On a working Gear S2, open Settings → Gear info → Reset Gear → Factory reset, then tap Done. This erases data stored on the watch and returns it to factory settings. Back up anything important first, because setup and phone pairing are required again afterward.
What a Gear S2 factory reset erases
A factory reset restores default settings and deletes data stored on the Gear S2, including installed or downloaded content, personal settings and customizations. It does not factory-reset the connected phone or erase copies of information already synced elsewhere. Data that existed only on the watch may be unrecoverable.
The Gear S2 manual distinguishes this from a light reset: a light reset can preserve media files and personal data, while a factory reset removes all watch data. See the Gear S2 Classic manual.
Before resetting
- Charge the watch or place it on its compatible wireless charging dock. A reset cannot be completed if the watch cannot boot.
- Back up while the watch still connects. In the original phone app, use Samsung Gear → Settings → Back up and restore → Back up data. Current app labels can differ.
- Confirm that important settings, photos, music and health information have synced. A reset cannot restore data that was never backed up.
- Keep the Samsung account credentials associated with the watch available, particularly if recovery mode is needed.
- If the watch has LTE service, be prepared to reactivate the cellular plan through the carrier after setup.

Factory-reset the Gear S2 from the watch
- Wake the Gear S2 and open Settings.
- Swipe to and tap Gear info.
- Tap Reset Gear.
- Choose Factory reset.
- Review the warning and tap Done to confirm.
- Wait while the watch erases its contents and restarts. Do not interrupt it during this process.
- When the welcome screen appears, complete setup and pair it with a compatible phone.
This is Samsung’s documented Gear S2 path: Settings → Gear info → Reset Gear → Factory reset → Done. Wording can vary with model, carrier and software revision; if you see About Gear instead of Gear info, verify that the device is actually a Gear S2.
Reset from the companion phone app
The original documentation calls the companion application Samsung Gear; newer Samsung phones use Galaxy Wearable. If the Gear S2 remains connected and the app exposes a reset control, the current Samsung-style route is generally Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → General → Reset → Reset. Some versions omit Watch settings.

Do not assume this option works on every phone in 2026. Samsung says Gear S2 compatibility depends on phone, Android version, region, carrier and app availability; Gear S2 models are listed as unsupported on Samsung Galaxy phones released with Android 14, including the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy A25 and Galaxy A15. Check Samsung’s compatibility guidance before relying on app-based setup. If the app cannot connect, use the watch’s own Settings menu instead.
If the Gear S2 is frozen
Try a restart before erasing anything. Press and hold the Home/Power key for more than seven seconds, then release it when the watch restarts. This is only a restart; it preserves data and is not a factory reset. Once the watch boots normally, follow the Settings path above. If you forgot the screen-lock PIN
Samsung’s general smartwatch recovery procedure may provide a way to reset a locked watch, but its current instructions cover multiple generations and do not confirm identical button behavior for every Gear S2 variant:
- Turn the watch off.
- Press and hold Home/Power and Back together until Rebooting appears.
- Quickly press the Home key repeatedly to open the reboot menu.
- Continue pressing Home until Recovery is selected.
- Press and hold Home to start recovery.
- Follow any on-screen factory-reset instructions.
Use this as a model-dependent recovery option, not a guaranteed Gear S2 sequence. If the menu never appears, stop forcing button combinations and contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider. Samsung warns that the same Samsung account associated with the watch may be required after a recovery reset; recovery does not bypass account security. See Samsung’s recovery guidance.

After the reset: selling, giving away or pairing again
- On the old phone, open Bluetooth settings, select the Gear S2 and choose Unpair or Forget this device.
- Remove the watch from any Samsung wearable-device or account list that still shows it.
- Give the new owner the correct Gear S2 charging dock.
- The new owner should install the appropriate compatible companion app and complete pairing from the beginning.
- For an LTE model, arrange carrier reactivation if the cellular plan is still active.
Unpairing is separate from erasing the watch. A used watch that still requests the previous owner’s account requires that owner to remove it properly; do not attempt to bypass verification. Samsung’s manual also discusses account and reactivation behavior: Gear S2 user manual.

The reset menu is missing
- Confirm the model is a Gear S2, not Gear S, Gear S3, Gear Sport or a Galaxy Watch.
- Allow the watch to finish booting, then look under Gear info, not only About Gear.
- Menu names may differ by software revision or carrier.
The watch restarts but does not erase
Holding Home/Power for more than seven seconds performs a restart only. Use Settings → Gear info → Reset Gear → Factory reset for a data-erasing reset.

The app cannot find the watch or pairing fails
- Remove the old Bluetooth pairing before attempting a new one.
- Enable Bluetooth, keep the devices close and restart both.
- Verify that the phone and Android version support Gear S2. Samsung’s compatibility limits, including Android 14 Galaxy exclusions, are listed at Samsung Support.
- Use the correct Samsung Gear or supported Galaxy Wearable installation for the phone.
A used watch asks for the previous owner
The seller must remove the watch from their account and complete an owner-authorized reset. If verification remains, contact Samsung or the seller rather than trying to circumvent it.
LTE stopped working
An LTE Gear S2 may need carrier reactivation after a reset. Contact the carrier that provides the watch’s service.
The watch will not charge or boot
Check that the dock is the correct model-specific accessory and that its power connection works. Samsung notes that charging docks are model-dependent at Samsung’s charging guide. A reset cannot repair a worn battery, damaged charging coil, screen or dock.
When replacement is more practical
The Gear S2 is an older Tizen-era watch with restricted compatibility on current phones. If your phone is excluded, the battery or charger is failing, or Samsung support cannot resolve account and pairing problems, compare the cost of service with a newer watch. These are suggested prices from that December 2025 sheet, not guaranteed August 2026 retail prices: Samsung MSRP PDF. Newer Galaxy Watches use Wear OS rather than the Gear S2’s Tizen software, so they are replacements, not interchangeable software upgrades.
