Which case is more likely to suit your wrist?
Hamilton: exact 38 mm case measurements
Hamilton lists this Murph at 38 mm across and 11.1 mm thick, with a 20 mm lug width. Those exact reference-specific measurements make it the clearer choice if you are shopping for a compact case or need a confirmed strap width. They do not, by themselves, establish how the watch will sit on every wrist; case shape and lug reach matter too.
Seiko: avoid assuming SPB210 measurements apply
Seiko’s announcement gives 40.0 mm diameter and 12.0 mm height in its Alpinist family listing, but the cited material does not confirm those dimensions as exact SPB121J1 measurements. A separate Seiko specification page is for SPB210J1, not SPB121J1, so its measurements—including lug-to-lug length and lug distance—cannot be used to predict the SPB121’s fit. If fit is decisive, try the exact SPB121J1 on or obtain its official model-specific dimensions before buying.
Do you want a clean dial or extra information?
Murph: time first, without a date window
The Murph H70405730 presents hours, minutes and seconds on a black dial. Hamilton’s product page describes the hands as vintage-style and beige, with Super-LumiNova. With no date window listed for this reference, the dial stays visually simpler than the Alpinist’s. Hamilton describes the H-10 caliber generally as available with or without a date; that movement-level description does not change this Murph’s no-date configuration.

Alpinist: date and compass ring
Seiko’s family announcement describes SPB121J1 as part of the Alpinist line, with a date and bidirectionally rotating internal compass ring. Its green dial and gold-accented markers make for a more distinctive, visually busy presentation; Seiko also describes a magnifier over the date. The ring offers a compass-style reference, but it should not be confused with a standalone navigation tool.
What do the reserve and water-resistance figures mean?
Power reserve
Hamilton specifies an 80-hour reserve for the Murph’s H-10. Seiko’s Alpinist announcement associates the SPB121J1 with the 6R35 and approximately 70 hours. These are the brands’ stated figures, not a head-to-head independent test. Both are automatic watches, and actual reserve depends on the movement being sufficiently wound.

Water resistance
Hamilton rates H70405730 at 10 bar/100 m; Seiko’s announcement gives 20 bar for the Alpinist family model. The higher stated rating is a specification difference, not a blanket guarantee for every water activity or condition. Follow the manufacturer’s care guidance and have seals checked as appropriate; the available evidence does not justify calling the Alpinist a dive watch.

Seiko traces the Alpinist line to the 1959 Seiko Laurel Alpinist, which the brand says was intended for mountain climbers and recreational field-sports enthusiasts. Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Murph 38 if you want a restrained black dial, no date display, a confirmed 38 mm case and 20 mm lug width, and the longer stated reserve.
- Choose the Alpinist SPB121J1 if the green-and-gold look, date magnifier and internal compass ring are the features you will actually use, and you prefer its higher stated water-resistance figure.
- Pause and verify before buying if exact Alpinist fit, strap replacement, or value is your deciding factor: the cited announcement does not establish all SPB121J1 dimensions or strap sizing, and current prices need to be compared in the same market.
