Salman Toor’s Someone Like You, at London’s Courtauld Gallery from 2 October 2026 to 10 January 2027, explores the pull between belonging and estrangement through imagined queer lives. Its nightlife is not a portrait of London: in Bar Boy (2019), a young man’s phone-lit face stands apart from the crowd in a club evoking New York’s East Village.
What is Someone Like You about?
The Courtauld describes the exhibition as Toor’s first solo exhibition in Europe. It brings together 19 paintings, all made since 2019, alongside a separate display of drawings. Across them, friendship and love share space with solitude and alienation; the figures seek connection while negotiating whether they can feel at home.
Toor was born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1983, and lives and works in New York. The Courtauld says the people and scenes in the paintings are fictional, though rooted in the artist’s personal experiences and memories. The gallery characterizes the work as tender and sensual portrayals of cosmopolitan urban life, centering imagined lives of young queer South Asian men in New York. The Courtauld’s exhibition page gives the show’s overview and visitor details.
How does Toor paint the highs and lows of queer nightlife?
Bar Boy turns a crowd into a setting for solitude
The Courtauld describes Bar Boy (2019) as a young man isolated and distracted in a bustling club, his face illuminated by his smartphone. The scene evokes nightlife in New York’s East Village, not London. The contrast between the nearby crowd and the figure’s attention fixed on his phone makes social proximity and emotional distance visible at once.

That tension offers a way into the exhibition’s broader interests without treating one painting as a universal account of queer nightlife. Toor told the Courtauld that he aims to “depict queer and immigrant lives that straddle different cultures and inhabit the tension between intimacy and exposure, belonging and estrangement. What it means to find a community, but also the daily costs associated with visibility.” The phrase “highs and lows” fits that coexistence: the possibility of intimacy and community, alongside the strain of exposure or disconnection. The Courtauld’s exhibition material discusses the show and its themes.
