It combines a 200 m-rated dive watch, the independently adjustable 6R54 GMT hand, an ice-blue textured dial and a 4,000-piece production run. Its strongest reasons to buy are the distinctive Save the Ocean design, long power reserve and substantial but comparatively manageable case. The important qualification is that it is a caller GMT: the GMT hand jumps independently, not the local hour hand.
What makes the SPB385 significant?
Seiko introduced the SPB381, SPB383 and SPB385 in 2023 as the Prospex diver collection’s first mechanical GMT watches. All three reinterpret Seiko’s 1968 professional diver. The SPB385 is the Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Prospex Save the Ocean Limited Edition, rather than a regular-collection reference.
Its identity comes from an ice-blue dial with a fine striated texture. Seiko describes the color and texture as creating “a unique depth.” The watch is limited to 4,000 pieces, and the case back and dial carry the Save the Ocean and anniversary treatment associated with that edition.
How the 6R54 GMT works
It is a caller GMT
The automatic 6R54 has a 24-hour GMT hand that can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments. The conventional local hour hand is not the independently jumping hand. That makes the SPB385 a caller GMT: it is well suited to tracking a second time zone while you remain in your home time zone, but it is less convenient for frequent travel than a “flyer” GMT that jumps the local hour hand.

Movement and reserve
- Caliber: Seiko 6R54 automatic

The three-day reserve is useful if the watch is taken off for a weekend, although the movement’s GMT architecture—not a quick-set local-hour function—is the key usability distinction.
Case, diving hardware and dimensions
| Specification | SPB385 |
|---|---|
| Case material | Stainless steel with Seiko’s super-hard coating |
| Diameter | 42.0 mm |
| Thickness | 12.9 mm |
| Lug to lug | 48.6 mm |
| Lug width | 20 mm |
| Water resistance | 200 m diver’s water resistance |

The 42 mm diameter and 48.6 mm lug-to-lug length give it a purposeful presence without reaching the dimensions of Seiko’s largest historical Prospex divers. At 12.9 mm, it remains a substantial mechanical diver, particularly when paired with the supplied NATO strap.

How it wears
In Fratello’s July 2023 hands-on report, Jorg Weppelink said the 42 mm case looked and wore very well. He also found the bracelet more comfortable than expected, while considering the clasp an area that could be improved. Those are reviewer impressions, not laboratory measurements.
The supplied stainless-steel bracelet uses a three-fold clasp with a secure lock, push-button release and diver extension. The additional strap is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles using Seiko’s Japanese Seichu braiding technique. A thick double-pass NATO raises the watch on the wrist and makes it wear noticeably taller than the bracelet does.

The premium therefore buys the limited-edition dial and treatment, the extra NATO strap and scarcity—not a different GMT mechanism or a higher stated water-resistance rating.
Price and availability
Seiko’s March 2023 announcement said the series would reach select retailers from June and July 2023. It listed a recommended European price of $1,700 for the SPB385, with a warning that specifications and prices could change. Fratello reported €1,900 for the limited edition in July 2023. Who should buy the SPB385?
Choose it if you want
- A mechanical diver with a genuine independently adjustable second-time-zone hand.
- A 72-hour power reserve and 200 m water resistance.
- The ice-blue, textured Save the Ocean design rather than a conventional black or green dial.
- A limited-edition Prospex with both bracelet and recycled-polyester NATO options.
Think twice if you need
- A flyer GMT for rapidly changing local time while traveling.
- A thin, dressy watch; the case and double-pass NATO are deliberately substantial.
- A guaranteed bargain compared with the regular SPB381 or SPB383.
Verdict
The SPB385 is a compelling first-generation Prospex diver GMT when its specific character matters to you. The 6R54 supplies a useful 72-hour reserve and independent GMT adjustment, while the sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and 200 m rating preserve the practical diver brief. Its extra cost over the regular references is chiefly the ice-blue limited-edition execution, 4,000-piece scarcity and additional strap. The decisive caveat is the caller-GMT layout: frequent travelers may prefer a flyer GMT, but home-time-zone users who value the design will find the SPB385 unusually distinctive.
