Robert Redford reportedly was Polanski’s first choice for Guy Woodhouse, but negotiations fell through; John Cassavetes played the role in the released film. The American Film Institute ranked Rosemary’s Baby ninth on its 2001 list of the most thrilling American films—not in a universal or current ranking of every thriller ever made.
Which film did Robert Redford reportedly turn down?
It was Rosemary’s Baby, a horror film about a young New York couple expecting their first child. The story follows Rosemary Woodhouse as she grows confused and frightened by the people and events around her, while her husband Guy, an ambitious actor, appears to benefit professionally. That is the premise in Paramount’s official synopsis; the details of the ending are best left unspoiled.
Men’s Journal reported on October 2, 2026, that director Roman Polanski’s first choice for Guy was Robert Redford, but that negotiations fell through. This is a reported casting anecdote, not a fact independently established by the AFI cast record. The released film stars John Cassavetes as Guy.
What does “ranked ninth” mean?
The ninth-place claim refers specifically to the American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Thrills list, published in 2001. AFI described the project as a ranking of thrilling American films. It is a notable institutional recognition, but it should not be read as an objective measurement or as a present-day ranking of all thrillers worldwide.
