Yes—a child can use an Apple Watch without owning an iPhone. An adult must set it up and manage it from their iPhone with Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup). For the current watchOS 26 setup, use a cellular-capable Apple Watch SE or Series 6 or later, the child’s own Apple Account in Family Sharing, and a carrier that supports the family-watch service. A cellular plan is optional for initial setup but normally essential for dependable calls, messages, and location when the child is away from Wi-Fi and the managing iPhone.
Apple’s watchOS 26 guide is the current buying and setup reference.
What you need before starting
- An adult’s iPhone with current compatible software, an Apple Account, and two-factor authentication enabled.
- The adult must be the Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- The child’s separate Apple Account, added to the adult’s Family Sharing group. Do not share the adult’s account.
- A cellular-capable Apple Watch SE or Series 6 or later that supports the watchOS version you will install.
- A carrier that explicitly supports Apple Watch For Your Kids in the child’s region. Corporate, enterprise, prepaid, and some MVNO plans may be excluded.
- The child’s date of birth, emergency contacts, Medical ID details, Wi-Fi password, and a plan for charging the watch.
Apple’s general support article still lists older historical minimums such as Series 4 or later and iPhone 6s with iOS 14. For a purchase or update in 2026, follow the newer watchOS 26 model guidance and verify compatibility for the exact iPhone, watch, and software versions.

Does the watch need cellular service?
There are three different answers:
- To start pairing: not necessarily.
- For reliable standalone communication and location: usually yes. Without cellular, the watch depends on known Wi-Fi or proximity to the managing iPhone.
- For every feature: availability varies by carrier, region, Wi-Fi, permissions, battery, and the feature itself.
During setup, you can choose Not Now and finish over Wi-Fi, then arrange service separately. Ask the carrier specifically about Apple Watch For Your Kids, not merely ordinary Apple Watch activation. The child’s watch may use a different carrier from the adult’s iPhone, but that carrier must support the family-watch feature. Check Apple’s carrier information at apple.com/watch/cellular.

Check the watch before pairing
New watch
A current cellular Apple Watch SE is the value-oriented choice. Apple’s U.S. feature page lists Apple Watch SE 3 from $249 at the time of publication; confirm the current price on Apple’s SE buying page. Do not pay extra for health functions that child setup disables.
Used or refurbished watch
- Confirm it is a cellular model, not GPS-only.
- Check the exact generation, regional cellular bands, battery condition, and watchOS compatibility.
- Require the seller to erase it and remove Activation Lock from their Apple Account and Find My.
- If an Activation Lock screen remains, only the previous owner can normally remove it.
A GPS-only watch cannot be upgraded into a cellular family-watch device.
Set up Apple Watch For Your Kids step by step
- Erase a previously used watch. It must contain no previous content and have no Activation Lock.
- Open Apple Watch on the adult’s iPhone. Tap All Watches (or the add-watch control), then Add Watch. Turn on the watch and hold it near the iPhone.
- Choose the correct setup route. Select Set Up for a Family Member, not “Set Up for Myself.”
- Pair it. Center the pairing animation in the iPhone camera viewfinder. If that fails, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually.
- Accept the terms and set basics. Choose text size and create a watch passcode. This passcode protects the watch and should be different from the parent’s iPhone passcode.
- Select the child. Choose the child in Family Sharing or use the option to add a family member and finish creating the child’s Apple Account.
- Turn on Ask to Buy. This sends download and purchase requests for approval. It does not replace Screen Time or a review of existing apps. See Apple’s Ask to Buy guidance.
- Configure cellular service. Select the supported carrier option, or choose Not Now if activation is unavailable. Confirm the plan’s number, messaging, emergency, location, and international terms with the carrier.
- Choose Wi-Fi. Allow known networks where appropriate; Wi-Fi helps, but is not a substitute for cellular when the child is regularly away from home.
- Create a parent-only Screen Time passcode. Configure communication limits, downtime, app and website limits, explicit content, purchases, privacy, and location restrictions.
- Set Schooltime. Add the school schedule and permitted contacts or features.
- Configure contacts and safety. Add trusted and emergency contacts, Find My sharing, Medical ID, Emergency SOS, and notifications.
- Test before handoff. Call and message the watch, check Find My, test location outdoors, confirm cellular away from the iPhone and home Wi-Fi, inspect Schooltime, and verify all passcodes.
Parental controls after setup
On the adult’s iPhone, open Apple Watch, select All Watches or the family watch, and open the relevant category. Apple provides controls for Cellular, Emergency SOS, Schooltime, Screen Time, Activity, Contacts, Find My, Health, Messages, Noise, App Store, Wallet and Apple Pay, Accessibility, updates, and reset options.

Screen Time and communication
Use a parent-only Screen Time code for downtime, app and website limits, communication limits, explicit content, purchases, and privacy or location changes. Test contact restrictions: group messages, third-party apps, and carrier behavior can differ.

Ask to Buy
Ask to Buy governs approval requests for downloads and purchases; it is not a complete safety filter or substitute for Screen Time.
Schooltime
Schooltime reduces distractions during scheduled hours, but it is not an unbreakable lock. Apple says a child can exit temporarily, including to check messages or call emergency services. See Apple’s Schooltime guide.

Safety features and their limits
Find My
Enable location sharing and verify that the parent sees the correct child and watch. Location depends on power, cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, permissions, and the watch being switched on; it is not guaranteed continuous, perfectly precise tracking.
Emergency SOS
Configure emergency contacts and teach the child how to call emergency services. SOS still requires a viable connection and does not replace supervision or an emergency plan.
Medical ID
Add allergies, conditions, medications, and emergency contacts. In supported circumstances, Medical ID can be shown from the watch and shared with emergency services; Apple documents this sharing in the United States and Canada at its Medical ID guide.

If setup or service fails
“Set Up for a Family Member” is missing
- Confirm the watch is cellular-capable, erased, supported by current watchOS, and near the iPhone.
- Confirm the adult is organizer or parent/guardian and the child is in Family Sharing.
- Update and restart both devices, then retry.
Cellular activation fails
Common causes include unsupported family-watch service, corporate or prepaid restrictions, carrier-account eligibility, an imported regional model, GPS-only hardware, or incomplete Family Sharing. Choose Not Now, finish setup over Wi-Fi, then ask the carrier specifically about Apple Watch For Your Kids. If no supported carrier is available and standalone use is essential, exchange or return the watch.
Other symptoms
- Child missing: verify the child’s own Apple Account, accepted Family Sharing invitation, and parent/guardian status; restart before making account changes.
- Activation Lock: the former owner must remove the watch from Apple Account and Find My.
- No location: check battery, signal, Wi-Fi, Location Services, Find My permissions, and whether the watch is powered on.
- No calls or messages: test away from the adult’s iPhone and home Wi-Fi; confirm cellular activation, communication limits, contacts, Airplane Mode, and battery.
- Pairing stalls: charge, restart, update, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, erase again if necessary, and retry with manual pairing.
Apple Watch or a dedicated kids tracker?
Choose Apple Watch when the household already uses an iPhone and wants Family Sharing, Find My, Messages, Emergency SOS, and Schooltime. Choose a dedicated tracker when the child uses Android, the family wants fewer apps and simpler controls, a smaller device or longer battery life matters more, or Apple’s account and cellular costs are unacceptable. Verify any tracker’s current carrier, subscription, privacy, and emergency functions before buying.
For a child without an iPhone, a current cellular Apple Watch—often the SE—fits the Apple ecosystem best. GPS-only models are generally the wrong purchase for independent calls, messages, or location.
