The MoonSwatch 1965 SO33M106 is my favourite OMEGA x Swatch collaboration because its restrained grey-and-white design carries a precise piece of Speedmaster history without pretending to be the instrument that made that history. The 19/65 counters, black tachymeter bezel, blue ultraviolet details and Moon battery-cover graphic give this quartz Bioceramic chronograph a stronger story than most colour-led MoonSwatches.
What the MoonSwatch 1965 is
MOONSWATCH 1965 is a non-limited quartz chronograph in Swatch’s OMEGA X Swatch collection. Its reference is SO33M106. Swatch lists an original retail price of $285; availability and selling prices can change, and the official listing showed the model sold out with a reseller listing when checked.
The case, crown, pushers, Velcro strap and strap loop are grey Bioceramic. The watch has a white dial and a black Bioceramic bezel printed with a white tachymeter scale. It uses the collection’s OMEGA X Swatch, Speedmaster and MoonSwatch branding, with bio-sourced glass over the dial.

The 42 mm diameter is substantial, but the 47.80 mm lug-to-lug measurement is the more useful figure for judging how far the watch spans your wrist. The 3 Bar rating is limited water resistance, so this is not a swimming or diving watch.

What “1965” means
“1965” refers to 1 March 1965, the date on which NASA qualified the original OMEGA Speedmaster for all manned space missions and extravehicular activity. Swatch’s account says NASA’s selection process involved 11 successive trials designed to find a reliable, precise, readable and easy-to-use watch. OMEGA’s historical account describes near-destructive testing of chronographs from four brands and says only the Speedmaster survived.
OMEGA reproduces the qualification wording as Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions.
That statement belongs to the original mechanical Speedmaster. The MoonSwatch 1965 commemorates the breakthrough; it is not itself a NASA-qualified flight instrument.
The details that make this MoonSwatch special
The 19 and 65 counters
The 10 o’clock counter places 19 at the top, while the 2 o’clock counter displays 65. Swatch describes the treatment as calibrated to total 19 hours and 65 minutes, turning the model number into something you can read on the dial rather than a name printed only on the box.

Ultraviolet numerals
Under ultraviolet light, the 19, 65 and 60 markings glow blue. It is a small, conditional feature rather than an always-visible colour accent, which suits the watch’s commemorative purpose: the reference reveals itself when you look for it.

A Moon image appears on the battery cover. That hidden-facing detail reinforces the lunar theme without crowding the otherwise monochrome dial.
A deliberately restrained palette
Grey Bioceramic, a white dial and a black bezel give this model a closer visual relationship to the utilitarian Speedmaster than the brighter planetary colourways. The restraint also makes the tachymeter scale and sub-dials easier to read at a glance.

How the 1965 relates to the Speedmaster
The connection is historical and visual, not a claim of equivalent construction. OMEGA records that the Speedmaster officially launched with Gemini 3 on 23 March 1965, accompanied Edward White on America’s first spacewalk and became the first watch worn on the Moon in July 1969.
The quartz MoonSwatch borrows that design language and marks the NASA qualification date. It does not turn a quartz Swatch into the flight-qualified OMEGA tool. Choosing between them therefore depends on what you want the watch to do emotionally and mechanically.

Why it is my favourite OMEGA x Swatch collaboration
It has a specific story
Many collaborations can be reduced to a colour or a graphic. The 1965 has a date with a clear meaning, a documented qualification process and a dial treatment that encodes the date in 19 and 65. The design is decorative, but the decoration is doing historical work.
It stays wearable
The monochrome case, dial and bezel avoid the loudest interpretations of the collection. The watch still looks recognisably like a MoonSwatch, yet it can sit comfortably with casual clothes and with other grey, white or black accessories.
It balances novelty and legibility
The UV numerals and Moon battery cover reward curiosity, while the white dial, black scale and conventional chronograph layout remain visually straightforward in normal light.

Use the full identification phrase MoonSwatch 1965 SO33M106 watch when checking listings. Swatch’s original listed retail price was $285, but stock and secondary-market prices are volatile. Confirm the current status on Swatch’s official product page and check that a listing identifies SO33M106 rather than a similarly coloured MoonSwatch.

Is it worth buying over an OMEGA Speedmaster?
Buy the MoonSwatch 1965 if you want the Speedmaster silhouette, the 1965 NASA story and the collection’s playful details in a light quartz watch at Swatch’s original $285 retail price. Choose an OMEGA Speedmaster if the mechanical movement, traditional construction, servicing relationship and direct instrument heritage are the reason you are buying.
They answer different questions. The MoonSwatch asks whether you want to wear a clever, accessible tribute. The OMEGA asks whether you want to own the watchmaking object that carries the original provenance.
