Both received a reworked, slimmer-profile case construction and box-shaped sapphire crystals in IWC’s 2024 update. The right choice depends on wrist fit, how much dial information you want, and which exact reference and case material you prefer.
What is the difference between the Portugieser Automatic 40 and 42?
The main distinctions are movement, reserve, and dial layout. IWC’s 2024 announcement identifies the Automatic 42 with the 52011 caliber and the Automatic 40 with the 82200 caliber. The figures below are IWC specifications, not results from independent performance testing.

In the 52011, IWC specifies a Pellaton winding system with ceramic components and two barrels. The 82200 also uses Pellaton winding, with zirconium-oxide ceramic parts; IWC specifies 60 hours of reserve in its mainspring. The stated reserves are a useful practical distinction if you rotate watches or leave one unworn for a few days.
Is the Portugieser 40 too small, or the 42 too large?
The stated diameters differ by 2 mm, but diameter alone does not establish how either watch will sit on a particular wrist. Lug-to-lug dimensions are also important to fit, and those figures are not established in the 2024 announcement. If fit is decisive, compare the exact reference on your wrist rather than relying on diameter alone.

Which dial suits you better?
Automatic 42: more information at a glance
The 42 mm dial places small seconds at 9 o’clock and a power-reserve display at 3 o’clock. Choose this arrangement if you want to see the remaining reserve on the dial as well as benefit from the longer stated runtime.
Automatic 40: a cleaner layout, with no date
The 40 mm model places small seconds at 6 o’clock and has no date window. Its dial is the simpler choice if you prefer not to have a reserve indicator or date display. IWC says the updated dials use 15 layers of transparent lacquer.

What changed in the 2024 models?
IWC describes a reworked, slimmer-profile case construction and box-shaped sapphire crystals for both sizes. These updates apply to the 2024 generation described in the announcement; do not assume that an older watch with a similar name has the same specifications.
Which references and materials are named?
IWC’s 2024 release identifies six new Automatic 42 versions in stainless steel, 18-carat white gold, or 18-carat red gold. For the Automatic 40, it names two precious-metal references:

Is the Year of the Horse watch one of the standard Automatic 42s?
No. Announced by IWC on 14 October 2025, the Portugieser Automatic 42 Year of the Horse is a separate limited edition, reference IW501709. IWC specifies a stainless-steel case, burgundy dial, 52011 caliber, and a limit of 500 pieces. The company says the Year of the Horse begins on 17 February 2026. Treat this special edition separately from the standard IW5017 family, and verify regional availability before looking for one.

How to choose between them
- Choose the Automatic 42 if the longer, IWC-stated 168-hour reserve and on-dial reserve display are priorities, and you prefer the 42 mm diameter.
- Choose the Automatic 40 if you prefer a 40 mm diameter and a dial with small seconds but no date or reserve display, and 60 hours of stated reserve is sufficient for your use.
- Compare exact references before choosing: case metal, dial, and whether a watch is a standard variant or a named special edition can vary.
For older watches, check the reference rather than applying current-generation specifications by name alone. For example, IWC’s archived listing for IW500710 describes an older 42.3 mm Automatic with caliber 52010, a date, a power-reserve display, and a 168-hour reserve; that is not the specification set for the 2024 IW5017 generation. Prices, regional stock, and complete current variant availability are not established here, so confirm them with IWC or a seller in your region.
