The Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96 was introduced in 1932 as the company’s first watch model with a reference number. Its launch specification included a manually wound calibre 12-120, but the Ref. 96 was produced in multiple configurations over the decades that followed. The 96D, introduced in 1934, added a Clous de Paris bezel.
When was the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 96 made?
Patek Philippe dates the Ref. 96’s launch to 1932 and describes it as the first Patek Philippe model to carry a reference number. The company’s account of its launch is available in its Calatrava history. Phillips describes the Ref. 96 as the company’s first serially produced referenced timepiece and dates its production from 1932 to 1973, a span of more than 40 years.
The watch’s importance is partly in how it established a lasting design vocabulary: Patek Philippe calls its sleek form an archetype of the classic round wristwatch. That legacy does not mean the Ref. 96 stayed identical throughout its production. Museum and auction records document changes in movement, seconds display, dial, hands, and case details.
What movement is in a vintage Patek Philippe Ref. 96?
Patek Philippe identifies manually wound calibre 12-120 as the Ref. 96’s launch movement. That is a launch specification, not a guarantee that every Ref. 96 contains the same calibre. For example, the Patek Philippe Museum catalogue records a yellow-gold Ref. 96 dated 1955–1956 with calibre 12-400; its catalogue also includes a platinum example dated 1951–1952 with calibre 12-120. See the museum’s collection catalogue.

Thierry Stern, Patek Philippe’s president, described the appeal of winding a mechanical watch by hand: “There is something special about a hand-wound caliber…you turn the crown and you give life to your watch”. The comment appeared in the brand’s 2021 Calatrava feature.
What is the difference between the Ref. 96 and 96D?
Patek Philippe introduced the Ref. 96D in 1934; the “D” stands for decor. The maker says it retained the Ref. 96’s calibre 12-120, applied hour markers, and slightly curved lugs, while adding a guilloched Clous de Paris bezel. The bezel is the defining distinction documented in the company’s account. It should not be taken to mean every other detail of every Ref. 96D specimen is identical.

How can you distinguish Ref. 96 seconds and dial variants?
Reference 96 examples are not limited to one dial layout. Phillips catalogue records include watches with center seconds, subsidiary seconds at six o’clock, and no-seconds versions. Dials and hands also vary, so the reference number alone does not identify a particular configuration.
When comparing two examples, keep the observed details separate rather than treating one configuration as the definitive Ref. 96:

These are useful comparison points, not a universal authentication checklist. A reference number by itself does not establish a specific watch’s authenticity, originality, or market value; consult qualified specialists when assessing an individual example.
How large is the Ref. 96?
Published diameter figures differ slightly depending on the source and specimen. Patek Philippe gives 30.5 mm as the Ref. 96 figure in its historical comparison; the Patek Philippe Museum catalogue lists 30.6 mm for each of two documented examples: a platinum watch dated 1951–1952 and a yellow-gold watch dated 1955–1956. These are published reference and specimen measurements, not evidence that every Ref. 96 has precisely the same diameter.

How did the Ref. 96 influence later Calatravas?
Patek Philippe identifies the Ref. 96 as an ancestor of later Calatrava design, while distinguishing inspiration from direct duplication. In its 2021 account, the company says the Ref. 6119’s applied faceted obus markers refer back to the 1932 Ref. 96, and that the later model’s curved lugs draw inspiration from the Ref. 96 and Ref. 3796. The official chronology also says the 2004 Ref. 5196 paired calibre 215 PS with a case and dial inspired by the Ref. 96. Those relationships are described in Patek Philippe’s Calatrava feature and chronology.
