Its hand-wound P.3000 movement and three-day reserve suit the watch’s old-fashioned character, but the case is unapologetically large and the dial may be dated or date-free. It is a distinctive combination; whether it works for you depends most on wrist fit and which dial version you prefer.
What is the Panerai PAM00424?
Panerai describes the Radiomir California 3 Days as inspired by an original model developed for the Italian Navy in the 1930s. The modern watch pairs a black California dial with a 47 mm cushion-shaped AISI 316L steel case, a screw-down conical crown, and a sapphire display back. The official manual rates water resistance at 10 bar, approximately 100 m under normal conditions. Panerai’s official instructions provide the specifications and operating guidance.
The dial’s mixed layout is the defining visual feature: Roman numerals occupy one half, Arabic numerals the other, with baton markers and a triangle at 12. It is much busier than a conventional minimalist dial, and the large polished case makes the whole watch conspicuous. Fratello’s account of the term “California dial” traces its popularization to Los Angeles dial refinisher Kirk Rich in the 1970s, while noting earlier associations for this mixed-numeral layout; that is a reported origin story, not settled nomenclature history. Fratello’s 2018 review also compares the PAM00424 with the earlier PAM00249, noting that the later model uses Panerai’s P.3000 rather than the earlier watch’s OP X, based on ETA/Unitas 6497-1.
Does the PAM00424 have a date?
Not every PAM00424 has the same dial: dated and no-date versions are reported. The dated version has a window at 3 o’clock, which interrupts the California dial’s symmetry; the no-date version leaves the numerals and markers unobstructed. Fratello’s reviewer preferred the no-date layout, a matter of taste rather than an objective defect. Fratello discusses both variants. The independent Panerai Reference Database reports that the Q series (2014) removed the date function, but it states that it is not approved by Panerai. Check the actual dial and the watch’s serial or production documentation rather than assuming a date configuration from the reference number alone.

Is the PAM00424 easy to wear at 47 mm?
It is large by conventional watch-sizing standards. Fratello reports a 52 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 27 mm strap width. Its reviewer found the watch less imposing than some 44 mm Luminor models, attributing that impression partly to the wire lugs and the absence of a Luminor crown guard. A 2025 hands-on account from Precision Watches likewise describes its example as balanced and comfortable while acknowledging its size. Those are individual wrist impressions, not a fit guarantee.
The polished cushion case and oversized crown remain visually prominent. Wire lugs change the profile and how the strap sits, but they do not make the 47 mm diameter disappear. Before buying, try it on if possible and compare the reported 52 mm lug-to-lug with a watch you already know fits. Thickness is not consistently reported in the sources here, so do not rely on an assumed figure.

What are the P.3000 movement and winding routine like?
Panerai specifies a hand-wound P.3000 calibre measuring 5.3 mm thick, with 21 jewels, two barrels, 21,600 alternations per hour, 162 components, and a three-day power reserve. The official instructions say to unscrew the crown, wind clockwise until it stops, then screw the crown back down. In everyday ownership, that means winding manually and keeping track of when you last did it; the three-day reserve offers some flexibility, but this is not an automatic watch.
Fratello’s reviewer liked the movement and its display-back presentation, while wishing for a power-reserve indicator. That is a personal preference, not a missing specification. The same review gives a component count of 161, one fewer than the official manual’s 162; use the manual’s current figure when the count matters.

Can you use the PAM00424 as an everyday watch?
It can be an everyday watch for someone comfortable with its size, hand-winding, and distinctive dial. The 10 bar rating is the model’s stated specification, not evidence that a particular pre-owned watch remains water-resistant. For an older example, base water use on its current condition and a recent pressure test, especially after service or case work.
The manual explains that the wire-lug attachment system can be removed to replace the strap. Strap-width listings conflict: Fratello gives 27 mm, while the independent reference database lists 26 mm. Check the exact watch and confirm fit with the manufacturer or strap seller before ordering a replacement.

What should you check before buying a pre-owned PAM00424?
- Dial version: Confirm whether the example is dated or no-date, and compare its serial or production documentation with the seller’s description.
- Wrist fit: Assess the 47 mm diameter and reported 52 mm lug-to-lug measurement on your own wrist rather than relying on another reviewer’s comfort report.
- Movement routine: Decide whether daily manual winding and a three-day power reserve suit how you wear and rotate watches.
- Condition and originality: Inspect the dial, hands, case, crown, and wire-lug attachment, and ask for service records and evidence of originality.
- Water resistance: Request a current pressure-test result for the specific watch; the original model rating does not establish present-day condition.
- Replacement straps: Verify the attachment and width for the individual watch before buying, given the 26 mm versus 27 mm discrepancy in published listings.
