The Seiko Prospex Marinemaster SBDX017, better known as the MM300, was discontinued in 2018. That makes it a discontinued-watch buying decision—not proof that examples are scarce, that prices will rise, or that a new one is still available. If you are considering one, verify the specific watch, its condition and service history, and compare it with the SBDX023 successor before buying.
When was the SBDX017 discontinued?
Fratello reported on July 5, 2018, that Seiko had told the publication earlier that year the Marinemaster 300 SBDX017 would be discontinued, adding that it had by then ended. This is Fratello’s account of what Seiko told it, not a published direct statement from a named Seiko spokesperson. A Japanese authorized retailer, Prive Ishikawa, wrote on November 9, 2018, that SBDX017 production had ended and identified the SBDX023, released that day, as its successor. Fratello’s 2018 report and Prive Ishikawa’s November 2018 post establish the reported chronology.
“Get it while you still can” should be read as a reminder that the reference is no longer in regular production—not as evidence of a dwindling supply or a forecast of future prices. New-old-stock and pre-owned examples may appear on the market, but current stock and prices have not been established here.
What is the SBDX017?
The SBDX017 is a lightly updated version of the earlier SBDX001 MM300. Fratello’s 2018 review describes a 44 mm stainless-steel case, automatic Seiko 8L35 movement with date, Hardlex crystal, DiaShield treatment and revised Lumibrite. The Prospex mark appears on the crown, while the dial retains Marinemaster branding. These details come from a specialist review, rather than a current official SBDX017 specification page. The review example arrived with a steel bracelet and a waffle-style rubber strap. That does not establish what every original package—or any particular second-hand listing—includes. Check the contents of the exact watch being offered.
SBDX017 vs SBDX023: what changed?
Prive Ishikawa identifies the SBDX023 as the SBDX017’s successor. Seiko’s official Japanese specification page lists the SBDX023 with an 8L35 automatic movement, approximately 50 hours of power reserve, a 44.3 mm case, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, DiaShield coating, 300 m saturation-diving water resistance and one-piece case construction. Those published details make it possible to compare certain specifications, but succession does not mean the two watches are identical.

Should you buy an SBDX017 now?
It can make sense if you specifically want this discontinued MM300 reference and find an example whose condition, documentation and price suit you. The SBDX023 is the documented successor, not an automatic substitute for someone who wants the SBDX017’s particular design and details. Decide which characteristics matter to you, then assess the individual watch rather than assuming every listing is complete or equivalent.

- Confirm the reference: Check that the watch, case markings and paperwork correspond to SBDX017. Ask for clear photographs and an explanation of any missing documents.
- Assess condition: Examine the case and bracelet for wear, damage and polishing; request sharp photographs of the dial, bezel, case sides and clasp. Ask whether any parts have been replaced.
- Check what is included: Establish whether the sale includes the bracelet, any strap, box, papers and spare links. Do not assume the review example’s bracelet and rubber strap are included.
- Ask for service history: Request dated records and details of work performed. For a costly pre-owned mechanical watch, consider an inspection by a qualified watch professional; no model-specific service interval is established here.

Are there current Marinemaster alternatives?

Rather than treating every current Marinemaster as a direct SBDX017 replacement, compare the exact reference’s case dimensions, crystal and bezel materials, movement, water-resistance description, dial and crown branding, weight and fit. For a pre-owned SBDX017, also weigh condition, included accessories, service records and seller terms against the local price of the alternative.
