Health Connect Comes to Android Health and Fitness Apps: What Google’s 2022 Integration Means Now

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s November 14, 2022 announcement brought Health Connect support to more than a dozen Android health and fitness apps, including Fitbit, Google Fit, MyFitnessPal, Peloton, Oura, WeightWatchers, Lifesum, Flo and Samsung Health. Health Connect is not a new fitness dashboard or a cloud replacement for those services. It is an Android interoperability layer: compatible apps can write approved health records to a common, primarily on-device store, and other compatible apps can read them after you grant permission.

The platform has since become part of Android 14 and Google’s recommended destination as Google Fit APIs approach deprecation in 2026. Whether it helps you depends on the exact apps, data types and directions of synchronization they support.

What Health Connect actually does

Health Connect provides a common Android data model, storage layer and permission screen for health records. A wearable or phone sensor records information in its source app; that app writes selected records to Health Connect; a second app reads those records after you approve access.

Typical records include steps, distance, calories, heart rate, exercise sessions and routes, sleep, weight and other body measurements, nutrition, hydration, menstruation, blood-glucose or blood-pressure-related records where supported, skin temperature and medical-record categories documented by Google. The authoritative catalog is Google’s Health Connect data-types documentation, because availability varies by Android, SDK-extension, app and device.

Health Connect coordinates access; it does not dictate how an app interprets, displays, synchronizes or retains the data. You normally continue viewing insights in Fitbit, Samsung Health, Oura, Peloton, MyFitnessPal or another compatible app.

The problem it was designed to solve

Without a common layer, a user combining a Galaxy Watch, Peloton workouts, Oura sleep data, MyFitnessPal nutrition and a smart-scale app faces separate accounts and one-off integrations. Developers likewise had to build many vendor-to-vendor connections.

Health Connect offers one Android interface and shared record types. A Peloton workout could, for example, be made available to Oura, MyFitnessPal, WeightWatchers or Lifesum when each app implemented the relevant write or read side and the user consented. That reduces integration work, but it does not remove proprietary device features or guarantee that every app supports every record.

What the 2022 launch list means today

Google’s launch announcement described more than a dozen supporting apps, with Fitbit, Google Fit, MyFitnessPal, Peloton, Oura, WeightWatchers, Lifesum, Flo and Samsung Health among the named examples (Thurrott’s November 2022 report). Treat that as a historical snapshot, not a permanent compatibility directory. Apps can add or remove data types, change read/write direction, limit features by region or subscription, or stop supporting a connection.

Before relying on a workflow, check both apps’ current Health Connect documentation and the exact data type you need.

How data flows

A useful model is:

Wearable or phone sensor → source app → Health Connect (write, with consent) → destination app (read, with consent)

You can set drinking Water Reminders and Sedentary Reminders to establish a healthy way of working.

Some apps read and write; others only do one. A destination might read steps but not sleep, or a source might write workouts but not heart rate. Two apps can also record the same activity, creating duplicate or competing records rather than one perfectly reconciled total.

Privacy and permissions

Health Connect separates permissions by app and data type. Read access and write access are distinct, and an app should request only what its user-facing feature needs. You can revoke access later, and Google’s guidance requires apps to explain their requested data and provide controls to pause or manage synchronization (Google’s permissions guidance).

The Health Connect store is designed around on-device control, but that does not make synchronized data permanently local. Once an app reads a record, it may copy it to its own cloud account for backup, analytics, coaching or multi-device features. Revoking Health Connect permission stops future access; it does not necessarily erase copies already held by that provider. Deletion and retention are governed separately by each app’s privacy policy.

Setting it up on current Android phones

Android 14 and later

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Security & Privacy, then Privacy or Privacy controls.
  3. Select Health Connect. Menu names and nesting vary by manufacturer; searching Settings for “Health Connect” is often fastest.
  4. Open App permissions, choose the first app and allow only the required read or write data types.
  5. Repeat for the other app, then enable any separate Health Connect or synchronization switch inside each app.

On Android 14, Health Connect is an Android system component rather than a separately installed APK. Google documents the transition in its Android 13-to-14 migration guide.

Android 13 and earlier

  1. Install or update Health Connect from Google Play if it is not present.
  2. Open it through Settings → Apps → Health Connect or the available shortcut.
  3. Choose App permissions, select an app and enable the needed read or write permissions.
  4. Turn on synchronization inside the app itself if it has a separate control.

Health Connect requires Android 9/API level 28 or later and Google Play services on supported devices. The SDK can support Android 8/API 26 for development, but end users on Android 8 cannot use the Health Connect app. Work profiles are not supported for usable Health Connect API access. See Google’s availability requirements.

If records do not appear

  1. Confirm both apps are listed in Health Connect.
  2. Check that the source app has write permission and the destination has read permission.
  3. Verify the exact type—steps, exercise sessions, sleep or another category—is enabled.
  4. Look for an in-app synchronization toggle and confirm the source has finished recording or uploading.
  5. Check date ranges. Ordinary read permission does not automatically expose unlimited history or background access; older-than-30-day and background reads require additional permissions (data-type and access documentation).
  6. Look for duplicate records or a proprietary metric that the destination app cannot interpret.
  7. Check manufacturer, region, account-tier and work-profile restrictions before revoking and re-granting permissions.

Deleting an app revokes its Health Connect permissions, but records it previously copied elsewhere require separate deletion requests under that provider’s policy.

What Health Connect cannot promise

  • Universal compatibility: installing Health Connect does not make an unsupported app compatible.
  • Automatic two-way sync: support may be one-way or limited to selected data types.
  • Perfect deduplication: multiple watches, phones and apps can write overlapping steps, workouts, calories or weight entries.
  • Complete migration: proprietary scores, coaching models, firmware data, subscriptions and cloud histories may remain locked to the original vendor. Historical reads are separately permissioned and app-dependent.
  • Cross-platform portability: Health Connect is Android-focused and does not make these records available to iPhone apps.
  • Cloud backup: its on-device design is not a universal replacement for each service’s account backup and export tools when changing phones.
  • Identical calculations: two apps may classify the same workout or calories differently even when they use the same standardized record type.

Android 14, step counting and other platform details

On Android 14/API 34 with SDK Extension 20 or later, Health Connect can provide on-device step counting. Google’s June 2026 documentation notes a change in how those steps are attributed internally. Developers that filter by data origin should review that change; apps aggregating without origin filters may automatically include the on-device records (raw-data documentation).

What developers need to build

A production integration normally includes:

  • The AndroidX Health Connect client library.
  • Manifest declarations for the specific read and write permissions.
  • Runtime permission requests and handling for denial, revocation and partial grants.
  • A check that Health Connect is available on the device.
  • Privacy-policy, rationale and user-control flows.
  • Google Play Console health-data declarations before release.

The dependency pattern is documented at Get started with Health Connect. Documentation can show different library release tracks—for example, an alpha getting-started build and a stable Jetpack line—so use the current AndroidX release information rather than copying a version number from an older article. Play publication requirements are detailed in Google’s health-app publishing guidance.

How Google Fit fits into the transition

Health Connect is not a drop-in clone of Google Fit. Google Fit historically combined user-facing activity experiences with APIs, while Health Connect is primarily a permissioned, device-centric interoperability layer. Google ended new Google Fit API sign-ups on May 1, 2024 and says the Google Fit APIs, including the REST API, are deprecated in 2026. Developers are directed toward Health Connect or other Android Health APIs (Google Fit migration guidance).

A Fitbit Web API integration is a different model again: account-centric and cloud-based rather than Health Connect’s primarily on-device exchange. Migrating from Fit therefore involves new data models, permissions and user flows, not merely changing an endpoint.

Who benefits most

  • Multi-app Android users: people combining a Galaxy or Pixel wearable with separate nutrition, sleep, training or scale apps.
  • Developers: teams that want one standard Android integration instead of many direct vendor connections.
  • Privacy-conscious users: those who want granular, app-by-app control over shared records.

It is less useful if your watch and health service already meet all your needs inside one ecosystem, or if the metric you care about is proprietary and unavailable through Health Connect.

Bottom line

Health Connect made Android health data less siloed, but it is an interoperability mechanism—not a universal dashboard, automatic migration tool or guarantee of identical results. Confirm that both apps support the precise data type and direction you need, configure permissions on your Android version, and remember that vendor cloud copies and proprietary features remain outside Health Connect’s control. For developers, its strategic importance grows as Google Fit APIs move toward deprecation; for buyers, Health Connect should be treated as a useful compatibility feature, not a reason by itself to choose a particular watch or subscription.
