To read it, find the fixed markers beside the disks and read the numeral at each marker; a separate disk near 5 o’clock shows the seconds. The arrangement is unusual, so it may take a moment to understand at a glance. Ōtsuka Lōtec says the layout is intended to keep the time indication visible when a jacket cuff covers part of the watch face.
How to read the satellite-hour display
Ōtsuka Lōtec’s product imagery and description show rotating numeral disks moving alongside fixed markers. Read the hour and minute values where the disks align with those markers on the right side of the dial. The seconds are separate: a disk near 5 o’clock moves continuously, independent of the hour disk’s position. The hour disk advances in a jump-like action twice per hour, rather than moving continuously.
The arrangement is not a conventional set of hands, and the maker does not claim that every wearer will find it instantly intuitive. The most useful way to approach it is to identify the fixed markers first, then read the passing numerals against them.
Why the time display sits on the right
The maker says the No.5 KAI adapts a mechanism originally used in night clocks to the problem of a wristwatch partly obscured by a jacket cuff. By grouping the hour and minute indication on the dial’s right side, the design aims to leave the time visible when the cuff hides some of the watch face. This is Ōtsuka Lōtec’s stated design rationale, not an independently tested visibility claim.

The KAI inherits design elements from the Ōtsuka Lōtec No.5, which the maker says was released in 2012. The GPHG describes the watch as using a Japanese Miyota movement with an additional satellite-hour module designed and made in-house.
How its satellite-hour mechanism works
Under the maker’s description, the hour disk engages a ball-bearing roller at the 8 o’clock position. That engagement triggers the disk’s twice-hourly jump-like change. The continuously moving seconds disk near 5 o’clock is mechanically distinct in how it presents the seconds; its movement does not depend on where the hour disk sits.

MinebeaMitsumi, the component supplier, said in its January 15, 2025 announcement that the watch adopted a newly designed miniature ball bearing and the company’s smallest ball bearing. The supplier called the No.5 KAI “the world’s first mechanical watch with the satellite hour mechanism that switches the ‘hour disk’ by directly engaging with a pin and a bearing,” and also described it as Japan’s first mechanical watch equipped with a satellite-hour mechanism. Those are MinebeaMitsumi’s priority claims, not independently verified rankings.

Setting the time and handling the crown
Ōtsuka Lōtec gives a specific instruction for setting the watch: “Always turn the crown moving the time forward, when setting the time. Don’t turn the crown the other way around when setting the time, for fear you should break it.” Follow the maker’s direction and turn the crown forward when setting the time.
