The Seiko Prospex SPB151 and SPB153 share the same modern 1970 Heritage Diver’s Watch design, but arrive with distinct looks and bands: the SPB151 pairs a black dial with a stainless-steel bracelet, while the SPB153 uses an olive-green dial and bezel with a silicone strap. Both draw on the Seiko 6105, often called the “Captain Willard” by collectors—a nickname, not an official Seiko model name.

The launch prices are historical, not current quotes. Seiko’s UK product page for the SPB153 displayed GBP 1,050 when consulted in 2026; it does not establish the SPB151’s current price or prices in other markets. Check a local retailer for current availability and pricing.
Fratello describes a slight sunburst effect on the SPB153 dial and notes that its bezel color can look different under changing light. Those are observations from that reviewer, not a specification that applies to every viewing condition.
What the official SPB153 specifications say
Seiko’s UK SPB153 page lists these dimensions and features. The official figures below are for the SPB153; they should not automatically be treated as a separate official specification sheet for the SPB151.

Monochrome’s 2020 launch coverage gives the case diameter as 42.8 mm, while Seiko’s current UK SPB153 page lists 42.7 mm. These are source-specific figures; the difference is small, but it is better to retain the attribution than imply the sources give an identical measurement.
How the supplied bands compare in wear
The bracelet is the most obvious practical distinction beyond color. Monochrome reports that the SPB151 bracelet includes a diving extension. In Fratello’s hands-on review, the reviewer found both bands comfortable and personally preferred the silicone strap. The same reviewer found the bracelet’s dive extension difficult to open and said its extra links kept it from lying flat. These are one reviewer’s impressions, not universal findings about fit or operation.

For someone considering a replacement strap, Seiko lists a 20 mm lug distance for the SPB153. Confirm the exact model, spring-bar fit and buckle requirements before buying a third-party band; the stated lug distance alone does not confirm compatibility with every strap or clasp.
Why these watches are called “Captain Willard”
The SPB151 and SPB153 are modern interpretations of the Seiko 6105, a design associated with Martin Sheen’s character in Apocalypse Now. Watch collectors and reviewers commonly use “Captain Willard” for the 6105 and its descendants, but it is not Seiko’s official name for these Prospex references.

The sources differ on the original 6105’s production chronology: Fratello dates it to 1970 and says it was produced for about seven years, while Monochrome describes production beginning in 1968 and ending in 1977. Monochrome also gives the vintage 6105 a 150 m rating and notes its 4 o’clock crown position and crown guard. Those are historical details about the older watch, not the SPB151 or SPB153’s specifications; Seiko lists 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance for the modern SPB153.

- Choose the SPB153 if you want the olive-green colorway and silicone strap, or prefer the appearance the reviewer favored.
The core design and movement context are shared, so the choice is mainly about color and the supplied band, with fit and current local price worth checking before purchase. The cited launch prices do not tell you what either reference costs today outside the UK SPB153 listing.
