Omega’s Extract of the Archives: How It Worked and What It Shows

Omega’s former Extract of the Archives used a movement serial number to locate historical factory records. Here’s what the document could show—and what it could not establish about a watch today.

Omega’s former Extract of the Archives used a watch’s movement serial number to find historical factory records and issue a document summarizing information held in those records. A 2016 firsthand account describes a manual search through microfilm and handwritten registers. The extract could show production or assembly and shipping details, but it was not a present-day inspection or proof that a vintage watch’s parts remain original. Secondary sources describe the service as suspended; check with Omega directly for its current availability.

How the historical archive lookup worked

The lookup started with the movement serial number—not the caliber number or the watch reference. In a 2016 account of a visit to the Omega Museum archive, Robert-Jan Broer used his Speedmaster Professional reference 145.012 as an example. Its movement serial was 25,006,242 and its caliber was 321. Fratello’s 2016 account describes staff locating the serial range on microfilm and then consulting handwritten registers.

That account is a description of the process at the time, not confirmation of Omega’s current archive technology, application steps, or service. It describes a manual records search rather than an instant public serial-number lookup.

What information could appear on an extract?

The document’s contents depended on the records available for that particular watch. The 2016 account describes fields such as watch type or model, caliber, movement serial, reference, date information, and original shipping destination. The example record showed movement delivery and assembly details; a handwritten register provided a shipping date and destination code, which Broer identified as Finland.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For that example, the reported assembly or production date was February 26, 1968, and the shipping date was October 22, 1968. These dates illustrate one watch’s records; they do not mean every extract contains both dates. The account says that if a production date was unavailable, the shipping date could be printed instead.

A destination refers to where the watch was originally shipped according to the record. It does not establish where it was later sold, who owned it, or where it is now. The account also notes that an archive might hold additional component information, such as a dial-order record, but that this was not included in the extract discussed. Do not assume every extract provides detailed component provenance.

What an archive extract does not prove

An extract records historical factory information; it does not report the watch’s current physical condition. SpeedyBase’s guide, reviewed October 4, 2026, says the former extract did not verify present-day condition, individual components, or later alterations. Read SpeedyBase’s explanation of the extract’s limits.

  • It does not establish that the watch still contains the parts with which it left the factory.
  • It does not, by itself, authenticate every component currently fitted to the watch.
  • It does not replace a current physical examination when condition or originality matters.

Use an archive document as evidence about what Omega’s historical records say, not as a complete verdict on a watch as it exists today.

Is Omega’s Extract of the Archives still available?

Secondary sources describe the former service as suspended. SpeedyBase reports that Omega distanced itself from the third-party service in 2023, and a 2023 comment in the Fratello discussion says the service had been paused. These reports do not independently confirm Omega’s current position. For current availability, eligibility, process, or price, ask Omega directly; do not rely on an old ordering description or fee as current.

Omega separately announced a vintage Certificate of Authenticity initiative in its press room on October 14, 2019. That announcement is not evidence that the certificate is currently available, and it does not establish its eligibility, price, or equivalence to the former Extract of the Archives. Omega’s 2019 announcement uses a different name for a distinct offering.

How to use an old extract when evaluating a watch

  1. Match the identifiers. Compare the movement serial, caliber, and reference on the document with the watch and its accompanying records. They identify different things, so do not treat them as interchangeable.
  2. Read dates and destination narrowly. A date may be an assembly or production date, or it may be a shipping date used when the production date was unavailable. The destination is a recorded shipping destination, not a complete ownership or sales history.
  3. Assess the watch itself separately. If current condition or originality of parts matters, seek an appropriate present-day physical examination. The archive extract alone cannot answer those questions.
  4. Verify any new Omega service directly. Ask Omega whether a relevant service is currently offered where you are, what it covers, and what it costs before sending information or paying a third party.

The 2016 Fratello report listed a historical fee of CHF 120. That is a dated figure from the former service, not a current price quote.
