Mojo Lens was an augmented-reality contact-lens prototype, not a product launch: it was designed to place information in a wearer’s field of view, but Mojo said in January 2023 that the lens had not shipped and that the company was slowing its development to focus on Micro-LED displays. The technology reached a reported on-eye demonstration in 2022; the evidence available here does not establish a later launch, regulatory approval, or a resumption of lens development.
What was Mojo Lens designed to do?
Mojo Vision described Mojo Lens as a smart contact lens intended to show digital information without requiring the wearer to look at a phone or a conventional screen. Its 2022 prototype paired a tiny monochrome display with hardware for power, wireless communication, and eye-motion sensing.
IEEE Spectrum reported a display density of 14,000 pixels per inch. The prototype also included medical-grade microbatteries, a custom power-management circuit, and a custom 5-gigahertz radio using a proprietary low-latency protocol. Motion sensors supported eye tracking; custom image sensors were not yet included in the prototype described in the report. IEEE Spectrum’s March 30, 2022 report details the hardware.
The intended interface used eye movement to navigate or select information shown around the periphery of the wearer’s view. Demonstrations included compass headings, travel information, a cycling display, a teleprompter, and monochrome video. An update to IEEE’s report on November 3, 2022, described an Alexa Shopping List prototype app developed with Amazon’s support. These were demonstrations of a developing system, not evidence of a released app store or a consumer-ready experience.

Was the Mojo smart contact lens actually worn?
There were two different demonstrations, and they should not be confused. In March 2022, IEEE Spectrum journalist Tekla S. Perry looked through a lens held close to her eye; she did not wear it. In that setup, the lens could not track her eye movement.
Separately, Mojo told IEEE Spectrum that CEO Drew Perkins wore a feature-complete, battery-powered, wirelessly communicating prototype on June 23, 2022. That company-reported on-eye milestone showed a prototype being worn for an internal demonstration. It did not establish general wearability, consumer safety, regulatory authorization, or readiness for sale.

What safety and regulatory steps remained?
At the time of IEEE Spectrum’s 2022 reporting, Mojo said the lens remained in safety testing, with clinical testing and further development still ahead of an FDA application for consumer sale. Mojo executive Steve Sinclair told IEEE: “Everything is predicated on eventually getting FDA certification. We don’t like to presume how long that’s going to take.”
That was a statement about the path the company expected to pursue, not evidence that the lens later received FDA approval, clearance, or certification. The sources cited here do not establish a subsequent FDA outcome. IEEE’s report also noted that contact-lens fitting requires an eye exam; the prototype demonstration was not a substitute for an established fitting and clinical process.

How did Mojo Lens development change?
Mojo’s public development story moved from feasibility work to a hardware prototype and then to a company pivot. The milestones below distinguish announced plans and demonstrations from a product reaching the market.

Mojo’s news index, checked in 2026, surfaced newer Micro-LED developments and the 2023 pivot announcement. An index cannot rule out unannounced work, so whether lens development or regulatory activity resumed after the dated statements above is not established by these sources.

Can you buy Mojo Lens now?
No purchase or shipment was established in the company’s January 2023 statement, which said the lens had not shipped. The sources cited here do not establish that it later became available. There is no supported basis here for a price, release date, prescription range, battery-life estimate, wearing-duration claim, or consumer performance benchmark.
Mojo’s prototype is also not a product that can be directly compared with consumer smart glasses as a purchase option. A lens and eyewear differ in form factor and visibility, while displays, input methods, power systems, safety requirements, and maturity depend on the specific product. Mojo’s demonstrations show intended uses and prototype capabilities, not tested comparative performance or proven user benefits.
