Kikuchi Nakagawa is a Japanese independent watchmaking project founded in 2018 by Yusuke Kikuchi and Tomonari Nakagawa. The pair bring distinct paths to the bench: Kikuchi came to watchmaking through architecture and software before training in Paris, while Nakagawa trained as a swordsmith before entering the watch industry. Their Murakumo KN001WH puts the project’s approach into a defined form: a 36.8 mm steel automatic watch with a 48-hour power reserve.
Who makes Kikuchi Nakagawa watches?
The brand’s reported founding date is June 2018, when the two Japanese watchmakers established Kikuchi Nakagawa. The founders met in Paris in 2012 and decided to make watches together, according to the official maker biography and the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) entry.
Yusuke Kikuchi: architecture, software and Paris
Kikuchi graduated from the University of Tokyo’s architecture department and worked for a domestic software vendor before going to Paris to study watchmaking. He then practiced repair at Antoine De Macedo Horloger. After returning to Japan, he founded the Chronomètre maison and made original watches before establishing Kikuchi Nakagawa.
Tomonari Nakagawa: swordsmithing and watch production
Nakagawa first trained as a swordsmith, then attended watchmaking school. His subsequent work included a position at Citizen and small-scale production at Precision Watch Tokyo. In a webChronos interview, he said, “But the most important thing is to make good products.” That is the English-language rendering of his comment in the interview.

What does Kikuchi Nakagawa aim to make?
The GPHG entry reproduces two themes stated by the makers: “Extracting distinctive abstract aspects of the metal and pursuing the art of metal to push beyond its functionality” and “Making an authentic watch as an extension of the golden age of mechanical wristwatches.” These are the brand’s own aims, rather than independent measures of a watch’s quality.
The first theme points to metalwork as more than a practical casing for a movement: the material and its treatment are part of the intended expression. The second places the project in conversation with mechanical wristwatch traditions. Those ambitions provide a useful lens for understanding the Murakumo, while the specific design and technical details are best judged from the watch itself.

What is the Kikuchi Nakagawa Murakumo?
Murakumo KN001WH is the reference documented in the GPHG product record, with a listed launch date of November 2019. It is an automatic mechanical watch with hours, minutes and seconds, a white-silver dial, a leather strap and a pin buckle.

These specifications are for the GPHG-listed KN001WH and should not be assumed to describe every Murakumo configuration. GQ Japan’s 2020 profile describes Murakumo as the brand’s first model and reports a Vaucher movement and a black-polished stainless-steel case. It also notes the small-seconds display at six o’clock. Those details are attributable to that dated account, not a guarantee that every version shares them.

How big is the Murakumo watch?
The KN001WH measures 36.8 mm across and 8.5 mm thick in the GPHG record. Those figures describe a relatively compact, slim case by contemporary wristwatch dimensions, though how it wears depends on wrist shape, lug geometry and strap fit as well as diameter and thickness. The available entry does not state lug-to-lug length, so that measurement cannot be used here to predict its footprint more precisely.
Its listed 30 m water resistance is a modest rating. It is a specification, not a promise of suitability for swimming or other water activity; follow the maker’s guidance for the particular watch and its condition.
