhanced services are associated with Premium. If you want only straightforward tracking, the subscription is not the same as the hardware price and should be treated as optional ongoing cost. Google also says standard Fitbit Air models became HSA/FSA eligible for qualifying U.S. customers on June 15, 2026; Special Editions were not currently eligible in that announcement. Eligibility depends on the customer and purchase. See Google’s HSA/FSA eligibility details.

Who should consider Fitbit Air?

  • Consider it if you want a lightweight, screen-free tracker for sleep, activity, and heart-rate trends, and are comfortable checking a phone for information.
  • Choose a display-based tracker or smartwatch if you want information on your wrist, apps, or smartwatch-style interaction.
  • Factor in Premium separately if Health Coach is a key reason to buy; the hardware price does not make the subscription permanent or compulsory.
  • Check local eligibility and compatibility if you rely on a particular health feature, use an older phone, or live outside the United States.
  • Do not buy it as a medical monitor; Google describes it as a wellness product and limits some health functions by eligibility and region.

The screenless design is both the point and the trade-off: it can suit unobtrusive, overnight wear, but it means less immediate feedback than a watch with a display. Whether that is an advantage depends on how often you want to check your stats.
