The Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02 Selfwinding turns a rare 1960 asymmetrical watch into a much larger modern limited edition: the original 27.5 mm yellow-gold 5159BA was produced in seven units, while the 2024 [RE]Master02 measures 41 mm, uses the brand’s 18-carat sand gold and has a stated run of 250 pieces. Its angular case, segmented blue dial and date-free automatic Calibre 7129 make it a reinterpretation rather than a replica.
What the [RE]Master02 is—and what it reinterprets
The [RE]Master02 Selfwinding is Audemars Piguet’s contemporary take on the 5159BA, an asymmetrical rectangular watch the manufacture launched in 1960. According to the brand’s heritage account, the 5159BA was 27.5 mm wide, made in 18-carat yellow gold and produced in seven units; Audemars Piguet says one is displayed at the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet. The modern watch’s reference is 15240SG.OO.A347CR.01.
The connection is part of a broader period of experimentation. Audemars Piguet says it created more than 30 asymmetrical models between 1959 and 1963, most in runs of fewer than 10. That figure appears on the brand’s current product page and is attributed to Sébastian Vivas, Heritage and Museum Director. The seven-piece count for the 5159BA comes from the manufacture’s 31 May 2024 heritage article.
| Detail | 5159BA, 1960 | [RE]Master02, 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Case width | 27.5 mm, according to Audemars Piguet’s 2024 heritage article | 41 mm, according to the 2024 technical specifications published by Monochrome Watches |
| Case material | 18-carat yellow gold, according to Audemars Piguet’s 2024 heritage article | 18-carat sand gold, according to Audemars Piguet’s current product page |
| Stated production | Seven units, according to Audemars Piguet’s 2024 heritage article | 250 pieces, according to Audemars Piguet’s current product page |
| Movement | Not stated in the cited 2024 heritage article | Automatic Calibre 7129, displaying hours and minutes, according to Audemars Piguet’s 2024 heritage article |
The contrast in scale is the clearest sign that this is not a dimension-for-dimension reproduction. At 41 mm, the new watch takes the original’s unusual outline into a far more substantial wrist presence while preserving asymmetry as its defining idea.

Case shape, finishing and wrist presence
Monochrome describes the modern case as a composition of straight, angular lines, a faceted crystal, satin finishing and polished accents. The combination gives the watch the architectural character behind the Brutalist description, while the asymmetric shape makes its silhouette distinctive even before the dial comes into view. Monochrome calls the design polarizing and advises seeing it in person; that is the publication’s assessment, not a universal reaction.
Monochrome’s 2024 listing gives the case dimensions as 41 mm wide and 9.7 mm thick, with water resistance rated to 30 m. These are published launch specifications, not a guarantee about the condition or water resistance of any individual watch. The listed strap is blue alligator leather with an 18-carat sand-gold pin buckle.

Sand gold and the segmented blue dial
Audemars Piguet says the case is made entirely from 18-carat sand gold, an alloy of gold, copper and palladium. The manufacturer describes its color as shifting between white-gold and pink-gold tones depending on the light and movement of the wearer’s wrist. That changing appearance is a material description from the brand, rather than a claim that every example will look identical in every setting.
The dial is named “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50.” Audemars Piguet describes it as twelve individually machined brass triangles, linearly satin-finished and mounted on a brass plate with small feet. Sand-gold partitions separate the segments and, according to the brand, help with time reading. Monochrome additionally reports that the blue inserts are PVD-treated.

What Calibre 7129 adds
The [RE]Master02 uses Audemars Piguet automatic Calibre 7129, an extra-thin movement that displays hours and minutes. Monochrome reports that it is derived from Calibre 7121, with the date mechanism removed, and lists a thickness of 2.8 mm. The publication’s technical listing also gives a diameter of 29.6 mm, 211 parts, 31 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 52-hour power reserve.
Removing the date keeps the display focused on the two functions the dial needs. The slim movement is also consistent with the watch’s 9.7 mm overall thickness reported by Monochrome, though that figure is a case specification and should not be confused with movement thickness.

Who the [RE]Master02 is for
The watch’s appeal rests on a specific combination: an unusual historical reference, a conspicuously enlarged asymmetrical case, a distinctive alloy and a dial assembled from separate geometric segments. It is a considered choice for someone drawn to the form and its historical connection, rather than for someone seeking a close physical copy of the 27.5 mm original. The limited run of 250 pieces is the manufacturer’s stated edition size, but by itself says nothing about present availability or market value.
