The Rolex Perpetual 1908 is a 39 mm mechanical watch that pairs a classically styled dial with a display case back and Rolex’s calibre 7140. Rolex introduced the collection in 2023; its design looks to early Oyster Perpetual watches, including the 1931 model, but is a reinterpretation rather than a reissue. The details below are manufacturer-described specifications, not observations from wearing or testing a watch.
What makes the Rolex 1908 different?
Rolex presents the Perpetual 1908 as a contemporary expression of traditional watchmaking. The name refers to 1908, the year Hans Wilsdorf devised the Rolex name and registered the brand in Switzerland, according to the company. Its styling draws on early Oyster Perpetual watches and reinterprets the look of the Oyster Perpetual of 1931; it is not a direct reproduction of that historical watch. A formal dial with distinct Rolex details
The 39 mm case frames a dial with Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, faceted hour markers, a Breguet-style hour hand, a sword-shaped minute hand and small seconds at 6. The bezel combines a domed upper section with a fluted lower part. These choices give the watch a more traditional visual vocabulary than Rolex’s familiar Oyster sports-watch designs, without making it a copy of a vintage reference. Movement, precision and power reserve
The 1908 uses calibre 7140, a self-winding mechanical movement that Rolex introduced with the collection in 2023. The company says the calibre was entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex and exclusively equips the model. It lists a Syloxi hairspring, Chronergy escapement and Paraflex shock absorbers. What the transparent case back reveals
The sapphire case back exposes the movement rather than concealing it behind a solid cover. Rolex identifies Côtes de Genève decoration and an openwork oscillating weight in yellow gold. That visible movement is a defining part of the 1908’s presentation: it gives the wearer a view of the mechanism and its finishing, an uncommon emphasis in Rolex’s product lineup. Case materials, straps and bracelet vary by configuration
The Perpetual 1908 is offered in configurations that include gold and platinum cases with leather straps, as well as an 18 ct yellow-gold Settimo bracelet. The precise combination of case material, dial and attachment depends on the reference. Consult Rolex’s current model page and Perpetual Collection overview for the configuration under consideration; do not generalize one reference’s details to the entire range.

In style, the 1908 occupies familiar dress-watch territory: restrained proportions, a seconds subdial, traditional hands and a formal mix of polished and fluted surfaces. Its automatic movement, 50-metre water-resistance rating and display back distinguish its specification and presentation from a purely time-only, closed-back dress watch. Whether it feels comfortable under a cuff, reads easily at a glance or has the right presence on your wrist depends on the individual wearer and exact configuration. Those are not qualities that can be established from dimensions and official descriptions alone.
