Three Phillips auction results vary substantially by reference, age and lot details; they are examples, not a market index. Make the decision around the individual watch, its originality and condition, likely service needs, and its all-in price against genuinely comparable examples.
What the recent auction results do—and don’t—show
Three Phillips sales offer useful reference points, but they are different watches from separate auctions, not a controlled comparison. Their nominal Hong Kong dollar results do not include a comparable account of buyer costs, and the records do not establish a market-wide price direction.

Do not average these figures, treat the highest as typical, or infer that prices are rising or falling. Reference, dial, condition, originality, documentation and sale circumstances differ. The records do not provide enough comparable sales to calculate a robust valuation or identify a bargain window.
Which vintage Speedmaster Professional are you considering?
“Professional” is not just a general label in the watch’s history. Phillips says reference 105.012, released in 1964, was the first Speedmaster reference to carry the word “Professional” on its dial. Reference 145.022 belongs to a later movement era. Sotheby’s collector guide describes an approximate transition around 1968 from calibre 321 to calibre 861; Phillips’ 1970 145.022-69ST and 1988 ST145.022 examples both use calibre 861. The 105.012 and 145.022 are useful anchors if you are comparing classic Professional models, but neither reference alone tells you whether a particular watch is correct, original or worth its asking price.

How to judge the individual watch
Compare candidates in a consistent order. A strong archive document or an attractive price cannot make an incorrect or poorly understood example equivalent to a sound one.
- Reference, year and movement: establish the exact reference and assess whether the movement fits the watch’s period and configuration.
- Originality and condition: assess the dial, hands, bezel, case and movement. Ask which parts have been replaced or altered, and request clear photographs of the watch and movement.
- Service state: obtain the service history and, if it is unclear, arrange an assessment by a qualified watchmaker before committing. Include likely repair or service costs in your budget.
- Provenance and accessories: consider archive documents, warranty, box and bracelet as supporting evidence or included items, not as substitutes for evaluating the watch itself.
- Seller and transaction: check the seller’s transparency, return terms and whether an independent inspection is possible.
- All-in price: compare the total landed cost, including buyer fees and other purchase costs, with completed sales of watches that are genuinely similar in reference, period, condition and originality.
What Omega documents can establish
An Omega Extract from the Archives can provide historical production and delivery information, as the documents described in Phillips’ 1970 and 1988 lot records illustrate. It is useful provenance evidence, but it does not by itself establish that every component on a watch is original or that the watch is in sound condition.

Omega announced an official Certificate of Authenticity initiative for vintage timepieces on 14 October 2019. The announcement establishes that the initiative was introduced; it does not establish its current eligibility rules, cost, turnaround time or availability in your market. A Certificate of Authenticity and an Extract from the Archives are different named services. The cited information does not establish that they serve the same purpose. Compare any document’s details with the watch, and do not treat paperwork as a replacement for competent physical inspection.

Allow for vintage servicing and ownership costs
Omega says service frequency depends on the model, climate and care, and gives five to eight years as general guidance for watches depending on conditions of use. It recommends an Omega boutique or authorized service centre. This is general brand guidance, not a guaranteed service interval for every vintage Speedmaster. Omega user manual
For a vintage purchase, ask for the available service history and have a qualified watchmaker assess the specific watch. If service status is uncertain, price the watch on the assumption that work may be needed rather than treating an undocumented claim of recent service as settled fact.

The Moonwatch story is context, not a valuation
The Speedmaster’s space history is part of its appeal, but it does not make every vintage example equally scarce, original or valuable. Omega’s 2025 retrospective reports that NASA declared the Speedmaster “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” on 1 March 1965; that is Omega’s account of NASA’s qualification. Omega also says the CK 2998 was the second Speedmaster generation and that astronaut Walter Schirra wore his personal example on Sigma 7 in 1962. Those historical claims come from Omega’s 2024 article, rather than a NASA record. Omega’s 2024 historical article
