1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSamsung’s early-July 2024 Galaxy Buds leak was broadly accurate: the company replaced its familiar compact, rounded earbuds with a downward stem and a white, AirPods-like silhouette. The first images chiefly showed the Galaxy Buds3 Pro, but Samsung confirmed the family-wide redesign at Galaxy Unpacked on July 10, 2024. The resemblance was real; calling the finished products simple AirPods copies would miss the important differences in fit, controls, lighting, software and Galaxy-device integration.
What the Galaxy Buds3 leak actually showed
Images published days before Samsung’s July 10, 2024 event showed what appeared to be a Galaxy Buds3 Pro with a downward-facing stem, white housing, a case related to earlier Galaxy Buds cases and light strips along the stem. The photographs immediately invited comparison with Apple’s AirPods Pro. SamMobile’s report and a 9to5Google hands-on leak were appearance evidence, not confirmation of battery life, sound, noise cancellation or final software.
Some pre-launch reports discussed the Buds3 and Buds3 Pro separately. Rumored specifications therefore should not be treated as specifications for the whole range. The reliable conclusion from the images was narrower: Samsung was moving to a stemmed design, and the Pro model appeared to have illuminated elements.
Why the AirPods comparison was unavoidable
- Stem: Each earbud extends downward from the ear, unlike the compact Galaxy Buds2 Pro shape.
- White exterior: The finish reinforced the familiar AirPods category association.
- Hardware on the stem: Microphones and controls occupy the part of the earbud closest to the user’s mouth and fingers.
- Charging case: Its upright wireless-earbud format is recognizable in the same product category as an AirPods case.
- Conventional silhouette: The shape looks closer to standard AirPods or AirPods Pro than to Samsung’s earlier rounded buds.
The comparison is strongest at the level of overall form factor, not an identical copy of one Apple model. The open-fit Buds3 is the closer analogue to standard AirPods; the sealed, tip-equipped Buds3 Pro is the more technically relevant comparison with AirPods Pro.

How closely the final earbuds followed the leak
Samsung launched both models on July 10, 2024, with reported U.S. launch prices of $179.99 for Galaxy Buds3 and $249.99 for Galaxy Buds3 Pro; general availability was reported for July 24. TechCrunch’s launch report documents those dates and prices.
The broad visual direction survived intact. Samsung calls the Pro’s sharper, angular stem a “blade,” and the Pro includes blade lighting. The regular Buds3 uses the same stem concept but is an open-fit earbud rather than a silicone-tip in-ear model. Samsung’s design presentation describes the blade as part of a new approach to wearability, sensing and interaction. Samsung’s design explanation is the company’s rationale, not independent proof that every ear will find the form more comfortable.

What Samsung says the stem is for
Samsung presents the new stem or blade as functional rather than merely cosmetic. Its product-planning material points to microphone placement, easier pinch and swipe controls, wear detection, real-time processing and Galaxy AI experiences. The company also discusses voice commands and interpretation-related functions. Samsung’s product-planning interview and the Samsung Mobile Press version describe those goals as Samsung’s design intent. A stem can place microphones nearer the mouth and make controls easier to find, but it does not guarantee better calls or comfort in every ear.

AirPods similarities versus Samsung differences
Controls
The Buds3 series uses stem-based pinch and swipe interactions. That echoes the control trend established by AirPods Pro, while retaining Samsung’s own gestures and settings.
Blade lighting
The Buds3 Pro’s illuminated blade is a conspicuous visual difference from standard AirPods models. It can communicate status and gives the Pro a more angular, futuristic appearance.

- OPTIMIZED COMFORT: Enjoy that just-right fit, with an improved, ear-hugging design and changeable ear tips.
Fit and noise control
The regular Buds3’s open fit avoids silicone tips and can suit listeners who dislike a sealed canal or want more awareness of surroundings. The trade-off is less passive isolation, more potential sound leakage and weaker suitability for aircraft, public transit or noisy offices. Reviews from Wired and Engadget identify those practical limitations. The Buds3 Pro’s ear tips create a seal and make it the appropriate Samsung comparison for sealed AirPods Pro-style use.
Galaxy ecosystem and AI
Galaxy AI, voice controls and interpretation features depend on compatible Samsung Galaxy hardware, software, accounts and regional support. With an iPhone, the earbuds can still function as Bluetooth audio accessories, but Samsung-specific controls, updates and integrations are more limited. Samsung’s compatibility comparison is at Samsung’s Galaxy Buds comparison page.

Is the redesign an improvement?
There is no universal answer. Users who prefer an open fit, easier-to-locate controls or a stem familiar from AirPods may find the Buds3 more approachable. Listeners who need isolation, stable bass or stronger noise control should look at the sealed Buds3 Pro or another sealed Galaxy Buds model. Ear shape matters: a stem does not guarantee stability, and owners who liked the compact Buds2 Pro may prefer that older form.
What the leak did—and did not—prove
- Established by photographs: a stemmed white design, a related charging case and apparent Pro blade lighting.
- Confirmed at launch: Samsung’s family-wide stem design, the open-fit Buds3, the sealed Buds3 Pro and the Pro’s blade treatment.
- Not established by the leak: sound quality, battery endurance, ANC performance, call quality, software availability or retail price.
Calling the earbuds “AirPods-inspired” is a fair visual description. “Samsung copied Apple” is an interpretation, not an established fact: stems are a broader earbud design pattern, and Samsung added its own blade geometry, lighting, controls and Galaxy software.
Which one makes sense for you?
Choose Galaxy Buds3 if
- You want an open-fit, AirPods-like wearing experience.
- You dislike silicone ear tips or need awareness of nearby sounds.
- You use a Galaxy phone and do not require maximum isolation.
Choose Galaxy Buds3 Pro if
- You want a sealed in-ear fit and stronger passive isolation.
- You value the two-way speaker design and Pro-only adaptive features.
- You like the blade-lighting design and accept a deeper fit and higher launch price.
Consider AirPods if
- Your primary devices are an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- You prioritize Apple’s device switching, Find My behavior and ecosystem integration.
Consider older or newer alternatives if
- You prefer Samsung’s compact, non-stemmed shape; a discounted Galaxy Buds2 Pro may suit you.
- You are shopping in 2026 and a newer Samsung generation is similarly priced; check Samsung’s current listings before choosing an older model.
The Bottom Line
The leak got the central story right: Samsung moved Galaxy Buds toward an AirPods-like stem. The finished Buds3 and Buds3 Pro were not identical Apple replicas, however. Their fit, blade lighting, controls and Galaxy-specific software make the choice less about a silhouette and more about whether you want open-fit comfort or sealed isolation—and which phone ecosystem you use.
