What is the Galaxy Fit2?
Samsung launched the Galaxy Fit2 (model SM-R220) in September 2020 at an original U.S. price of $59. It is a basic fitness band, not a smartwatch. Do not confuse it with the older Gear Fit2 or Gear Fit2 Pro, which used a different platform and offered a different feature set, including capabilities that the Fit2 does not have. The earlier Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit e are also separate products. The Galaxy Fit3 is a newer successor in some markets.
Samsung’s U.S. product page remains accessible, but it does not establish dependable current stock or pricing. In 2026, treat the Fit2 as discontinued or old stock unless a seller can prove otherwise.

Design and display
The 21g plastic body and TPU strap are the Fit2’s biggest everyday strengths. It is slim enough to sleep in and light enough to forget during normal wear. Samsung lists Black and Scarlet versions.
Its 1.1-inch AMOLED panel has strong contrast, vivid color and good outdoor and nighttime visibility. The 126 × 294 resolution is sufficient for metrics and short alerts, but the narrow aspect ratio means more vertical scrolling when reading notifications. There is no always-on display.
Interaction is touchscreen-only. A capacitive touch area returns you to the main screen, but it is less obvious and less reassuring during exercise than a physical button. Watch faces provide some customization, while the compact shape keeps the interface simple rather than smartwatch-like.
Fitness and health tracking
Steps and daily activity
The Fit2 records steps, estimated distance, calories and inactivity, using its accelerometer and gyroscope. These are useful for everyday movement trends, not a substitute for dedicated sports equipment.

Workout tracking and GPS
Automatic exercise detection and manually started workouts are available. However, there is no built-in GPS, altimeter or dependable phone-tethered GPS according to TechRadar. Outdoor pace, distance and route information therefore rely on motion estimates and are unsuitable for serious running, cycling or elevation-aware training.
Heart rate and stress
Continuous optical heart-rate readings feed exercise and stress-related features. TechRadar found the monitor unreliable enough to be a major drawback. Fit, movement, skin contact, exercise intensity and band placement can all change results. Treat readings as wellness estimates, never as medical data or dependable heart-rate-zone guidance.
Sleep tracking
The band automatically detects sleep and reports duration and sleep-stage-related information, including REM insights described by TechRadar. Its light weight and multiday battery make overnight wear practical. Use the results to observe personal trends, not to diagnose a sleep disorder.
Water use
Samsung lists 5ATM and IP68 protection and markets the band as swim-ready. Water resistance can deteriorate through age, impacts, chemicals, heat or seal damage. A used unit with an unknown history, opened case or cracked body should not be assumed safe for swimming; 5ATM/IP68 is not permission for diving or every water activity.

Smart features
The Fit2 can show incoming call and text notifications, weather, schedules, activity widgets and music controls. Samsung highlights preset quick replies when paired with Android. Consumer Reports also lists a find-phone function and handwashing timer. Watch faces add limited personalization.
This is still a band, not a standalone smartwatch: there is no cellular connection, app ecosystem or comfortable long-message experience, and TechRadar notes that notification images cannot be viewed. Android offers more interaction than iPhone, particularly for message replies. Feature details and permissions may vary with the companion software available for your phone.

Battery life and charging
The 159mAh battery is rated by Samsung for up to 15 days of typical use and up to 21 days in low-usage mode. Samsung cautions that settings, features, apps, usage, charging cycles and operating conditions affect runtime. TechRadar achieved about seven days with notifications enabled, half brightness, a 45-minute workout and regular heart-rate use; heavier exercise and continuous monitoring used roughly 15–20% per day.

For a feature-heavy owner, around a week is a more realistic expectation. A unit released in 2020 may do worse because its battery has aged, even if it was stored unused. The Fit2 uses a dedicated charging accessory, so confirm that the dock is included or obtainable for the exact regional model.

Samsung’s legacy listing specifies Samsung smartphones, non-Samsung Android phones running Android 5.0 or later with at least 1.5GB RAM, and iOS 10 or later on iPhone 7 or newer. It connects over Bluetooth 5.1 and has no Wi-Fi or location hardware.
Those are historical requirements, not a guarantee that every 2026 handset, operating-system release or regional app configuration will work. Before buying, verify that the current Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health software recognizes SM-R220 on your exact phone. TechRadar required two phone apps for full functionality during its review period; names, permissions and setup flows may have changed.
FreeRTOS, 2MB RAM and 32MB storage leave no modern app-store experience. Do not buy it expecting a published long-term firmware roadmap, new features or assured support for future phones.
Who should buy it?
It makes sense when
- You want inexpensive steps, sleep trends and basic notifications.
- You prefer a very light, narrow band and accept charging about weekly.
- You find a steeply discounted listing with a return policy and healthy battery.
- You use a compatible Android phone or accept reduced iPhone functionality.
Choose something newer when
- You need GPS, accurate pace, distance, elevation or route maps.
- You train by heart-rate zones or need dependable exercise readings.
- You want ECG, blood-oxygen, recovery or other advanced health features.
- The Fit2 costs near a current fitness band or entry-level smartwatch.
- You require assured compatibility with a recent phone.
- You are buying for swimming but cannot establish the unit’s water-resistance history.

A current Galaxy Watch, such as the Galaxy Watch8, is a smartwatch-class product rather than a direct Fit2 replacement. Compare price, battery, phone support and fitness features rather than assuming it is the natural successor.
Used and old-stock buying checklist
- Check the actual price. The $59 launch price is historical. Skip any listing priced close to a current tracker.
- Ask about battery runtime. Confirm real use time and test charging; appearance cannot reveal battery aging.
- Confirm the charging dock. A missing proprietary accessory can erase the bargain.
- Pair it before keeping it. Make sure your phone and current Samsung apps recognize SM-R220.
- Inspect the hardware. Test the entire touchscreen, capacitive return area and display for dead zones, burn-in and scratches.
- Inspect the strap and case. Check clasp security, cracks and signs that the device was opened or dropped.
- Do not trust swimming claims blindly. Unknown history means treating water resistance as unproven.
- Use a return policy. Keep the option to return a unit that will not pair, charge or last acceptably, and ensure it has been reset and is not tied to another account.
Final verdict
The Galaxy Fit2 is still pleasant to wear and competent for basic steps, sleep trends, notifications and low-maintenance daily tracking. Its AMOLED screen and potentially week-plus battery remain appealing. In 2026, however, the missing GPS, unreliable heart-rate performance, narrow band interface and uncertain software compatibility matter more than Samsung branding. Buy only a well-checked unit at a substantial discount; otherwise, a newer fitness band is the safer purchase.
