Huawei’s official watch-face creator is called Theme Studio, not “Huawei Watch Face Maker.” For a personal photo or small design change, however, you usually do not need desktop software: Huawei Health can create Gallery faces and customize selected existing faces. Theme Studio is the advanced Windows workflow for building a complete face, exporting an .hwt package, and testing it on a compatible watch.
Which Huawei watch-face method should you use?

These routes are not interchangeable. Gallery and Custom features are designed for owners; Theme Studio is a visual design tool for creators. Huawei describes Theme Studio on its official landing page and in its watch-face codelab.
Create a photo watch face in Huawei Health
On supported watches, Huawei Health is the simplest way to put a photograph on the screen. Huawei’s support instructions for Gallery faces are documented for specific products in its Ireland guide and Canada guide.
- Pair the watch with the official Huawei Health app.
- Open Huawei Health and open the connected watch’s device-details screen.
- Tap Watch faces, My faces, or the equivalent section shown for your model.
- Choose Gallery, then tap +.
- Select Take photo or Gallery and choose one or more images.
- Adjust the available layout, font, color or style controls.
- Save or apply the face.
This creates a photo face inside Huawei’s supported template. It does not provide arbitrary widget placement, custom data behavior or universal animation controls. If Gallery is missing, the model, firmware, Huawei Health version, phone platform or region may not support it.

Customize an existing Huawei face
Some downloadable or pre-installed faces show a Custom button. Huawei’s support guidance explains that only faces exposing this control can be edited, while another Huawei guide describes model-dependent style and function options.
Open the face in Huawei Health, tap Custom, and choose the offered style, color or data slots. The available choices are fixed by the face designer and watch model; you cannot turn every existing face into a fully editable design.
Create a complete face with Huawei Theme Studio
What you need
- A Windows 10 laptop, as specified in Huawei’s documented codelab.
- A Huawei phone and USB cable for the documented transfer and testing flow.
- Theme Studio, prepared image resources and a compatible Huawei watch or band.
- A Huawei ID registered with Huawei Developers for the documented testing workflow.
The tool is visual and does not require writing watch-face code, but a polished result still requires prepared assets, layout knowledge and device testing.

Build and export the project
- Launch Theme Studio, choose Watch Face, and select + to create a project.
- Choose Smart Watch under WatchType.
- Select the target display resolution. Huawei’s example uses 466 × 466; that value is not universal.
- Enter an English title. Use More for metadata such as Chinese title, author, designer and description.
- Add the prepared images, hands, text, widgets and other controls required by the design.
- Use the preview and validation tools to inspect layers, data fields and screen states.
- Generate the preview or screenshot, then click Export.
- Confirm the preview is complete and export the resource package as an
.hwtfile.
The exported HWT is a watch-face resource package, not a universal file that every Huawei watch can install. Product family, resolution, resource version, region and account support all matter.

Match the design to your watch’s resolution
Huawei publishes separate capability sets for different screens, including 408 × 480, 390 × 390 or 454 × 454, 280 × 456 or 336 × 480, and 194 × 368. The relevant production guidance is in Huawei’s watch-face development guide and the 408 × 480 capability documentation.
Resolution affects which controls are available. Depending on the capability set, Theme Studio can expose time, dual time, date, seconds, lunar calendar, battery, steps, calories, heart rate, stress, exercise time, stand reminders, VO₂ max, weather, distance and app redirection, along with images, text, hands and arc text. Do not add a control until the target watch’s capability list confirms it.

Transfer and test an exported face
- Save the HWT file to the Huawei phone used for testing.
- Sign in to Huawei Health with the Huawei ID used in the documented developer workflow.
- Open the watch-face area and load the resource package through the available local or testing option.
- Install it on the compatible watch and inspect the result on the actual device.
For ordinary installed faces, Huawei’s general path is Huawei Health → device details → Watch faces → More → select a face → Install or Set as default. On many watches, you can also touch and hold the home screen to select an installed face. Labels vary by series.
Why a custom face may not install
Gallery or Custom is missing
- The watch does not support Gallery or editable faces.
- The option is under My faces or Manage local watch faces rather than the main Watch faces page.
- Huawei Health or watch firmware is outdated.
- The feature is restricted by country, region or phone platform.
Huawei’s product-specific instructions use different labels, so search the connected device’s details rather than assuming one universal menu.
The design looks distorted
- Confirm the exact watch model and project resolution.
- Use the matching capability set and recheck image dimensions and layer order.
- Remove controls unsupported by that resolution.
- Regenerate the preview and validate again in Theme Studio.
The HWT file is rejected
- Verify that the package was made for the exact product family.
- Update the official Huawei Health app and watch firmware.
- Check Huawei ID, developer authorization, region and testing status.
- Confirm that the package is complete and was exported successfully.
Modified Huawei Health APKs and community sideloading methods are not Huawei’s documented solution. They can create security, account, compatibility and device-support risks. Treat community reports, such as discussions on Reddit, as anecdotal rather than official installation instructions.

Android, iPhone and regional limits
Watch-face features are not identical across Android and iOS. Huawei’s platform guidance says that, for the referenced band, downloading new faces through Huawei Health is Android-only and that iPhone owners may need an Android phone for the download before reconnecting to iOS. The same page warns that availability differs by country or region: Huawei platform guidance.
Before relying on a creator workflow, verify the exact watch model, phone operating system, Huawei Health version, country and whether Gallery, Custom or local-face installation actually appears in your app.
Animation, publishing and selling
Animation is capability-dependent. Huawei’s specification framework distinguishes static, frame-animation, video, depth-of-field and background-change functions, but a particular watch may support only some of them: Huawei’s specification document.

Creators who want distribution can use Huawei’s Themes ecosystem for registration, certification, upload, review and settlement: Huawei Themes. Huawei’s overview advertises creators receiving up to 70% of revenue; that is Huawei’s program claim, not a guaranteed rate for every market or product. The linked pricing framework is dated August 11, 2022, so its tiers should not be treated as confirmed current consumer prices.
Third-party services may offer ready-made or commissioned faces, but they are separate from Huawei. For example, GoTo.WF describes Huawei Health-based delivery for selected GT models. WatchMaker should not be presented as Huawei’s official maker; its current App Store listing is aimed at Apple Watch.
Best choice for most owners
Choose Huawei Health Gallery for a family photo or other personal image, Huawei Health Custom when an existing face exposes the options you want, and Theme Studio when you need a genuinely authored face with custom layers, data fields, metadata and an HWT export. That distinction prevents the most common mistake: expecting a simple phone photo tool to behave like Huawei’s full desktop design workflow.
