You cannot completely turn off Liquid Glass in watchOS 26. Apple does not document a dedicated off switch. The closest built-in workaround is Reduce Transparency, which makes many backgrounds more opaque and improves separation between interface elements. If movement is the problem, enable Reduce Motion separately.
How to reduce Liquid Glass on Apple Watch
- Open Settings on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Turn on Reduce Transparency.
Apple describes this setting as reducing transparency effects and increasing the contrast of backgrounds behind elements such as alerts, Siri and Glances. It is the closest supported way to make watchOS 26 look less glassy, but it does not remove every Liquid Glass treatment or redesign the interface. See Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide.
Change the setting from your iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Turn on Reduce Transparency.
Menu wording or placement can vary slightly with language and software revisions. These are watchOS controls in the Watch app—not the iPhone’s Settings → Display & Brightness options. Apple documents the iPhone route at Apple Watch accessibility.
What Reduce Transparency actually changes
Liquid Glass is the system-wide visual language Apple introduced with watchOS 26. Apple identifies it across areas including Smart Stack, notifications, Control Center, navigation, in-app controls and the numerals on the Photos watch face. The announcement is available at Apple Newsroom, with additional context in the watchOS 26 update notes.

Reduce Transparency changes the way translucent layers are rendered: backgrounds become less see-through, text can stand out more clearly, and visual blending is reduced. The result may be noticeably flatter or more opaque on some screens than on others. It is broader than a Liquid Glass-only control, so it can affect other transparency effects too.
- It can help with: translucent alerts, Control Center, Smart Stack and similar system surfaces that blend with what is behind them.
- It does not do: remove rounded controls, restore the pre-watchOS 26 layout, or guarantee that every design characteristic disappears.
- App differences: Apple documents the system setting, but third-party apps may use their own interface elements and may not respond identically.
Reduce animation with Reduce Motion
If your objection is movement, zooming or transitions rather than translucency, use Reduce Motion as a separate setting.

On the Apple Watch
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Turn on Reduce Motion.
In the iPhone Watch app
- Open Watch.
- Tap My Watch → Accessibility.
- Turn on Reduce Motion.
Apple says Reduce Motion limits movement on the Home Screen and when apps open or close. It does not make all translucent elements opaque. You can use it alone, or combine it with Reduce Transparency. The relevant controls are described in the Apple Watch User Guide.
Additional settings for readability
If text or controls remain difficult to distinguish, open Settings → Accessibility on the watch, or the equivalent Accessibility page in the Watch app, and consider:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Liquid Glass still looks visible
- Check that Reduce Transparency is enabled on the watch or under the correct Watch app → My Watch → Accessibility section.
- Test a screen where transparency is obvious, such as a notification, Control Center or Smart Stack.
- Turn Reduce Transparency off and back on to verify its current state.
- Restart the Apple Watch if the appearance does not update promptly. Apple does not list a restart as a required step for Reduce Transparency, so treat this as troubleshooting rather than a prerequisite.
- Install any compatible watchOS update offered by Settings → General → Software Update or the Watch app. Do not assume an update adds a full Liquid Glass switch; check the installed version and its notes.
- If the issue is movement, enable Reduce Motion separately.
- If text is still hard to read, add Increase Contrast, Show Borders, Bold Text or a larger Text Size.
What you cannot do in watchOS 26
Apple’s documented watchOS settings do not provide a complete previous-design mode. Reduce Transparency is not a downgrade and does not reinstall the pre-watchOS 26 interface. Some Liquid Glass-related styling, layouts, rounded controls and animations can remain after the setting is enabled. Results can also vary by screen and by app.
