IFA 2024 Wearables: What the Berlin Show Actually Delivered

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IFA 2024 was not a blockbuster smartwatch-launch show. Amazfit supplied its clearest new-watch story with the T-Rex 3, while Samsung showcased existing Galaxy wearables as part of a wider connected-health ecosystem. Huawei was a plausible September watchmaker to watch, but the pre-show evidence did not establish an IFA launch; expectations for new Garmin, Fitbit, Honor, and Withings hardware were lower still.

When was IFA 2024, and what kind of wearable event was it?

IFA 2024 ran in Berlin from September 6–10. The show covered consumer technology broadly, with official themes including AI, sustainability, digital innovation, and a Fitness & Digital Health area—not a dedicated smartwatch launch slate. The official IFA gallery records the event dates; the 2024 sales brochure outlines its themes and show areas.

IFA remained relevant to wearable makers and digital health, but it was not necessarily the first-choice venue for the biggest watch announcements. Timing also mattered: Garmin had just announced the Fenix 8, and Apple’s September event was approaching. A brand’s presence at IFA, a product demonstration there, and a product launch timed to the show are different things. The distinction is especially important for Samsung, whose booth showcased Galaxy wearables without making IFA their debut.

What IFA 2024 delivered: Amazfit T-Rex 3

Amazfit was the strongest pre-show candidate for a new watch, and it delivered. The company announced the T-Rex 3 at IFA Berlin on September 6, 2024. Amazfit positioned it as a rugged outdoor smartwatch, making it the show’s clearest product-led wearable launch. Its US launch announcement gives a starting price of $279.99 in the US; the UK announcement lists a European starting price of €299.90. These are launch prices, not current promotional quotes.

What the T-Rex 3 is built to do

The watch’s appeal is outdoor navigation and training breadth rather than a general-purpose app ecosystem. Amazfit lists offline and contour maps, turn-by-turn directions, dual-band GPS, and more than 170 sports modes, including activities such as HYROX, freediving, ultramarathon, and strength training. The company also describes readiness, HRV-related, and sleep features, with integration across its wider health-tracking products, including the Helio Ring.

Amazfit’s current US product page specifies a 1.5-inch AMOLED display with peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits and claims more than three weeks of typical-use battery life. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent brightness, battery, GPS-accuracy, or health-metric test results. Regional models and features can vary; check the official T-Rex 3 page for the market where you plan to buy.

Who should care about this launch?

  • Outdoor and endurance users: The combination of maps, navigation, sports modes, and a rugged-watch format is the most relevant part of the announcement.
  • People seeking a full smartwatch experience: Compare its outdoor strengths with the notifications, apps, and phone integration offered by lifestyle-focused watches; these products do not serve exactly the same purpose.
  • Recovery-focused users: The Helio Ring connection points toward a watch-and-ring ecosystem, but a ring is not a substitute for a watch’s display, GPS, or real-time workout controls.

Samsung: Galaxy Ring and Watch as an ecosystem showcase

Samsung’s IFA 2024 presence centered on its “AI for All” positioning and demonstrations of connected devices. At the booth, Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring appeared as part of broader health, Galaxy AI, and SmartThings experiences. Samsung’s booth coverage documents the demonstrations; its IFA hub describes the event theme. This was a showcase of the wearable ecosystem, not evidence that either product launched at IFA.

Watch or ring?

A smartwatch gives you a display, notifications, apps, workout controls, and often GPS and other interactive features. A smart ring is smaller and more discreet, and is generally aimed at passive sleep, recovery, and health monitoring. It can suit someone who wants tracking without wearing a screen, or who prefers to pair it with a conventional watch. It offers less immediate interaction during a workout and relies more heavily on a phone app.

Samsung’s combined health features are most compelling for people already using Galaxy phones and Samsung Health. That ecosystem connection is a practical consideration, not a guarantee that every feature is available on every phone or in every country. Samsung’s wearable health overview explains its approach; health-tracking features should not be read as a medical diagnosis.

Huawei: a September possibility, not a confirmed IFA launch

Huawei was a credible name to watch for September wearable news. Pre-show reporting pointed to possible Watch GT 5 and Watch GT 5 Pro models and said the company had indicated that TruSense-powered devices would arrive during the month. But the timing and venue were unclear: that evidence did not establish that Huawei would launch a Watch GT at IFA. Treat it as a possible September announcement, not an IFA-confirmed product.

Why expectations were lower for other watch brands

Withings: a possible hybrid surprise

Withings’ hybrid-watch approach—traditional watch styling paired with health tracking—made a ScanWatch update an appealing possibility for buyers who do not want a full smartwatch interface. The company had shown ScanWatch 2 and ScanWatch Light at the previous IFA, but its more recent products, including ScanWatch Nova and BeamO, made a major new-watch announcement less certain. A new watch was speculation, not a strong prediction; smart scales and health-focused devices also mattered to Withings’ broader show story.

Garmin: the Fenix 8 had already taken the spotlight

Pre-show reporting suggested Garmin was likely to be absent from IFA, as it had been the previous year. Its prominent 2024 activity already centered on the Fenix 8. Certification leaks around Instinct 3 or speculation about a Venu or Vivomove update were not enough to make an IFA launch a sound expectation. That is a confidence assessment, not an official Garmin statement that it would skip the show.

Fitbit and Google: no obvious hardware reset

Fitbit’s hardware activity had been relatively quiet apart from the Ace LTE for children, while Google had released the third-generation Pixel Watch. A new Fitbit smartwatch did not look likely; a Charge 6 refresh seemed early, and possible Luxe or Inspire 3 updates remained hopeful rather than credible IFA predictions. That narrow product-cycle assessment does not establish anything broader about Fitbit’s future.

With the GPS connectivity, you could get a map of your workout route in the app for outdoor activity by connecting to your phone GPS.

Honor: a secondary wearable watchlist

Honor was expected to focus more on smartphones. A Watch 4 update was possible, but the lack of convincing leaks, recent Band 9 and Watch GS 4 launches, and the tendency for some products to appear first in China made Honor a lower-priority wearable bet for IFA.

IFA 2024 wearable watchlist, ranked by pre-show confidence

Brand Pre-show expectation Confidence What the evidence supported
Amazfit New T-Rex model High Teasing and leaks pointed to a new outdoor watch; Amazfit ultimately launched the T-Rex 3 at IFA.
Samsung Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch demonstrations Medium A significant wearable ecosystem showcase was likely; the products were not IFA debuts.
Huawei Possible Watch GT-related news Low September activity was plausible, but an IFA launch was not established.
Withings Possible hybrid watch or health-tech surprise Very low A ScanWatch update was imaginable, but recent releases weakened the case for a major watch launch.
Garmin No major IFA launch expected Very low The Fenix 8 had already been announced; an IFA appearance or new model was not supported by strong evidence.
Fitbit and Honor No major wearable refresh expected Very low Their recent product cycles and limited pre-show signals did not point to a significant IFA hardware launch.

The brand-by-brand pre-show assessment was also covered by Wareable’s IFA 2024 wearables preview. As the event is now historical, its rumors belong in the context of what was knowable before the show, not as confirmed announcements.

What the show meant for wearable buyers

IFA 2024’s wearable story was concentrated rather than broad: one clear new-watch launch from Amazfit and a prominent Samsung demonstration of connected health devices. If you were following the show for a rugged sports watch, the T-Rex 3 was the announcement to watch. For smart rings and health features, Samsung’s booth offered an ecosystem showcase rather than a new-product debut. Huawei remained a September possibility, while expectations for new hardware from Garmin, Fitbit, Honor, and Withings needed to stay modest.

For buyers comparing categories, start with how you plan to use the device: navigation and outdoor training point toward a sports watch; a screen, notifications, and apps favor a smartwatch; unobtrusive sleep and recovery tracking point toward a ring. Confirm local availability, phone compatibility, and the feature set in your region before buying.
