It keeps the earlier Speedmaster’s straight-lug case and vintage-leaning design, but adds a grey-blue dial and a modern hand-wound Calibre 3861. Its crystal is sapphire—not Hesalite—even though its shape is designed to evoke the older material.
What does “First Omega in Space” refer to?
The name points to a specific historical watch: Schirra’s personal Omega CK 2998, worn on Sigma 7, which launched on October 3, 1962. Omega says the CK 2998 was first released in 1959 as the second generation of the Speedmaster family. The 2024 model is a tribute to that watch, not the original flight-worn CK 2998. Omega’s October 3, 2024 announcement gives the brand’s account of the model’s heritage.
What is different about the 2024 model?
Vintage-inspired case and dial
The watch has a polished and brushed, symmetrical stainless-steel case with straight lugs, Alpha-style hour and minute hands, and vintage-style Super-LumiNova. Its black aluminum tachymeter bezel includes the vintage-associated “Dot Over Ninety” detail. The grey-blue dial has a CVD coating and references certain 1960s CK 2998 dials. These details give it a different look from the more familiar Moonwatch Professional.
Sapphire with a Hesalite-like shape
The crystal is shaped sapphire, designed to recall the form of Hesalite on vintage Speedmasters. It is not a Hesalite crystal. Omega also places a Seahorse medallion on the caseback, alongside the engravings “SPEEDMASTER,” “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.”

Modern movement, not a Calibre 321 recreation
The 2024 FOiS uses hand-wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. It is a modern movement choice rather than a recreation with the historical CK 2998’s Calibre 321. Fratello’s October 3, 2024 launch report lists a 50-hour power reserve, 21,600 vibrations per hour, 26 jewels, a silicon balance spring, and resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss; these are reported specifications, not independent test results. Fratello’s launch report also details the dimensions and configurations.

At 39.7 mm across, the FOiS is smaller than the 42 mm Moonwatch Professional described in launch coverage. Lug-to-lug length and thickness are also useful fit details: case diameter alone does not tell the whole story of how a watch wears.

Omega describes the bracelet as a flat-link steel design with a patented comfort-release adjustment system. Hodinkee’s October 3, 2024 report independently gives the bracelet version’s US launch price as $7,900 and says the model was not limited at announcement. Neither launch coverage nor the dated launch prices establish current inventory or current local pricing. Hodinkee’s launch coverage includes its launch-era specifications and pricing.

How does the FOiS compare with the Moonwatch?
Both are Speedmasters, but they answer different preferences and draw on different parts of the collection’s history.

The FOiS’s defining historical association is Schirra’s Sigma 7 flight and the first Omega worn in space. The Moonwatch’s story is tied to NASA qualification and the later lunar association. Choose between them by case shape and size, dial and bezel character, crystal preference, and whether you want the FOiS’s particular heritage story—not by treating one as a substitute for the other.

Which strap fits the FOiS?
Fratello reports a 19 mm lug width. That measurement can help when searching for an aftermarket strap, but width alone does not guarantee fit: check the strap’s end shape, taper, attachment, and compatibility with the watch before buying. The factory launch choices were the steel bracelet and black or brown leather straps.
